Behringer X AIR XR16 Digital Mixer Is Finally In My Live Broadcast Studio!

Photo Moment - September 06, 2017

The Behringer X AIR XR16 is up and running! Definitely not fully configured yet, but let me show you what it's like so far! Also, we're using YouTube's new Ultra Low Latency Streaming Mode. What do you guys think about it?

Hello, instead to connect an external video card? from MIXER MAINOUT TO CARD INPUT?
how did you run it from the air to the mac?
Aux out to USB audio interface, I think. This video is really old! I’m pretty sure the X Air can operate as a USB interface itself as well.
Hi - I'm watching this video 5 years after you made this. My ears pricked up when you said 2 of the inputs were for when returning audio from Skype. I don't use Skype but want to be able to make a Zoom call in 2022 but I can't figure out the USB connection from the X-Air to a computer and back. The USB socket is only for a USB stick for recording a 2 track mix of all the inputs, or playback pre-recorded tunes on the stick. It's not a USB out to a computer. Or am I missing something??? - I know the x-air 18 can do it but I don't need 18 channels. Peter.
Oh I see. You will need an audio input on your computer, yes. Some Macs have a dual headphone/microphone port, but that may take some special cabling to make work. Some PCs have a dedicated audio input port. The best is just to have a line-level input. You can buy a cheap USB audio adapter like this https://amzn.to/3LSOiTn or spend more money on a proper audio interface for better quality.
@@photojoseph Ok in theory yes. However, physically how do I connect from an XLR AUX port on the X-air into my computer? - Surely it has to connect via USB? - I hope I'm wrong.......
You’ve got it right. On the 16, the USB is quite limited. As you say this was five years ago, but the way I would have had it configured is audio out from one of the AUX ports to the Skype (or zoom) computer to send the host’s (my) audio, and a loop back into one of the inputs from that computer to bring in the guest’s audio. The Aux configurations let you choose separately what audio does and doesn’t go to each aux destination. It’s pretty great.
Are you still use Bheringer xr16 in your studio?
I am, but in a pretty basic way now. I process audio for live in the main studio with a MixPre because of the noiseAssist plugin (there's lots of background noise in the studio), and that routes through the XR16 but only for live productions.
Having individual phantom power is a must. Sending phantom power to a channel with something like the Helix plugged in will play havoc with the audio quality BIG TIME.
Can you add a cell phone for a podcast and do Mix Minus with this Mixer?
Thank you for making this video, It's a great help!
Could you solve a mystery for me? I'm trying to play pre-recorded tracks from 2 sources through my XR16; from my iPhone X most of the time, (lightening to 3.5mm), and my Tascam CD-RW900SL Pro at other times, (unbalanced (RCA) I/O, or S/DIFF digital I/O (optical and coaxial)). 1. What type of connection are you using from your iPhone into the Hi-Z inputs? Is there a DAC in the path? 2. What would you recommend for the CD player to mixer?
For the iPhone, if you have the Lightning to 3.5mm connection then. you just need a 3.5mm to dual-mono ¼" cable (where left/right are split into two cables). For the S/PDIF connection, yeah I think you'll need some kind of DA converter, but I don't really know… haven't used one of those in ages.
Correction: "S/PDIF digital I/O" from the CD player, sorry!
U are comparing old tech with new tech. Compare a TF or a CL or QL with XR and we see how cool it is..that will benefit.
as it connects to wirescat lonss I'm trying and I can't, could you please help me thanks!!!!
Hi. I connect my xr16 to laptop with USB cable A to A and audacity not see him.
I want to recording drums multitracks. Please help
I have the Xair12 and we use Wirecast to stream our live services..
how do I connect it to Wirecast so I can have sound going out live?
where is your main L/R connected?
Bro how to use this XR16 at the same time for live streaming like FB?
hai, can i use the mixer as a source for my conference software (zoom, skype) on my pc?
Yes!
Dude, Maybe reduce the caffeine?
I drink one, MAYBE two cups a day. Why do so many people assume I'm jacked up on caffeine, or worse? My mouth moves fast, and my brain (usually) moves faster. That's my life man… not everyone moves at the same pace.
It will caught up with you.
Not a chance
what compressor or precision limiter to get a vocal reduction only when shouting that doesent color sound so singer hears exacly same but lower no coloring below just limiting after ex 12 db......donrt want it to color even touch the other partsss just limit clean ........big hugs from ibiza
If this allowed multitrack recording I would buy it, going to have to go with the xr18.
@@tommurrayGTR Behringer site: uncompressed stereo recordings via the USB Stereo Recorder.

stereo not multitrack.
The XR18 allows multitrack recording, assuming this one does too
Totally… I do wish this had that. You can record from TWO sources though, as a stereo pair that you split. But not all inputs.
How you record your audio ?
In the X16 directly, however I've had issues where it randomly stops recording (tried different USB sticks, and the unit has even been in for service, but it still does it), so I also record to an external recorder for backup.
is there a tutorial on how to set this up to go live and record at the same time?
Check out Behringer’s YouTube channel for setup advice.
some of the best audio ive heard on youtube... better than more expensive productions!
was just about to point out you had the ipod channel selected but nvm lol
yes a gate sounds odd on a vocal channel when no other audio is also running.
did you try proper effects loop to reduce line noise? not sure if it was ambient room noise or line noise re: 25min
Why didn’t you go with the XAir 18 with its build in computer interface?
You have to convert the analog audio coming out of your XAir 16 to run it into the computer the XAir 18 has that functionality built in over USB.
Oh I think we're taking about two different products. There's the "X18" and the "XR18". The latter is the bigger version of what I have which is what I was thinking of. Either way, same question still applies 😁
Interesting. What advantage does this offer? (I'm not an audio expert by any stretch so I appreciate the information)
The XAir 18 has an built in USB 18x18 audio interface or some call it a sound card.
What do you mean by built in computer interface? The 16 and 18 are essentially the same but with more inputs. Both are controller via a computer or iOS app.
talk about the mixer begins at 8:20
@photojoseph - I have the xair 16 - and I usually record the audio to garageband - but the audio volume is always so low. How can increase the volume being sent out?
Behringer has a great walkthrough on their YouTube channel.
obviously 5 and 6 was setup to be used as a matrix. XR18 and the X air 18 does not a carry Matrix like the X32 but it can be configure to be a matrix. The only drawback is you lose two of your AUX, but you can also use your main left and right as additional output.
hey Joseph, can you use the X-air with software like OBS?
You can use OBS with the x-air, especially if you have the XR18 or X18.
The X-AIR is totally independent of your computer. It just outputs a mixed audio signal. So, any XLR to USB converter will allow you to use it with OBS.
This helped me a lot! Thanks.
I've picked up the 18 and my head is still spinning...... lol
Interesting but complete overkill for your needs. This is not a music program so crystal clear spoken voice is good enough.
PhotoJoseph It is a fun, interesting, and very powerful toy, for what this channel is. Keep focused on content. For someone mixing for live performances, an excellent tool.
Possibly, but it’s giving me the control over the audio quality and ability mix and reroute audio differently to different sources. It’s working out very well!!
Fun to see the X Air used with ATEM for live broadcast! I have an XR18 & ATEM 1 M/E 4K. Check out the AUTOMIX function on the X Air, Joseph (useful if you have multiple people on multiple mics: it adjusts mic levels automatically, depending on who's speaking!). Also, if you had the XR18 version, you could use USB to record each individual input plus Main L/R (to record in Logic, for example) as well as pass through audio over USB from computer to X Air. The Behringer X-Touch control panel is also so very helpful in live production (gives you physical controls, like a traditional mixer; talks to X Air over Ethernet). And with XR18 you can also use the P16 monitoring panel (super cool for adjusting/selecting what's in your headphones).
Thanks again Phillip, I appreciate the info and encouragement. Of course posts like yours usually cost me money… 😁
PhotoJoseph No connection with Behringer other than enjoying some of their tools! :)
My background is in video production (TV, postproduction) and otherwise dabbling in audio, lighting, music, art. I'm a big GH4 fan (GH3, GH4, FZ2500) and Blackmagic user (with a refurbished GVG110 to control my ATEM).

That Mini controller isn't for direct control of X Air mixers (some people have rigged up control using that; check Behringer Forum & YouTube for their experiments). A cheaper option than the full XTouch is the XTouch Compact: doesn't have LCD scribble strips. But both XTouch & Compact have motorized faders: the faders move, to correspond with their Settings whether you make changes in the computer software/iPad or on the control panel. These panels are also great to use with DAW (like Logic and Audition) and in editing (Premiere).

These X Air boxes are so full of features! I'm constantly learning new things about them, too. Now that you're seeing what they can do, I recommend you think about upgrading to the XR18 (or MR18), for even more useful features: multichannel 2-way channels via USB for recording/playback, more Aux outputs, extra Ethernet-based (but proprietary) port for connecting to monitoring stations (check out that Behringer P16M panel - great flexibility for a solo operator!). I've used USB for multitrack recordings of events, and so much easier than hooking up external audio recorder to Aux outputs.

Anyway, keep up the good work! As an adjunct instructor at local community college (video editing; motion graphics) I can appreciate how much time and effort you put into explaining things. :)
Oh wow… there's always more to play with! Never seen the AUTO MIX feature before. I'm not at the studio now and I've never noticed that UI but when I launch the X-AIR app here (not connected to the mixer) it does show the function… can't wait to play with that!

Then the control panel… I see the big one at $450 (ouch) but also there's this mini one for only $50! https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/XTouchMini?gclid=Cj0KCQiAwp_UBRD7ARIsAMie3XbKugkqff7PvxaX679uppuyF9bNwmNtUK91xzjZVejN5YDSJrx_hfMaAtq1EALw_wcB — would that do the same thing? I see it's USB connected though so does that USB into the mixer (AFAIK it only has a USB port for a memory stick to record to), or does it go to a laptop but still connect to the mixer on the network?

Finally, yeah I do wish my 16 had the ability to record each channel discreetly. That's definitely one feature it's lacking. I can however record a single stereo track, and assign any input or output to each channel, so for a two-person interview it does work. That said, I tried it for the first time yesterday for my interview with Ginger, and for some reason it stopped recording and corrupted the file at some point during the show! I ended up with an unusable 0K file on the memory stick. So bummed. I'll reformat the USB stick and try again.

So many toys!! Thanks Philip. Do you represent Behringer?
i have an xair 12 and my macbook pro air 13 doesnt recognize the mixer :( can you help me?
You probably have the wrong version of the X-AIR app installed. That was my mistake when I first set it up. Go to their website and make sure you get the right model app installed.
Use those noise gates when you're mixing a live drum kit or in a place with a noisy background, not when you're sitting in a (mostly) quiet room. I use an X18.
Natürlich. Buy them all.
The Linthicums what about if they have an x18? Do they wish they had an xr18?
airjaff Everyone I know who has an XR16 wishes it were an 18.
I got an xr16 and x18 they are great, I feel I should have bought an xr18 instead of the x18 because the form factor is so much better on the xr16 and much lighter
