I will apologize for the lengthy post right off the bat LOL
If you have an Apple Iphone feel free to jump to the "bottom line" of this post.
Here's an update.
I got the Saramonic USB-C cable, and it works... sorta.
I tried the cable on 2 different Android smartphones. at first, none of the phones seem to detect it. Then, I had the brilliant idea to look at the side of the box the cable came in, and saw that Saramonic recommends using this cable with apps that have an audio input selection option like Cinema FV5. I had the app already so I just ran it, selected the input and it worked. If you are just using your smartphone to record video it definitely serves the purpose, but don't expect it to work with Facebook live or Youtube live with the built in camera. There might be other apps that will allow you to do so, but do note that those apps will have to give you an option to select the audio input.
If you are expecting the Saramonic cable to work right off the bat with the built in camera, chances are it will not. From my experience so far, if your phone has a headphone jack, your best option will be the Edutige cable, as it will work with Android operating system by default because the system will think is a microphone headset input.
If anyone knows how to "fix" or "trick" android into accepting the cable automatically, or be selectable for use with the built in camera app, I am open to suggestions.
Second, I got the OTG cable and the Sabrent USB audio and it also worked... Sorta.
I had an LG phone (tribute, cheaper LG) that was doing a weird phase when I plugged in the Edutige cable. I was getting a signal, but the audio had this small amount of phasing that was perceptible. I grabbed the OTG USB (micro USB in this case) and plugged in the Sabrent audio dongle. for some reason, it automatically tricked the phone into thinking it was a headset and it displayed the headset Icon right on the status bar! I then went ahead and fired up the built in camera and... perfect audio, and with just a regular TRS cable going into the Sabrent's mic input. Not only am I getting perfect audio, but I also get to plug in headphones and do a couple of test runs to check my levels and make sure everything is working properly. I tried it on 2 more phones, and it didn't work (even with e Cinema FV5 software).
In my case, I decided to get a "new" phone, so I picked up a used unlocked LG V40 (which it's a very content creator friendly phone with tons of options) and the Edutige cable performed flawlessly. The SC7 cable made by Rode also worked great! (and its the cheapest option for 11 bucks or so...) Then again, this particular LG has an option to select an input in the built in camera software, and is a phone with very advanced audio features like limiter, HIFI audio, software selectable gain and even frequency roll-off.
Bottom line:
Apple's Iphones will have the advantage always due to the fact that there is only one company that makes them, therefore, anything that is apple related (MFI certified) will have better chances of working with the hardware simply because there is ONLY one OS and its made by the same company that makes the phone. In fact, BBC uses Iphones for mobile reporting and mobile news gathering (for those moments you cant carry a big bulky "look at me!!" camera) being the Iphone 6s plus the minimum requirement, which happens to be the last Iphone to come with an audio jack input.
With Androids? not so much. Every company has different variants of the OS, and some will have features others don't even within the same brand. My best suggestion? take any of these cable input options with you to the cell phone store, explain to the salesperson what you are trying to do and test out a few that meet your camera usage needs. this will definitely save you the disappointment of finding out after you have already committed to a purchase.

Which wireless receiver were you testing with?
So will the Edutige cable work with the Sennheiser EW 100? I have that and a Samsung Galaxy s10e as well as a Samsung Tab s5e tablet, so the more use I can get out of my Sennheiser without having to buy yet another microphone, the better!
@@photojoseph Thank YOU for pointing me down the right direction (and into the rabbit hole LOL).
That is really awesome, thank you for so much great information. I’m going to pin your comment for others to see. I had no idea the Androids could be such a pain!
My audio sounds really hot - is there a way to adjust the gain on the iPhone?
Not with the native app. Some apps have it but you should adjust at the mic.
Seems to me the Rode SC7 is quite similar to the Edutige cable for a quarter of the price. I have one and it works, but not directly of the Sennheiser ew100. It does work with a standard line out, though.
Glad it works. This video is five years old, so…
Hi Is there a link to a 2022 edition to this subject?
@@photojoseph Eventually I plugged a simple lightning split cable to the iphone on one side and to the Sennhizer transmuter + headphones on the other side. Using filmic pro app I can control the recording level and it all works perfectly well.
I haven’t updated it in years. There’s so many high quality built-for-iPhone mics now that it’s kind of pointless I think. Back in the day it was the only option. All these options still work though.
Its a pain in the arse lol. I got a type C receiver for a wireless lapel microphone, and its supposed to just work, the receiver should show an icon when I plug it in, but it doesnt. I am not sure if its just a samsung android S9 issue or what. The mic doesnt work anyway. It's for facebook streaming. I am also trying to remove the options on my desktop that is all connected to the webcam and microphone there, so that I can stream from my cell phone. Big headache!
audio is rarely easy. Sorry I can't help with any android issues; I don't use it.
Does the Edutige screw properly onto the Sennheiser reciever? The black screw on the Edutige looks much different than the usual silver screw on the Sennheiser cables.
Hey Jospeh, I tried to order the EWL ( I have an iphone 13 pro and a sennheiser lav mic) but they don't ship to Canada. Do you have any other suggestions of what I can use that will work? Thanks in advance for any help you throw my way.
Saramonic SR-C2002 3.5mm TRRS Female to Lightning Adapter Cable for Audio
is what they said was needed - for any Canadians out there in the same bind.

@@photojoseph Awesome. I called them and they were super helpful. Thanks so much for your helpful response dude, I really appreciate you taking the time!
Nothing new since this video. What about B&H; they ship anywhere
Question: Will the Apple Lightning to usb3 camera adapter + usb audio adapter work for the issue with the seinsheiser?
I am trying to avoid the saramonic unless their are many pro’s. Thanks.
I am trying to avoid the saramonic unless their are many pro’s. Thanks.
It should work. USB-C; so you’re going to iPad instead of iPhone? I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
Hi Joseph!
I wanted to thank you for making this super helpful video, which I watched multiple times while trying to figure out how to connect my Sennheiser G4 wireless receiver pack to my iPhone 13 Pro. While I didn’t end up going with any of your 3 suggestions - I found out about Movo’s MC3 TRS-TRRS adapter (equivalent of Rode’s SC4), which worked perfectly plugged into the Apple lightning to headphone adapter - it was your explanation of details like how Sennheiser’s cable is proprietary and “true line level in” etc that helped a newbie like me understand the science behind what I needed! It’s been so frustrating because very few videos on YouTube deal with this issue, and no one at the Apple store knows anything either. Several other YouTube clips unplugged the Sennheiser cable and replaced it with a TRS-TRRS patch cable (the curly red wire one like the Rode SC7), which did not work for me at all.
Not sure if it’s because this video is a few years old, but I think the combo I used (Movo’s MC3/Rode SC4 + Apple lightning to headphone adapter) is a simpler and much cheaper workaround now than these three? It cost me under $20 total.
Anyway, thanks!

not all in one solution when you want to charge your fone at ythe same time
The USB audio interface to the lightning adapter to my iPhone 8 Plus worked for my ATR3350 lapel mic. FiLMiC Pro let me select the microphone. The audio quality itself was pretty good, but there was a lot of noise (likely the mic).
Hey there, I have the Sennheiser ew 100 G4 kit and want to use the SKP 100 G4 Plug On Transmitter with the Senal Mic ENG-18R/RL to do a "live report" style video using an iphone SE that has the G4 Rx plugged into it. So we plan to be live and would like the L/R audio coming into the iphone. Are there new cables you would recommend with it being 2022? Thank you!
is there an updated version of this for sennheiser?
this is for Sennheiser… if you mean for the more modern AVX, it's the same setup.
This is so helpful! Do you have an updated version for 2022?
@@wendyhoward410 RØDE wireless go is very popular and I believe includes iPhone cables. Also one from pixel is interesting called LarkX
@@photojoseph that makes sense. Thank you for the quick reply! Are there any specific purpose-built wireless mics you would recommend for the iPhone?
I don't. I haven't been to a trade show like this since NAB 2019! I am actually going this year (2023) but I don't have time to do it again .However, there are dozens of purpose-built wireless mics now for phones, so I don't feel like an updated video is necessary.
Hi I'm trying to connect my iPhone7 to a Fulaim receiver. I've connected it through the receiver to a CN-20 Mobile Phone Adapter, which is then connected to a TRS-TRRS Adapter, which is then connected to a lightning cable adapter. I plug the cable into my iPhone but it's not picking it up as a microphone, but instead, it thinks it's a "Dock speaker". How do I change it so my iPhone can pick up the audio FROM the wire instead of trying to use it as a speaker? Thank you!
Joseph! Awesome video. The Lightning to USB 3.0 Camera Adapter and
USB Audio Interface worked perfectly with my Sennheiser wireless system. I just had an exclusive interview with VP Kamala Harris in Selma and my main camera - Canon XF405 - was live streaming the program. They surprised me with a one-on-one and the only solution was my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Audio was BAD. There was a loud generator nearby and I was screwed. But this definitely solves my future issues!

Hey man, GREAT video! I'm a little bit unclear about one thing, even though I have seen your video a couple of times now.
I have the new iPhone 13 pro max - and an old Sony UWP-V1 setup. But I can't make sound come through ... do they match, and if so, what cable should I use?
Thanks for the GREAT videos!!! :-)

in your experience do some trs to trrs cables simply not work for this configuration. you have to get special ones like in this video?
Hm, when I did this video there were very few options. TRS to TRRS isn’t common but any should work, I’d think?
This is a great video
Great video...bought most of the stuff and still can't get a Sennheiser G4 to work with an iPhone 11 pro. I've looked for the annual update...has there been one?
I haven’t updated since COVID as I haven’t been able to tour a show floor looking for new solutions. This old solution should still work though. Details on what is and isn’t happening?
I have still a 2006 Sennheiser EW100 working very well - using with my iPhone, so I just loved this helpful video, now...
A WILD QUESTION: 🙈 do you know of any headset that I can use with that EW100 - I do not like the ME3 - I want thin and sleek 🤩 any suggestions from you please Joseph?

@@photojoseph Seems it is just what I am looking for 🙏. I trust you gave me an affiliate link. I will try to see what price I can get for it on Black Friday 😇Cheers
Definitely — look up Countryman. https://geni.us/ufo1HCe The E6 and H6 (same mic; different attachment) is the industry standard. Light, discreet, sounds amazing. Not cheap, but worth every penny.
@@photojoseph yes. I’ve endes ut using the Røde Wireless Go II with the SC15 cable to an iPhone. It works ok over short distances with very few interference issues. The fact that I had to get a special crossover cable is rather annoying though. Now it seems like a bunch of brands are making their own systems like you said so it would be really hard to make some kind of comparison. You would probably have to draw some lines between consumer, prosumer and actual professional gear. I don’t know if that even makes sense for a the phone video production segment. Also I would bring the popcorn to watch the comment section about what gear goes in what category 😅
how did I miss this? Sorry! No update… I do the research at trade shows and those haven't happened in a while. I may have to revisit but at this point I think there's so many options. When I did this, especially the first one, you really had to hack it together.
The "Cabling" section at the bottom doesn't ever seem to indicate that you're recording with most of the cables you're discussing...?
I own the LC-C35. It was the first stereo mic Lightning adapter I bought.
After I got it, I tested it and immediately exchanged it, because the noise floor was so high that I assumed the cable had to be faulty.
When I got the replacement, it had the exact same issue.
So either I'm extremely unlucky or the LC-C35 has an incredibly high level of self-noise.

I went with the first and cheapest option. I have an iphone xs max and a comica ccm ws50.. I still can’t get it to work. I picked up my daughter’s iphone 6 which has the auxiliary port, removed the adaptor and plugged it in directly and it works like a charm. Can anyone else get a mic to work with an xs max?
So i just bought option 1 today beacuse of your recommendation. then I see this cideo. I will cancel the order and order option 3, seems much better, because only a cable instead of 2 devices like iption 1 thanks.
Thank you for this super educational video. I went and bought the Saramonic cable! I was wondering if you knew of a way to plug 2 saramonic cables into the iPhone. We have 2 sennheiser units and I would love to record 2 people into the iPhone at once. Trying to find an adaptor that allows 2 lightning cables from the saramonic cables to plug into it? Thanks again
Hi Phil, we're exactly in the same situation! Have you tried something like a dual lightning adapter? In the apple website I found this Belkin "Lightning Audio + Charge Rockstar"
Hi! Thanks doe much for this video. Have this sennheiser and I could not figure out how to use it with my phone. I filmed a few videos, however my mic is very loud. Sounds hot at times making my voice distracting. Any tips on settings? This never happens when its connected to my mixer for zoom or gopro. Thanks!!!!
HI Monica. And your output levels are good? Here's a video on how to do that which I've gone back to several times: https://youtu.be/jjf7yxDll0w — it sounds though like there's some auto leveling happening. You didn't say what app you're using to record in the phone?
What are you TALKING about? I’m either sitting or walking around a show floor in this video.
Thank you. This was helpful. I was struggling with different adapters and sometimes they would work...sometimes they wouldn't. I'm going to try the usb solution since its a little more bulky but I can keep the charging ability that way.
Thank you so much for this video!! Live saver for connecting my Sennheiser G4 to my apple iPhone 12 Pro. I used the Lightening to USB 3.0 Camera Adapter combined with the USB Audio Interface and it worked like a charm! Using the links underneath this video to order the parts. Thanks Photo Joseph! Can't wait to start shooting videos with quality audio from my iPhone
@Efrain Gonzalez
Thanks for the effort but after watching the video in its entirety thrice, I still dont have a clear idea of what works with a sennheiser EW 100 g3 & MY GOOGLE PIXEL 4A ANDROID 11.

@@photojoseph Thanks Joseph, I'll try to figure something out for the $400 I spend already instead of buying more equipment.
I can't definitively say if this combo works with any and every specific model of phone on the planet. I think it's quite clear what hardware to get for Android; get it and see if it works. If not… return it.
PhotoJoseph, I purchased the Saramonic cable for use with the inexpensive Comica transmitter/receiver and an iPhone 12. It works very well when doing Facebook Live. HOWEVER, when doing FB, I have to completely close the FB app on the iPhone and then re-open the app just prior to going Live in order for this system to work. Then, it will work on the first connection to FB, but on subsequent attempts to record on FB (leaving the FB app open) it does not work; FB (and/or Apple) picks up the sound from the iPhone's internal mics. I think it is somehow a FB/Apple issue. Prior to doing FB Live, I also close out all open apps on the iPhone. ALSO, the Saramonic cable needs to be plugged in to the iPhone AFTER the FB Live has started to record. I hope some day all these workarounds will be a thing of the past, and we can have true plug and play. THANK YOU, for all your adivce!!
@@photojoseph But at least it works. Actually, very easy to set up and go live on FB, I just wanted to be as clear as possible to whoever may need to follow along after having the same issues.
The Saramonic LC-C35 does not work on the iPhone 12.
Using UxMic9 and the LC-C35 no joy on the 12 however works perfectly on the iPhone XS and XR
Not sure what the issue is.
The 12 is on iOS 14.2.1
The XS is on iOS 13.6.1
The XR is on iOS 14.3

I have the "Rode SC7 3.5mm TRS to TRRS Patch Cable" to the "Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter" which in theory thought could work but it doesn't. I tried from the line output on my interface as well as the headphone output don't know if that would be of any help. Just curious before I spend money on any of the things you went over in this video if you would have any suggestions for me?

What app are you using on the phone to stream? Your hardware sounds like it should work. Test in the iOS camera app to see if audio is showing up there before doing anything else.
Not working on Iphone 12 pro max for facebook live, any advice? Please.

Do you think I can get one of those for my video on Friday
Is there a setting in the phone you would have to adjust? Using iPhone 8 Plus. Using Sennheiser wireless. And Saramonic TRRS to lightning.

I bought my Sennheiser 3 years ago to film my workout videos. While it's amazing quality, it has been SO hard to figure out how to pair it with my iPhone. I regretted getting it until I found this!!!! It is totally worth the $$, but not many people know how to make it work like you!!! LIFESAVER. Now I can do IG live workouts in my echo-ing dance studio and people can hear crystal clear!!! THANK YOU
Hi There! :-) Does this setup work for placing calls or Facetime on iPhones?
Joseph, you were way too fast and were jumping around a lot of different lavs and adapters. I have an iPhone 8+ and the cheaper Comica wireless transmitter and receiver. What adapter(s) do I need to get audio from the Comica lav mic to a video recording in the iPhone Photo App? Thank you!
Please go back and re-watch it. Your questions are answered in this video. You can pause, rewind, and even play back more slowly if you need.
Your delivery is very clear thank you
Hi Joseph, I'm hoping to send audio from an Azden 310UDR receiver to my Galaxy S9+, and then to a bluetooth speaker. I'm planning to get the Saramonic UTC-C35 to plug into my phone. Do you know how I can get it pumping to the bluetooth speakers? Thanks so much for an informative video!
So you want the microphone audio to come out the bluetooth speaker? I don’t think that’s possible. The phone can receive audio, or play audio, but as far as I know, it can’t rebroadcast the incoming audio. Maybe there’s an app for that, but I don’t know, sorry.
I use a iPhone dongle and it is still not working I’m getting so mad
Great video and lineup solutions! I wonder if would work with the minijack/lightning dongle + the Rode SC4 TRS to TRRS adapter
