Copy performance compared; SD vs CFexpress vs SSD

Photo Moment - October 03, 2024

One of my nerdiest videos yet… I wanted to know, so I figured you might want to know, too! How much of a difference does SD vs SSD vs CFexpress card make? What about the readers? And the destination?!

Long time viewer here, this is one of your best.
@@photojoseph just damn useful for pros...
Ha! That’s awesome. Definitely an unexpected compliment on THIS video! 😅
With the SSD, you might be able to organise your workflow to not need to copy it at all. I first learned of this idea from BlackMagic.
Yes, copying twice is good practice if you need to immediately wipe and reuse the SSD. If not, then as long as you have a nightly backup in place, then you can copy once, leave the original on the SSD, and then let your backup run. Ideally it then backs up offsite as well. Three copies. Watch my Backblaze ad in the first RØDE video to see what I mean! ;-)
@@photojoseph Many YouTubers advocate backing it up when importing so as to have two copies. That means copying twice. If you use the SSD from the camera, there's nothing to prevent you from duplicating when done. I typically use two big memory cards, I don't yet have a camera that records photos to SSD, I'm hoping that when I do I will be able to record to both.
Yeah, IMHO that’s a terrible workflow. First of all you’ll have to copy the video off eventually, unless you want to buy a new SSD when this one fills up. Second, that means you’re working from the only copy. If anything happens to the file — accidental deletion, corruption, overwriting — it’s gone. Your shot is gone forever. I advise to never ever work off the original SSD. It’s no different than working off your SD card. I think it’s bad advice and wish people would stop suggesting it.
Looks like realistic over 2times faster in the past year. ⏩Thank You
Great video. This video is for new and veteran creators.
Thanks!
Great video as always! 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀
Great drives make great content! 😃
Benchmarks for the win! 👍Always good to check back in on these devices over time. And those animated tables tho' <chef's kiss!> It's all there, pick yer' price v. performance.
Thanks mate! This comment was hidden; I think the angled brackets made YouTube think it was a url embed 😅 Published now!
Thank you for sharing this tests, very helpful. What about CfExpress Type A for Sony cameras...
@photojoseph ...It's a lot to learn with all this tech stuff...I just don't want to waste my time getting excited about something that doesn't apply to my equipment. Thanks for replying back & letting me know I should continue to watch. I wasn't trying to be mean, with my reply, it's just that this stuff is overwhelming at times. Thanks again.
Type A cards should fall in between SD and Type B.
LOL wow. Actually it’ll still be interesting. CFxA aren’t quite as fast as B (at least from OWC) however there’s a lot more to the video. I encourage you to watch it anyway. The SSD portion may surprise you.
@sergiubn...good question, now I don't have to waste my time watching this video.
You’re welcome. And I don’t shoot Sony so I couldn’t tell you, sorry!
