Pocket Ultrascope by Blackmagic Design - First Look

Photo Moment - February 10, 2017

I finally got the Blackmagic Design Pocket Ultrascope to work! This is a first look video; I'll come back again after I'd had more time with it.

The Blackmagic Design Pocket UltraScope is a portable video scopes system allowing you to see your SDI video source in a variety of formats on a computer screen. Unfortunately, getting this to work has been a challenge… but I finally did it! Watch the video to learn how.

Hi Joseph .. canni use this device at obs / vmix as video capture ?
Hey @photojoseph, thanks for the video. because this is a discontinued item I was wondering if you know of anyone who may still have one they are willing to sell. we use blackmagic design gear and this would be a great asset for our mobile rig.
@@photojoseph Thanks for the reply.
Not offhand… it's not supported on modern hardware so it's not terribly useful anymore. If you go to the BMD site you can see dedicated hardware (monitors) to do this, but not a device like this unfortunately.
@11:13 Did you figure out a way to zoom in to affect the scopes without using a tele lens?
No :(
No RGB overlay?
Thanks for your efforts and I want to buy mft lenses for this camera, What is your recommendation?
+Mustafa Shawarib That's a very open ended question. Tell me what you want to shoot and I'll respond live on tomorrow's show.
Hey Joseph, Just wondering what "Chat Feed" and "Wirecast" menu options do within your Atem Software Control. I've never seen these before so I'm wondering if that is a plugin of some sort? Thanks!
Ahhh of course! Thanks for filling me in!
Those are AUX outs that I've renamed. One feeds to my chat system and one feeds to my Wirecast system. There are two more (I think) that I can utilize, and each one can have a unique feed.
I am really happy that you are covering the video side! Big like that now the white bar disappears sometimes!
+David Skaliczky Sure, if/when I get into the hundreds of thousands or millions but now I need support if this is to continue. The Patreon thing is a dud. People just don't want to pay for content.
Yes, it's much better like this. Less disturbing, but maybe catching more attention at the same time. On the other hand as you will have more and more viewer, I would encourage you to remove it and make it visible only at the beginning and the end of the show.
+David Skaliczky Haha thanks. You like the animation? Being there all the time obviously blocks part of the shot but I realized if it's always there, it's never there. People won't see it. This way it can grab attention. It's automated to come up 10 seconds after a switch to the main camera, and hold for 15.
That was interesting, but definitely not what I was expecting from the title. I thought it was going to be about a portable digital microscope, or an accessory to turn a digital camera into a microscope. I shoot some video, but not nearly enough to justify buying a gadget like that.
+Sean Marc Nipper It's certainly true that I don't shoot much video, but I AM aware of the highly regarded Blackmagic video cameras. I'm also aware that some well-known camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, and possibly others) also make microscope adaptors for their cameras, so the idea of a Blackmagic microscope adaptor seemed entirely plausible.
Sean Marc Nipper lmao at this
Dave, It's evident you don't shoot much video if the title threw you off given that "Blackmagic Design" does not make Portable microscopes.
Sorry! I guess the word "scope" applies to lots of things. I didn't name the product though ;-)
the sound phase meter only works if you have stereo signal, you seem to be running the same audio in both L and R
Aha! Yep, I'm mono. OK Thanks!
The scope on the upper right is a vector scope, usually helpful for correcting skin tones.
I think a YouTube channel called Kinetek has info on this.
+Shon Jones Very nice! Can't wait to get into this more.
+Shon Jones oh very handy then, thanks
Think Vector or Scalar quantity, the scope can judge the amount of color and how saturated each one is. So in a color grading program you would isolated the skin tones and the scope can tell you how far off you are. Same with any color. That could be the solution to your gamma right there.
He Joseph. Well that blew my mind!!!!! :-) No major interest to me BUT you made it interesting Cheers.

Now off topic. I notice that you had a screen with a black back/surround so presumably not an apple product?
What is it?
What external screen would you recommend to go with a fully loaded iMac 5K to edit photos
Have you done a photo moment on this subject?
How about it?
Oh and possibly have a range of prices not just the expensive end!
Thanks ;-) External screen for an iMac? I have a Dell 1080p I use in vertical orientation to hold media or thumbnails. I use the built-in though as my primary. There are tons of monitor reviews out there and I couldn't possibly do a comprehensive comparison. On my desk in broadcast you're seeing an LG 4K monitor but it's being used in regular 1080p mode for mirroring. I have that because I will be doing some full 4K UHD recordings (Photos 2.0 training) soon. Using it now for consistency.
