Focus Bracketing for Macro Focus Stacking, Using the GH5
Photo Moment - March 23, 2017
The other day we looked at the LUMIX camera's built-in focus stacking feature https://youtu.be/cC439BngIq4, which is awesome — but what if you want more control? In today's Photo Moment, we'll look at the Focus Bracketing feature, then using those images to focus stack in Photoshop.

I FIGURED IT OUT!!! And apparently someone suggested this in the chat, but without @'ing me I didn't see it. It's because I had the HDMI cable plugged in, which is how you see the screen. I'll do this again tomorrow, properly. Sorry folks!
7yrs later, this is exactly what I am looking, I even searched GH5M2 online menu, couldn't find the focus bracketing setting, but post focus; tho other tutorials contain focus bracketing operations, but using other models, I need to know the exact model GH5M2. I have been an Oly user, need to add another MFT body, compare GH5ii vs OM5, still photography is my NO 1 priority. But GH5ii advanced video capability is irresistible, now I see the focus bracketing on GH5. To me, it's no brainer, GH5M2!!!
Hi. I have a GH6 and Godox V350 flash. It seems we cannot do focus bracketing or burst mode photos with a flash on Lumix cameras ☹️ I m wondering why. Olympus can do it.
Apparently there is a bug with the focus stacking when an hdmi cable is connected. Perhaps your output to the TV was messing it up. Just a thought

So has anyone discovered any real meaning behind the "step" increment that would help one better choose how to bracket the focus? There must be some algorithm that Panasonic is using to do the bracketing.
+PhotoJoseph To look at a single shot of one of your stacks directly in camera, just tip on the focus stack icon and you can browse, select and even delete single pictures.
How many shots could you get for a 2mm insect from front to back?
+jesoby Ok that's an extreme Macro lens and also manual focus. The way the GH5 does this is by incrementally moving the autofocus small amounts. There is no published measurement of how much or little it can move, if there even is a minimum. As I said, it depends on the lens and original subject. I have both the 30mm and 45mm macro lenses and if you'd like I can test what they will do starting at the closest focus point but there's no real way to measure.
+jesoby that would depend on the lens, and how close you are to the subject. If you can give me a very specific example, I will try to test it for you. That sounds cool.
Struggling to see why you'd shoot a bunch of wide open images to blend in post, why not shoot it at f5.6 ?
+paul rysdale Ideally you'd find a sweet spot of the lens. I don't recall what aperture I did this demo at but I don't think it was wide open, was it? Regardless this was a demo of the steps needed. As I believe I said in the beginning (although I did have to do this twice since day 1 was a total fail so perhaps I didn't state it this time), you would spend some time finding the ideal settings for your subject, lens, etc. and proceed from there. But yes I'd ideally shoot at something like 5.6; not all the way open but certainly not all the way closed.
Joseph, do you have any info on Panasonic announcing that they will be dismantling their digital camera division in an upcoming restructuring?
+PhotoJoseph Got more info, just in case anyone else is following this. Panasonic released a HUGE document about it. Basicly they are not going to maintain a separate Camera division any longer. They are folding the Camera division into the professional video division. They will also be trimming down the camera product line. It looks like they are going to stop making point and shoots, almost all the bridge cameras, and focus all their resources in to ILC products. Personally I think this is a smart move on their part.
Exactly what I was thinking. But the rumor has some strong legs right now in some of the forums I go to. Working in manufacturing I know rumors like this come around all the time. Mostly they are false, but it seems all the camera makers are struggling right now so these types of rumors are getting a lot of traction.
+J Benson Well then that's just stupid and obviously wrong. Rumors websites make their money on sensationalistic click bait. There may be a restructuring; I have no idea and if I did I'm sure I couldn't comment on it. But abandoning the brand is just stupid fantasy. No company puts this much R&D into a product only to abandon the entire product line a year later. Sounds like something a competitor would try to spread knowing that the GH5 is about to cut into their margins.
Photorumors.com posted it., so it is definitely a rumor as far as I can tell. I knew you have contacts at Panasonic and was wondering if you had heard anything about it. When Nikon made their restructuring announcement people wrongly assumed a lot about the future of Nikon cameras, I have even seen a (rumored) quote "We may see the abandonment of Lumix brand products in 2017". It just seemed odd to me that such an announcement would come just as Panasonic was releasing a $2000 flagship camera.

I remember seeing somewhere that the GH5 would show the reason for all greyed out menu items. If this is implemented on the firmware version you have could you please demonstrate it on one of your next shows.
I like your implementation for a desk top tripod. Much more sturdy than what I use, so I will make one soon. Does your board have little feet to keep it from rocking? I was thinking of a triangle board for uneven surfaces as well.

Chris ChattenThe other thing about the new 12-60 which was a huge help is that it has a lock on the lens hood. Most of what my wife and I shoot is outdoors and hiking or walking so that was a huge help.

Chris ChattenThe other thing about the new 12-60 which was a huge help is that it has a lock on the lens hood. Most of what my wife and I shoot is outdoors and hiking or walking so that was a huge help.
