Hello Photo Joseph. Is Panasonic going to give us any new update about fixing the autofocus? ...Yes, yes...There is a lot of other great features in this camera (no doubt) but this totally fails. People who have already bought the camera just wanna know when they can expect those improvements of autofocus. It's like if you bought a great new car but you can't open windows. :) You can drive with that but... Thank you for some update.
Ok. Thank you.
The only official statement is the one that I've already delivered. No other information is available now.
I hate that the poor autofocus is distracting from what a beast of a camera this is. 4K 60, 10bit 422 internal, hardly any rolling shutter, no crop, full size hdmi. So much fantastic tech. The autofocus is contrast detect, put it up against the a7sii which is a more even challenge. (Hence why Casey Neistat switched to the a7rii.) pitting the GH5 against the a6500 is crazy, it just has better continuous autofocus tech. All that said, I wouldn't trust the GH5 to autofocus, then again I'm a professional keyboardist, not a professional shooter. I'll get one, but I'll wait to see what Sony releases. Probably better tech, but probably will overheat in hot weather.
its always nice to see peoples behave as gown up
Since all of this talk about malfunctioning autofocus on the GH5 has hit the YouTube headlines, I decided to test out the continuous AF on my GX80 bodies - the UK version of your GX85. As long as the cameras are recording video internally, and I select continuous AF in both the still AND video menus, both my bodies autofocus faultlessly, even in fairly poor light. If anything, the lockon focus speed is too QUICK, if anything, and it's a shame there doesn't seem to be a way of slowing this down, to make a smoother transition between refocus points when automatically pulling focus. I find it incredulous, on Panasonic's behalf, that they can get continuous AF to function well on a midrange camera, but not on their brand new flagship, as seems to be the case from watching Max's video. The only time I managed to fool the AF system on the GX80 was when I tried to focus on a subject that was too close for the lens. Personally, I use single AF as a general rule, but I recently shot my first wedding since changing to the GX80s, choosing to set the B-roll camera to continuous AF, because I wasn't sure who would be operating it at all times. I'm currently in the process of editing the final video from several hours of material, and , again, there is no evidence of the continuous AF failing at any time.
Check out my (unedited) video of the GH5 in action using AF on a gimbal and more ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUm49kFxmMw&t=42s
Joseph, here is question you asked me to post: When AF set to 225-area. When pushing "focus area set" function button, the maximum area that can be selected in yellow is one square less around the entire area? Does it ever reset to entire 225? What if you select less? Or move it?
+John Schwaller I’ll address your question LIVE right here https://youtu.be/U5ugqfqaA6I on PhotoJoseph‘s Photo Moment 2017-04-17
I think I got the best tip from this video for my G85. I hate when in AF it does that hunting thing every so often. I can live with slow AF, what I think looks terrible is the back and forth hunting these cameras do.

I never thought about using manual focus when doing hand held stuff with the camera when I am moving around but your tip of just raising the aperture to keep everything in focus and just throw it in manual can totally work. I am not looking for a shallow depth of field in the stuff we do so if I can keep everything in focus the whole time I am totally ok with that if it means no more hunting!
+Fun With The Bugs Cool. Honestly when I think of AF in the GH4, when it came to video, I almost never used it. I'm just so used to manual, and with focus peaking on, you can nail focus super fast and then it won't drift. I'm not making excuses but even at super shallow DoF that's how I work. Some of my favorite lenses are manual only!
nice you guys got together - hopefully Panasonic is following you guys - if improvements are needed - then hopefully we will see firmware updates soon -
just like the XT2 there are many new settings for tracking focus in video - and hopefully yes both Fuji and Panasonic will make these presets - accessible quick - I struggle with my Fuji Xt2 with the settings -

hopefully Panasonic will Max a Luminary as well - he really knows his stuff - Great jobs guys - hopefully Panasonic will pick up the travel tab

look forward next video
Hey @PhotoJoseph did you see Casey Neistat upgraded from his a6500 to the GH5? Kind of a curious move for a blogger relying on CAF don't you think?!?! Seems to works just fine too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqBbqjM_pKE
+FadedSunEater Oh yes, I've seen it :-) I can think of three very good reasons for a vlogger to use the GH5 over the Sony — battery life, no overheating, articulating LCD. (Focus is a different topic)
Glad y'all did this and didn't turn into a rivalry. btw I live in Spokane, I would of loved to work on this
In both your tests, there is a factor you guys are not considering. With my test, the GH5 auto focus works perfectly. I'll wait for my wife and Kids to come home so they can be my test subjects.
I found a fix or should I say the answer to everyone's Auto Focus issue. I spent days on research and I think I nailed it down. Since you have some connection to Panasonic, DM or video call me and I'll send you my findings. as long as I am credited for finding the fix. With my findings, the GH5 works perfect and fact when autofocusing

I just try to call the number on the site and sent you a message on Facebook
+TechMyMoney Can't message you from here. Message me via http://www.photojoseph.com please
With VLogl the native ISO is 400 ISO for sure. It's amazing! Well worth buying as you will get up to 12 stops of dynamic range! Color graded footage is fantastic!
figure out settings, bullshit. pdaf or gtfo.
Joe, my GH5 AF settings were pretty simple:

1-area AF (the larger central box, not the spot setting)
All custom AF settings turned off
14-140mm Panasonic lens in my case
There's no point in doing all of this. Read the manual. It states that the slow autofocus during 4k video is intended due to the high accuracy or some BS Panasonic pulled out their ass
Should all this AF hate for the GH5 be clarified that it is Video only or does it "Suck" for stills also? 9 FPS mode? How about compared to Panasonic's other cameras(i.e. GX8)?
+jon bilson Stills AF is superb
Oh, and please?
Can you sneak in a quick demo of stills continuous AF with action? Please?!
+jon bilson Video only
The 15mm is just as sharp or sharper than the 20 1.7 The 15 is amoung the top 6 sharpest m4/3 lenses
@PhotoJoseph @Max Yuryev the version II lenses also have the faster focusing motor compared to version I lenses as well better weather sealing, smoother/ redsigned iris, Duel IS 2, and cosmetic changes. Focusing motor being the most relevant here.
hahaha so good you guys got to do this.
I hope that they didn't just use a lens with such a shallow DOF for most of their tests. Many of us don't do that. Looks like Max wants a worst case scenario. That's fine, but I'd expect to see more mainstream lenses too.
+Ken Ross Even with a lens with large DoF, there's still "perfectly focused" and "in focus". You can tell the difference when the focus is off just a little bit. We tested a variety of lenses though.
This is great
glad I didn't waste 18min watching this useless video. Guys, can you just get out there and film something interesting and less blah blah blah?
There is a price for everything out there. I like to see happy smiling people but I think I'm still returning my gh5 after this week and will revisit it once Panasonic fix it is so it works like on the external recorder.
@PhotoJoseph - Is there any communication between You and Panasonic about auto focusing issue? All of us are waiting something official or not official reply from the vendor.
Good to see your cooperation in this topic, good luck for tommorow.
True that!
Hi Dan! Not sure if you saw/noticed this--- PANASONIC THEMSELVES ACCEPT THAT AUTO-FOCUS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GH5>>>>> 332nd page of the GH5 Advance manual say "sometimes it is difficult to focus while recording 4K motion pictures. This phenomenon occurs when the camera is trying to record with highly accurate focus at a reduced Auto-focus speed, and is not a malfunction"

NOW I DOUBT A FIRMWARE WILL EVER GOING TO BE RELEASED TO FIX THIS ISSUE!!
I shoot ONLY video and use MF most of the time---90%--okay, maybe 85%. But even at that I'm disappointed that the GH5 has such poor AF. It hunts. I'd love it as a talking head cam for interview--but it hunts, just like cams in 2010.
If I have a client that gesticulates and moves a lot focusing in interviews becomes a further problem.

Panasonic's image noise issues remain perhaps an unfixable problem because of the small sensor.

But you would think the AF might be something that could be brought to state of the art standards. As it is, we're still back in 2010 or earlier---for a 2000.00 cam!!!!

If the AF were good for general shooting I'd still use MF most of the time in hand held shooting--but I would find many uses for AF to make my work easier.

But at this point the AF on the GH5 is not dependable for video even in the most basic of ways....and VIDEO is why most people will want to buy this cam.

Let me repeat this: VIDEO IS WHY MOST PEOPLE WILL WANT TO BUY THIS CAM--VIDEO IS WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL!!!---among snapshot cams it's one among many. Go buy an iPhone 7+ for your "snapshots." The GH4 was outstanding for its 4k features---3 or 4 years ago. But that was then...this is now. And now even Smart phones have 4k---and, wait for it, dual pixel AF.

You can't get away with poor AF in 2017---not when a freaking Smart Phone has stable and good dual pixel AF!! Come to you senses.

Sony understands this--they've understood it for several years--witness the A6000.

Canon understands this regarding video---AF for stills shooters means nothing---NOTHING to video shooters---stiils shooting AF is INADEQUATE for run and gun video shooters in 2017....and yet, VIDEO is what the GH5 excitement is supposed to be about.

Having undependable AF on the GH5 VIDEO camera is like delivering a flat back left tire for the latest Lexus.

Dependable AF is even on a Smart Phone in 2017--for God's sake!!! And you don't even have it on your 2000.00 camera!!!

You can't see 10 bit unless you do extreme grading.

But you can sure see a hunting wandering AF system on any camera. Wouldn't you rather shoot at 1080p 8 bit with the 80D's DEPENDABLE AF that keeps faces, etc in focus, than a 10 bit cam that hunts?

High bit rates, etc are nice to put on a FaB (features and benefits) spec sheet....but who the heck cares how high the bit rate is if its not in focus or can't hold focus!??
It kinda sucks and Panasonic said it was kinda awesome
Nobody use continuous autofocus in Video. So Who cares about it? Tap to Focus works perfect on the gh5.
Not sure where you have been. Tons of people purchasing the GH5 would use AF in video...assuming it worked well. There are plenty of C100 owners and C300 owners that use dual pixel AF (cause it's actually good) and many Sony & Canon shooters that have good AF have figured ways of integrating it for some situations and don't want to lose that. Can't tell you how many people ask about AF performance. Many are shooting gimbals without follow focus, have unmanned cameras with moving subjects, or are doing first person shooting without a camera operator (vlogs, youtube, tutorials, weddings). Again, YOU may not care about AF which is perfectly fine. Remember, at $2000 many people are trading UP from consumer $1000 cameras to the GH5 looking for something better. Don't assume because it includes things like 10bit 422 that only pros with FS5's and RED's are interested. Panasonic talked up AF performance in video like crazy in their interviews and advertises that ability. If it falls short, that particular market will be pissed...and it is. I'm sure you would be pissed if you found out 10bit 422 quality looked like crap (assuming you wanted that ability) after it was heavily marketed. Actually...that kind of happened too!
Really? Of course people use AF in video. Where have you been? smh
Yep...tap through an underwater case 50m underwater with thick gloves. Sure...no problem...
Good point Jorge. The M.O. of using a steady cam is often a wide angle lens stopped down and hyper focal distance dialed in. How the heck have Hollywood cinematographers been using steady cams for decades with no auto focus? They don't have a focus puller on those steady cam shots that I'm aware of.
That's what I keep on posting but then Max is gonna come back saying he needs it for gimbal use. lol, I've been using steadicams and gimbals and believe me having af on a gimbal isn't a 'much needed' thing.
Great to see two of my favorite subscription guys together in harmony:) Peter Gregg has a recent video up in which he had a private conversation with a "high up" Panasonic person, who gave Peter the specific settings for best video auto focus following for the gh5. At top of list was the 225 focus points setting, and so on. Hope y'all use those settings as part of test to see if it helps.
Yeah, but in the next video he changed his settings and gave up on AF. He went back to his GH4 technique.
It makes sense if you watch the video, in a nutshell when 225 is used it frees up the processor to devote more power to auto focus in continuous mode.
Can't see how 225 could be the best when it's the camera that decides on what to focus on.
Morning!!!
Glad that you are working together. Two heads are better than one. Thanks for pursuing this issue with the GH5. Any and all information will help me. I get mine tomorrow.
This is great. There are no really bad cameras these days, only cameras that are better or worse for certain situations.

Being able to go through settings and actually provide the best settings for different types of photography and video. And if it doesn't work, just say so and provide an alternative solution/camera.

Looking forward to seeing what you guys produce!

All the best
Agreed! Can't wait :) 2 of my favourite subs
I got better autofocus with the 12-35mm 2.8 V2 than with my 25mm 1.7, even when doing back button focusing. At times the 25mm 1.7 wouldn't focus at all.
Make sure the your focus speed is NOT set to low.
hi from holland !
The DVX200 has a publicized native ISO of 500 so there is no way the older GH4 native ISO is 800. 400 ISO should be the native ISO of the GH4 which matches the exposure of 0dB when the GH4 is switched to show dB instead of ISO.
When switched to db the GH5 starts from -6, -3, 0, etc so makes sense its base it 400.
I was wondering if some of Max's problems were there because he was using older lenses that he had from the GH4. If he did use older lenses, were those updated? I believe there is an update for them.
Hi Guys, its a great moment to see and hear you both in this lifestream. I´m from Austria and get my GH5 last weekend. At first a have bought a olympic lense 7 to 14 f2,8 wideangle, because my 12-35 OIS f2,8 ist´nt available at this time. My first landscape photos are amazing and sharp! The last days i looked so many clips on youtube about the bad fokus of the GH5 and this bad news have worn me down. Now, so many things are clear, and my first testing movies and photos are amazing! Now, three days later, It´s a real good feeling, not least about the very good work of Joseph! So many Thanks for your time and your clearing Work about the GH5.
Tried out the 15mm 1.7 yesterday and it was pretty amazing. I was like, "This thing is so cute!" Lol. That and the 25mm 1.4 were pretty impressive. Very small. Focusing manually will take some getting used to. Very small. On my 42.5mm 1.2 I find that it's easy to bump the aperture ring which is at the very front of the lens, and right in front of the focus ring. Very easy to accidentally change the aperture when focusing or handling the camera. I'm guessing it's just matter of getting used to it.
Thanks for doing this guys. Great photomenship! Great example to others as well on how to handle disagreements and how to find resolutions.
My vintage Takumar 50mm f/1.4 (m42 mount) arrives tomorrow, while my m42-to-m4/3 adapter will take another week to reach me.. What do I dooooargh!?! (facepalm)

Jokes aside, great camera, I've already spent several hours configuring it and I think I'll be able to settle with a decent setup still this year. :D

Waiting for the footage from your Max-day, Joseph. :)
Its a very intellectual backdrop:)
Happy with my gh5. Took some pics and video yesterday. Can't wait to see your result.
hey guys! for me, face recognition only works well for pictures, but for video, tracking works like a charm. Did you try that with the GH5 to see if it delivers?
Do you Guys know what is going on with the 10 bit files Not Working good in Premier Pro and even Final Cut Pro x ?
Thanks
I'm not sure, but I do know transcoding to prores does the trick.
I think some people on youtube have found a solution in some OS/program updates.
I grabbed v-log from b&h it wasn't too tough. 400 ISO.
Awesome job guys! Nice to see the collaboration
Very happy to see you guys coming together to help up with the gh5!
