Let’s Talk About HDR Video (LIVE Replay)

Photo Moment - April 08, 2021

What do you want to know about HDR video production? Come armed with your questions about shooting, editing and delivering in HDR. We'll switch to general Q&A if/when we run out of HDR questions.

This is a replay of the LIVE show! I go live every Tuesday 10am Pacific or Wednesday 9pm Pacific (or some other random time if those don't work out) for a show of random chattering and meandering tech. It's a great place to get any lingering questions you have, answered!

Hi Joseph, when we shoot in Vlog-L and apply the panasonic lut in Final Cut pro, does it mean the meta data has been lost and video has been converted to SDR. Can we export this video in HDR still ?
👍🏻
@@PhotoJosephLIVE yes I am, you can see some of my work on my channel 😊
Right on. Are you doing HDR?
@@PhotoJosephLIVE thanks Joseph, I have recently move to Sony which gives some amazing colours out of the box so it sorted it for me. Your work and tutorials helped me a lot when I was using Panasonic 🙏🏽
Applying a LUT doesn't remove metadata. However you can't export to HDR from an SDR library. You have to switch the entire library to "Wide gamut" mode, and then edit on a Rec2020 timeline, to export to HDR. I sometimes use a LUT but more often than not, I simply set the colorspace override to PQ and manually grade from there.
Good coverage here - thanks Joseph. I remember back when ATOMOS launched the Sumo and called it an HDR monitor you could use for grading but then backed off of that marketing message. Interested to hear about your experience with the Neon when that arrives. Also interesting that the workflow for YouTube HDR includes a command-line app. Sounds like HDR will continue to be fairly niche until YouTube simplifies the process.
Thanks man. The command line tool really isn't hard… just stupid. And hopefully I can get this out of the niche territory with my videos!

Thank you 🙏🏼
