Atomos Ninja Inferno & GH5 - Best External Recorder for the GH5
Photo Moment - July 12, 2017
Ever seen the Atomos Ninja Inferno on a GH5? It is a powerful prores external recorder on its own, but when you combine it with the LUMIX GH5, there's even more.

watching and re-watching your videos, and much of the GH5 material is now germane to the newly upgraded G9! Many thanks for them, and for making my learning curve that much less steep!
Could you please advise me if there's any way to completely switch off the in-camera audio? I want to record video in 422 10bit 24p HLG into an Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder AND a Tascam DR 100 Mk III sound recorder feeding into the Atomos .
I wish to only use the superior sound from the Tascam, going into the Atomos without the G9 'imposing' its sound into the video recording. Can this be done, or is it an audio issue on the Atomos's audio channels? I have consulted the G9's Advanced User Manual AND trawled the internet for info on this, but to no avail!
Many thanks and all the best.
I've been formatting the angelbird from the Atomos but nothing seems to work.
I don't have the HDMI recording control set on the camera and am hitting record on the Ninja directly. If I set up HDMI recording control and trigger from the camera will the Atomos capture the variable frame rate, or is there another trick.
I appreciate all your help
1) With Log to Rec709 turned on it was impossible to use ETTR method because monitor convert the signal and hardly clip highlights. More than it, it forces to use ETTL, which is harmful to digital cameras. Since Alexa came to the market, and maybe far earlier when Sony F-900 had their hyphergammas, no one follow by outdated Rec709 standard which expect 6 stops and hard clipping in bright areas. Every self-respecting manufacturer had to accommodate to the rec709 standard at least 10 stops or more using S-curves. In this mode Atomos does not do it, so it become useless for real work.
2) But Atomos did some better conversion algorithm from log to rec709 in Atom-HDR mode. But the funny thing is that this mode has nothing to do with HDR monitor technologies. It is just the same log to rec709 conversion with two additional setups: exposure correction and soft clipping (by the way without gamut limiter in highlights). Without doubt this mode has right to exist, especially if Atomos improve this algorithm and make it more film-like as it done in RED cameras or Davinci ACES or pretty much all raw or Log converter engines. But today this mode is not good enough. And damn, that mode should be named Log to Rec709 and replace the first one haha >_<
So I only had to use my own conversion LUTs with exposure corrections unfortunately.
3) HDR monitoring mean that scene-reffered signal will be translated thru the monitor with high degree of compliance to scene brightness. Does your Atom HDR mode do this? Nope.
Log to HDR conversion should spread out input scene-reffered signal to the particular screen of the device taking in to consideration the brightness characteristics of it. Which in an ideal situation corresponds to some HDR EOTF standard. That's it.
Sorry for my probably bad english, I hope you will understand all this stuff.
the possible sync issue while recording. Which can be adjusted in the inferno/Audio options menu. Select the + or - icon to delay the audio by the appropriate number of frames.

Thanks again

Thank you

I.e. does the GH5 put out a "better than HEVC 400Mbit" signal out of it's HDMI connector?
EDIT: Apparently it works, I just found a german Test about that setup: https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Praxistest/10-Bit-60p--V-Log-L--mit-der-Panasonic-GH5-und-dem-Atomos-Inferno----Speedbooster-.html
