I've been playing with the Leica LUMIX 100-400mm zoom lens and finally found something great to shoot with it… a Safari! (in Oregon… go figure).

Joseph I've watched everyone of your videos wtice and I took your gh5 course. I had to laugh when at around 14 minutes you are talking a bout the AF and Stablizer switces on the lens itself, then you stare at the Focus switch and dimiss it and say that's all there is. LOL. WHy wouyld you do that? Not even mention it. I watched this 30 plus minute video only to get an idea of how to use the switch and get a better understanding of it. You are not alone. Many videos mention it but roll right over it. What is it about this switch that youtuber experts like you aviod it like the plauge. It really disturbs me why I can't find out after 3 full days of looking everywhere a man could. Boo.
Been thinking about buying this lens until I look at the reviews. A common thread is the mount is easy to break. Metal screws are screwed into plastic, when they break the lens is trash as it can’t be fixed. I’m not sure if the people writing the reviews mishandled the lens or if in fact it’s a cheap way out for Panasonic to save a few cents in manufacturing. What’s your take on the lens? $1500 is a bit much for a throw away item.

Hi Joseph, great videos as always sir, I have just ordered a G9 for wildlife photography - Would you be able to recommend the best Telepho lens please. I have tested the 100-400mm which i find a little stiff on the focusing - I was then recommend the faster 50-100mm lens which would still provide me with 400mm. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
I’ve used both… (you mean the 50-200, not 50-100) and I do love it. If you don’t need the extra reach of the 100-400 (200 vs 400 is a big difference), then yeah go for the 50-200! If you can, please use my link https://geni.us/3vNAJm
I turn off IBIS or lens stab when I take my tripod and slider combo hiking with me. Sometimes you'll get this weird drift if you leave it on.
Street Monuments that’s not necessarily true. Modern cameras recognize that it’s not moving and disable the stabilization. Older cameras definitely have a “constantly moving” behavior when IS is on though.
Yes, that’s the stabilizer fighting the slider’s movement. Turning it off is the right thing to do!
Apparently you'd turn the lens IS off at shorter focal lengths on Olympus cameras/non dual-IS compatible sensor stablilised cameras... I just picked a 100-400 up today so haven't tested yet :D

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX8 body and the Panasonic 100-400 mm are both splash proof.

I was thinking of upgrading from the 100-300mm vs I but sadly your copy of the lens with all the extra stabilisation seemed no sharper than the one I have.
The 100-300mm mkii is wealther-sealed and dual-is compatible, it's a very good lens. However,I'm selling mine since buying the 100-400. Interested?
I am thinking along similar lines; I currently have the 100-300mm, but I'm thinking of upgrading to the 100-400mm. I am not totally convinced to switch going off the images shown in this video. There seems to be lots of missed focus shots and the sharp ones don't seem super sharp. Obviously the 100-300mm won't work with the dual IS, is not weather-sealed, has no focus limiter, no tripod mount bracket either, but the price of the Leica is pretty high! What to do?...
Well that is very encouraging to hear especially as you also own the 100-300, which while sharp in sunny light, has woeful focus in moderate or low light.
+Mark Walker You're watching a 1080p video… pretty hard to judge lens sharpness. I have the original 100-300 and this 100-400 Leica is way sharper and better contrast. The new 100-300 I have not shot with however.

Joseph does your 100-400 fit snugly onto your GH5? There seems to be quite a lot of movement on mine and wondering if that's normal.
You mean the body/lens connection? Very snug. Movement isn't good… light could leak in. I'd try another unit if you can compare!
Am not into video and have read and heard the GH-5 is excellent with video but lacking in RAW stills. E-M1 Mark II instead? What's your take, Mr. Joseph?
The new Olympus OMD EM1-2 looks pretty good, especially if stills is your preference. If you combined that body with the Olympus 300mm F4 & 1.4 TC you'd have an awesome combo. The Olympus has a phase detection/contrast AF system whereas Panasonic is contrast detect only. I have seen some stunning wildlife images on Flickr that have been shot with the aforementioned gear.
"Panther" is a general name (Panthera is the genus of the big cats of the world). What we usually call a panther is either a melanistic jaguar or leopard, or a Florida "panther," which is a puma. Awesome pictures and lens!
