Atomos Ninja Inferno & GH5 - Best External Recorder for the GH5

Photo Moment - July 12, 2017

Ever seen the Atomos Ninja Inferno on a GH5? It is a powerful prores external recorder on its own, but when you combine it with the LUMIX GH5, there's even more.

is this device good for Panasonic G9 with new firmware?
Absolutely
It seems the Atomos Ninja Inferno does not play back footage in slow motion, the way the GH5 will when recording 60p, or variable frame rates at 100fps, etc (I have to use PAL system frequency here in UK, so limited Codec & frame rate options). When I slow my footage down in FCPX in post footage does not look smooth, but choppy. Any solution to get smooth slow motion footage with GH5 & Atomos Ninja Inferno combination?
hello, 3 years old video but i'm wondering is the framerate of the GH5 has to match the ninja frame rate ? the GH5 hdmi out is set to 60p but if i just want record 24p on ninja do i have to switch to 24 on the gh5 too ? or the ninja just monitoring an "up to" 60p signal from the GH5 hdmi output and i can record whatever framerate on the Ninja ?
@@photojoseph ok thx again. so finally i can set the GH5 at the lowest settings, exemple 4k 420 8 bits 60p --> the HDMI will ANYWAY output 4k 422 10bit 60p. thx, have a nice shoot :)
@@MySouLisBlue hdmi output is always 422
@@photojoseph i'm sorry may add one last question,i choose from the gh5 the framerate, ok got it; i can choose 8bit cause the hdmi output will send 10bit anyway, what about the 442, is the GH5 format has to be 442 as well or for exemple 4k 420 8bits 24p GH5 will output anyway a 4k 422 10bits 24p to hdmi ?
@@photojoseph oh ok thx for really quick answers, it's actually on the GH5 that i have to choose framerate. reaaly thank you, apreciated.
The Njnja records whatever you send it.
Hey, what do you think about the HDR function with the GH5. Is it worth it?
can u hook up an external recorder like the Ninja to an atem mini pro to record or can it only be used for multi-view purposes?
@@photojoseph thx, would the ninja v allow for a higher res recording vs a standard external ssd (i.e Samsung T7)?
You can do either, but not both at the same time (the ATEM only has one HDMI output, which can be used for multiview or Program)
Troppo bravi se volete girare dei video sono a dispozione
After tests, lots of them I can tell you all this. The signal of video image is recorder trough the CAMERA's SENSOR! That's a fact...no other thing/recorder cand give you more AFTER the footage has been recorded! Ohh....and Feelworld/Andycine/Swit/SmallHD has more color accurate displays than Atomos...again...FACT!
When u hit the mic - your lapel caught the sound - don't think the mic heard it and sent a signal
Hi... great videos... my question is, do you need vlog to record 10bit 60p externally on the atomos?...(looking at the ninja v)
nope. V-Log gives you more flexibility in post, but is also more work.
Hi Joseph, Is it possible with Ninja Inferno to record 120 fps in 1080p in 10 bit 4:2:2 200Mbps ALL-I and without the loss in quality ?
I don’t know all the specs offhand for each recorder… please visit the Atomos website.
Thank you for this video! (:
You're welcome!
Hi PJ. As the owner of a new, and newly upgraded, G9 I've been
watching and re-watching your videos, and much of the GH5 material is now germane to the newly upgraded G9! Many thanks for them, and for making my learning curve that much less steep!
Could you please advise me if there's any way to completely switch off the in-camera audio? I want to record video in 422 10bit 24p HLG into an Atomos Ninja Flame external recorder AND a Tascam DR 100 Mk III sound recorder feeding into the Atomos .
I wish to only use the superior sound from the Tascam, going into the Atomos without the G9 'imposing' its sound into the video recording. Can this be done, or is it an audio issue on the Atomos's audio channels? I have consulted the G9's Advanced User Manual AND trawled the internet for info on this, but to no avail!
Many thanks and all the best.
Do let me know if that isn’t the solution. Good luck!
@@photojoseph Thank you so much for the uber-speedy response, much appreciated. I get the mechanics of it so, again, thanks for that as well. All the best.
Thanks for the complement and congratulations on the G9! No, the audio can’t be shut off, but you shouldn’t have to. The Atomos should be recording the audio to different channels. In your NLE (Final Cut, Premiere, whatever) you would disable or delete the audio tracks from the G9 and only use the one from the TASCAM.
Joseph, indeed you have set the professional standard for these public learning Youtube videos compared to so many others who attempt to entertain rather then teach professionally. As an old-er timer transferring finally to all this dslr gear your teaching and your approach is very appreciated, no nonsense, no stupidity, direct teaching, great! What I appreciate so much is your technical set up to deliver your content live. We are in the process of setting up a channel just like yours for a Veterans program to help our nations Veterans, would love to tap your brain on "How To" set it all up like you have. Reach out please, take13media@aol.com Great Program, thank you, Carlo
Brilliant thanks mate, covered everything I need. Can’t believe I managed to watch an hour+ video on YouTube, that’s a first for me!
Haha welcome, and glad you learned what you needed!
Will Atomos record 4:2:2 proRes if the camera (a6500) records 4:2: 0?
The recorder will record in 422, but if the camera outputs 420 then you don’t magically get 422 quality. The camera needs to output 422. I don’t know what the a6500 outputs; you’ll have to look that up.
Hi can you do punch in while recording via atomos for focus check? Tia
Thanks got it! I am able to do in the Atomos a punch in/zoom while recording in the gh5. I used to be a Sony shooter and really missed this feature. I hope panny puts this as a feature in their upcoming cameras. It was money well spent (got the Atomos Shinobi). Ty for the reply anyways!
Not while recording because the punch would be recorded, too! Do you want to do it on the Atomos itself. It has a focus punch in feature.
Hm, I don’t have one to test myself but have you verified the firmware in the Ninja is the most current?
I just received my ninja inferno and 500G angelbird two days ago for use with GH5, It records and I can see the files in my laptop but I can't preview files from the Atomos, it reads BUSY, NO MEDIA. Firmware version in the ninja inferno its 8.5 and in GH5 firmware 2.5.
I've been formatting the angelbird from the Atomos but nothing seems to work.
When I connect the NI to my GH5 and power it up he screen has all these flickering red pixels. I tried two different HDMI cables and I still get them. What do you think is causing them?
Reaching back in the memory banks here… I think that means you’re trying to output 4k60 but the Ninja only can handle 4K60. I think. I could be totally wrong.
I am watching this almost two years after publication but it is FANTASTIC! Consider your channel subscribed to.
same here! thanks a lot, cheers from France :D
Awesome thank you! And the videos have been getting progressively better :-)
Any idea why my Ninja is saying no input after I set it to 4K 60 p as well as setting it to 4:2:2. I can't get the format to work on the inferno :( please help!
awesome!
@@photojoseph it was the cable, you were spot on! thanks!
It didn’t come with an Atomos Cable? Odd. Theirs are rated for 4K60 so that is probably what the issue was
@@photojoseph No I wasn't, I just used whichever one was sent with the initial product via Amazon. I purchased the Atomos cord last night!
Are you using the Atomos HDMI Cable?
Love your channel!! I'm a noob and have learned a ton from you. I have a question I'm hoping you can answer. I just got a Ninja Inferno and am using it with a GH5s and trying to shoot 120 per sec for slo mo. I wasn't having luck having the footage record in the Atomos in slo mo. (should mention I have the variable frame rate and everything set correctly). The same settings will record on a memory card ok but not on the Atomos.

I don't have the HDMI recording control set on the camera and am hitting record on the Ninja directly. If I set up HDMI recording control and trigger from the camera will the Atomos capture the variable frame rate, or is there another trick.

I appreciate all your help
I'm 99% sure that the HDMI out maximum is 4k60p. I don't think it's possible to record VFR externally.
Is there a way to select & delete individual recorded clips in the ninja inferno's playlist?
That does make sense. Thanks for updating!
Thanks! I did some further research and, for whatever it's worth, the word seems to be that to prevent fragmenting and slowing down ssd access, that function was not provided. Hmm also 😉!
You can browse the clips in a list view but I don't think you can delete them. Hmm
I had my Shogun Inferno some time ago and these two modes: "Log to Rec709" and "Atom HDR" was the most useless modes on the device.

1) With Log to Rec709 turned on it was impossible to use ETTR method because monitor convert the signal and hardly clip highlights. More than it, it forces to use ETTL, which is harmful to digital cameras. Since Alexa came to the market, and maybe far earlier when Sony F-900 had their hyphergammas, no one follow by outdated Rec709 standard which expect 6 stops and hard clipping in bright areas. Every self-respecting manufacturer had to accommodate to the rec709 standard at least 10 stops or more using S-curves. In this mode Atomos does not do it, so it become useless for real work.

2) But Atomos did some better conversion algorithm from log to rec709 in Atom-HDR mode. But the funny thing is that this mode has nothing to do with HDR monitor technologies. It is just the same log to rec709 conversion with two additional setups: exposure correction and soft clipping (by the way without gamut limiter in highlights). Without doubt this mode has right to exist, especially if Atomos improve this algorithm and make it more film-like as it done in RED cameras or Davinci ACES or pretty much all raw or Log converter engines. But today this mode is not good enough. And damn, that mode should be named Log to Rec709 and replace the first one haha >_<

So I only had to use my own conversion LUTs with exposure corrections unfortunately.

3) HDR monitoring mean that scene-reffered signal will be translated thru the monitor with high degree of compliance to scene brightness. Does your Atom HDR mode do this? Nope.
Log to HDR conversion should spread out input scene-reffered signal to the particular screen of the device taking in to consideration the brightness characteristics of it. Which in an ideal situation corresponds to some HDR EOTF standard. That's it.

Sorry for my probably bad english, I hope you will understand all this stuff.
Thanks order mine today I have the Ninja 2 now going 4K 60fps nice video I know its not new but still one of the best I've seen on www.youtube.com/techchecker still Thanks from the UK.
Hi photo Joseph I make mostly Documentary's and wanted to ask if buying an Atomos recorder really necessary for this type of shooting. The ninja V is what I am planing to get. Any advice would be appreciated . Thanks jf
Awesome!
@@photojoseph thank you so much . I can now safe the money and put it towards the Panasonic 12-35mm lens. Thanks again and really enjoy the informative videos. Jf
Unless you’re planning extreme color grading and/or planning to shoot very high dynamic range scenes, then probably not.
does it shoot 180fps in 10bit?
No, all VFR modes are 8-bit only.
Hi, Im big fan of you. Can you help me with one advice if you know. I plan buy atmos ninja V (inferno) for my gh5s. Do you know can I Autofocus when touch Atmos recorder/monitor like on LCD screen od gh5s? Thank you
You can not, but stay tuned. I’ll be showing something that I * think* will do that in the next few weeks.
Glad you blocked the guy. screw him. Your always talking about the product so I think its great
I close my eyes and you sound like a radio show in my car...
Pleas don’t close your eyes in your car… I mean, unless you’re not driving. Then it’s OK.
Any chance you would be willing to share a short clip of raw footage using ProRes?
Completely understand. Thanks for the video.
I’d don’t own those clips, so I can’t, sorry
we have the Ninja Assassin, is there any way to record on the Ninja and on the gh5s at the same time?
Thank you!
Yeah, just hit record on both
HI Joseph, I have the GH5, XLR1 Adaptor and Ninja Inferno. If I want to capture audio from my Mics, i.e shotgun or wireless lavs, I use the XLR 1 Adaptor, but what difference or advantage would it be to capture audio from the multi-pin connector on the side of the Inferno with the Atomos XLR Breakout Cable? Is it because you would record from the Ninja Inferno to sync the audio directly?
You got it. HDM is delayed by 3-4 frames usually
Thanks for your detailed reply Joseph. You've definitely got me thinking about how to tackle this. Thanks for mentioning
the possible sync issue while recording. Which can be adjusted in the inferno/Audio options menu. Select the + or - icon to delay the audio by the appropriate number of frames.
This is a good question. The audio will go from the XLR-1 through the camera and into the Inferno. If you capture directly to the inferno, you may have different options but you’ll also have to program in the delay. A question worth researching though is if you get the same full quality audio out the HDMI into the Inferno as you do coming into the camera via the XLR-1 and recording internally. I don’t know the answer.
I finally have a Ninja Inferno for my GH5. Is that the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport Video you are using?
Thanks Joseph.
Yep!
I had to return the SSD card I purchased. When I tried to record video, I got an error message: recording was canceled because card would not write fast enough. It was the
“SanDisk 1 TB ULTRA 3D NAND SATA III SSD-2.5-inch Solid State Drive - SDSSDH3-1T00-G25”.
Thanks again
James
Check with Atomos on recommended SSD drives
Great show. How do I find part 2? And What SSD card works the best? Just received my GH5S and inferno.
Thank you
James
Not sure which part 2 you’re looking for but scan the channel around that date and see if you can find what you’re after. As for the SSD, I just replied to your other comment, too. That’s a question for Atomos.
This is the best GH5 & GH5s traning video school ever thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Awesome show! informative, useful and real.
what about when info display is on gh5 how to record atomos clean image whitout those info bars but steel showing those info bars in atomos diplay.because i usually turn display around to save battery life in camera, i wan to see external monitor info display true gh5 camera.
Doesn’t work like that. The Atomos récords whatever comes from the camera.
I have got, both but it seems really hard to get a really hands-on explaination on how to use this recorder. I would love to see some8 real world examples on how to actually use the device to it's full potential. Use V-log or HLG and how do you make the best choices about about exposure etc. Using the GH5 natively is awesome but in conjunction with the Atomos it's just unclear. I only find videos that tell me about the functions, but no in depth / noob guidd on how to use them. Not even in your paid course Joseph. But then again, I love watching your videos. As soon as I've figured it out, I'll create a tutorial.
Just want to see him work on in-camera settings: 18:00min.  Also, as of this comment, I was able to use the Panasonic iPhone remote app to trigger recording to both the camera (internally) and the Inferno.  Not sure what I have set up differently than you... or maybe by now there was an app update that addressed this.  But it works and it's another tool at GH5 user's disposal.  Thanks!
There was a comparison done recently comparing internal recording to external recording and it was quite obvious that it there wasn't much reason to buy the Atomos recorder. And I wanted to originally wanted to buy it. Now, I'm not so sure.
If you want to shoot 4K 60p 10-bit then that’s the only choice. 10-bit gives you 1024 levels vs 256 levels so your gradients are much smoother. But yeah… the gap is closing for sure.
Hi Mate Im really new to external recorder also GH5. check your combination, I am really into it. just wonder if I could record with inferno only ,I mean the GH5 has no card in it . will this setup work? thanks
Yes, definitely. You do NOT need a card in the GH5 to record on the Atomos.
Awesome video. Thanks for all the information.
Can you please tell me, how the GH5 displays the 4k60p 10bit option in the menu. I bought the inferno for exactly that option, but the GH5 doesn't allow me to set it in the menu. Max is 4k60 at 8bit. Does the Gh5 automaticaly output the 10bit if it detects a suitable device connected?
Glad to help!
Really? Man, i was looking like half a year for a solution, and now this. Too bad not even the Panasonic and Atomos support knew this. great service.
Correct. There no menu; it just does. I know, I wish there was a confirmation too. But when you’re on 4K 60p, HDMI out is always 10-bit
Hi, Thanks very much for your very detailed explanations. Extremely usefull. Watching you from France, MERCI
Hey Joseph! Do you know if i can use an nvme drive (through a sata enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? I have tried 2 SSDs so far but they cant reach the 10bit-4K-60fps that the monitor advertises. (Sandisk ULTRA II 480Gb, and a slower corsair). Their customer support offers very little to no help unfortunately. Also no 1080p 120fps or 240fps is available. Thoughts on that? Cheers!
The SSD recorder has made me choose the Atomos over the BMD recorder. Used the BMD at a previous company and it was a really nice display/recorder but like you said, the SD card recording is inferior.
Thanks for the notice!
Ordered the Ninja last night! Unfortunately, the link you had in the description was to one that isn't Prime. Being an impatient person, I had to go with ordering one with Prime. :( Maybe add another link so others can order it. :)
Yep agreed. Super annoying
Joseph, for those of us who've said "Bye Bye" to Apple, will ProRes work just fine with Premiere on a Windows box?
Yes
Now 2018 with firmware 2.1, quality-wise, apart from the features and the possibility to use SSDs, is there any reason to record externally anymore?
I.e. does the GH5 put out a "better than HEVC 400Mbit" signal out of it's HDMI connector?
But does it put out 4k60 10bit 422 on HDMI? As far as I heared, it doesn´t, or does it? I´m right now not even sure if HDMI can support this...
EDIT: Apparently it works, I just found a german Test about that setup: https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Praxistest/10-Bit-60p--V-Log-L--mit-der-Panasonic-GH5-und-dem-Atomos-Inferno----Speedbooster-.html
GH5 can't record 4k60 10-bit 4:2:2 internally
