Power Solutions for Panasonic LUMIX BGH1 Cinema 4K Box Camera

Photo Moment - September 10, 2021

The LUMIX BGH1 box camera is extremely versatile as both a studio and a field camera. If you're going to take it outside, then, of course, you're going to need to power it. Since you're likely to be using additional hardware like a monitor, a recorder, and/or even a follow-focus system, with multiple pieces to attach and power, some pretty cool power systems are available. This video explores many different options!

Don't forget to check out the BGH1 with SIRUI Anamorphic Lenses! https://youtu.be/jLvhw8eMAxw
You got me with the let me charge my phone. 😂 I love the whole rig set up man. Awesome 🔥
Joseph! I wanted to use a V mount battery but only have one D-tap for my set up and I wanted to run my Nucleus-m via d-tap! I’m using the small rig vb155 but trying to find the right cable. The usb-c is only 5.0v and a normal
Battery is 7.5v so I’m trying to work around it looking for a 12v DC to 12v DC that fits the Panasonic DC in port. Tried a dummy battery from KondorBlue but didn’t fit. Any recommendations?
Get a V-mount plate that has a d-tap on it so you gain another plug.
Thank you very much for the tip of the SWIT battery, what also good to know is … this battery can also be charged by the DC socket/pole connector ! with the SWIT S-3010 charger, that costs about $25 a real money saver, and also from the SWIT brand.
I want to use the PoE+ solution, but powered from a fpv drone. will i destropy anything in the camera by adding a 12v source to the other end of the ethernet cable ?
Interesting. You’d have to look up the power delivery of the Ethernet port; I don’t know. What does PoE+ output normally? I think a d-tap to camera DC port might be better, but it needs to be regulated, like this one: https://www.adorama.com/ipdteva24.html
This was the only video I could find about this cage thanks
He said that you need the charger to charge the official batteries. Does that mean you can't charge them in the camera if ever needed?
Correct, the batteries do not charge on the camera. And you can use lots of different batteries; not just the Panasonic ones.
Awesome video! May I ask what the size (mm) of the DC cable was for the VMount set up? It seems the standard 5.5 x 2.5 DC cable doesn’t adapt, Love the vids!
@@MichaelTroyOwen That's brilliant! I wish it was simpler though lol. Would love to power the camera with my V-Mount Batteries instead
@@choowy87 good to know, I’ve gotten to the point where I’m going to try soldering the connector to a dtap. But for the time being I just bit the bullet and ordered a couple batteries. Had to sacrifice a few meals for it but it’s worth it, lol!
@@MichaelTroyOwen I haven't yet! So far I have just been powering my BGH1 with a SWIT, but hopefully can figure it out soon!
Sorry to revive an old post, did you ever figure this out?
SWIT S-8D58 + FXLION NANO ONE Battery - at the same time ?
@@photojoseph can we use both camera's back battery and V-Mount battery at the same time
I don’t know what the question is
What is that wire called at 2:22? The wire from the Swit to the monitor. Thanks in advance.
That’s a simple DC cable. On Amazon you can find cables that go from DC to DC, and it’s just a case of finding the right size. Some hardware makes it easy to find, some don’t. Google “DC port sizes” and you’ll see what I mean; there’s an outer and inner measurement, for example: [Type B: 6.0 mm OD, 2.1 mm ID] that’s “outer” and “inner” diameter.
Very helpful 👍 I'm buying this cube
Awesome! I love love love mine!
Hey! I know I'm commenting on a video you posted a year ago, but I'm only just now considering purchasing the BGH1. Anyways I'm in need of the battery and was considering the Swit. My only concern is that BHPhoto mentions that it's incompatible with the BGH1??? They do so in the Q&A section. Anyways I just wanted your confirmation that the swit would perform well and not damage the BGH1 if I were to purchase this instead of the Panasonic ones.
@@photojoseph thanks so much! Literally your comments just saved me like $200. Omg thank you again and happy holidays
@@willfilmsstudio155 pretty sure this is the one I use. https://amzn.to/3AIjoJU
Hey again! I ultimately decided to go with the native Panasonic batteries, I got them used so it's not a total loss.

Anyways the Panasonic charger is seemingly way overpriced at $219 (i wish it came included in the package).

Do you have any alternative charging suggestions?
Weird; I use the SWIT all the time!
Thank you so much for this video. I like the form factor of the camera. Now that’s a setup I can work with
Thank for the great video!

I want to build a stereoscopic rig with 2x BGH1. How should I genlock two cameras? Do I need an additional device or I can plug the SDI cable from one camera to another?

Could you please cover this topic because there's no information at all about it...
wondering if you have experienced any audio ringing in headphones when you also power your monitor from the same battery? I have a Portkeys LH5P powered through the same battery as the BGH1 and I get a high pitched ringing in my headphones when I connect to the camera headphones port. Audio is also going through the HDMI output and shutting that off doesn't fix the issue. Now there is no ringing tone that is transferred to the actual footage audio, but it's annoying nonetheless in my headphones. Have you experienced this and if so, are there any fixes?
is it possible to attach CAME-TV Crystal V Wireless Full HD Video Transmission System to wooden battery plate for bgh1?
Those are questions for those companies
Iam still looking for second hand Panasonic BGH1 accessories, so if you have some or any gadget you want to get lid of lets talk offline
Please what is the cable you using to power the camera on the external battery ? Do you know a cable like this Dc (lumix camera) to dTap ?
@@tiffany2539 I think this is it but I’m traveling so can’t verify: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1493127-REG
@@photojoseph Can you post a link? I cant find the right cable to fit in the bgh1 power port to my nano battery.
thanks,
I had an ATOMOS D-tap to DC cable but there are third party ones too.
Where I can Find a power cable to connect ninja V to the Swit Battery?
Hey PhotoJoseph. Quick question, does the BGH1 require handshake with the battery for proper operation? I purchased a GyroVu battery plate to DTAP adapter and there is a message saying that it does not support cameras that require handshake but I cant not find any information about it. Thanks mate :-)
Not that I’ve heard of. What is the cable you’re using? I think it’s more likely to be a cable problem.
Looks really cool. If only I could afford a BGH1. I'd probably add a chest mount that attaches to the rods at the back.
Can I charge the Batterie in camera ? Great review
No. The batteries need to be externally charged.
How long will the SWIT S-8D58 power both monitor and camera for?
I want to say that we had about 90 minutes with intermittent shooting but it may have been more. It’s hard to judge without critical tests; amount of recording, brightness of monitor, etc all contribute.
r u using Netgear 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet PoE+ for power the bgh1(bs1h)?
It’s Netgear but it’s 26 port. Needed ports for other gear, plus had to make sure it delivered sufficient power for all the devices I connected. https://amzn.to/3BMu88M
love the setup
Thanks Hung! Me too… so fun to build out cameras like this
After watching your videos on the BGH1 here and on the Lumix channel I purchased one, but when I open the tether software and click Live view the screen that opens covers the control panel to be able to adjust the iris, shutter, WB etc. I cannot move the tether software control panel as it stays stuck in the middle of the screen. On the videos you made for Lumix I see the control panel sitting nicely next to the Live view screen. Please explain how to set the screens up properly for ease of operation, thanks
Sounds like a Windows problem, TBH. I can move all mine on Mac and PC no problem.
@@photojoseph I am using Windows on a Dell Laptop. I tried it on my desktop and I can move the window but I cannot on the laptop. I can only move the live view window but not the control panel window to set the camera settings. Very strange
Windows or Mac? They’re just floating windows like any other, but I have had troubles moving them sometimes. Tell me what OS please!
@PhotoJoseph What exactly did you attach the FXLion Nano One to? I would like to make sure I get the v mount plate that is capable of connecting to both the ninja v and bgh1. Thanks in advance.
The V Mount adapter is from Wooden Camera, just like the cage.
nice video, however powering a screen via the same power source such as the battery with a DC out could burn the HDMI output of the camera, i think its also possible by the vmount option. there are ways to avoid but a lot of people frying there camera's this way unfortunately.
@@photojoseph Sorry i commented a URL to an article written by Arri, but somehow didnt end up here, maybe youtube doesn't allow urls.. i will dm you on instagram the link :)
Sorry I don’t understand what you mean. And considering batteries like the V-Mount are specifically designed for this — a single battery to power lots of devices — I’m going to need some hard info please.
@@photojoseph This is the same got HDMI* not only SDI
I haven’t heard of this… how does this burn the HDMI output? Like, two contacts on a battery coming in contact with each other? It doesn’t really make sense but I’d very much like to know more.
Oh no... This makes the choice between GH5II and BGH1 even harder. Both would be cool for my work in addition to my GH5. I know it's too early but i hope to see a BGH2 with the new features of the GH5II
Obviously it depends on your needs, but I bought several BGH1 bodies for my work. I love this camera!
Thanks for the video. You are the best explainer.
Thank you!
Hey there @PhotoJoseph, would you happen to know if the 12v input can take the 16v peak of a non-regulated V-mount, or do we need to add in regulation to 12v to not fry anything?
There are specs in the manual — they say the DC in is rated from 11.4V to 12.6V. The cable should be regulated, and must be, but of course you should check with Wooden to be 100% sure.
@@photojoseph the manual sadly just warns to only use their power adapter and doesn’t provide any specs. If you can find out if that was a regulated cable or the plate output (wouldn’t be to standard Lemo 2-pin spec however if the port was), that would be amazing to know!
Sounds like something a manual would say. I will see if I can find out what that cable was; it was on loan very briefly, just for that video.
@@photojoseph technically according to the manual it says use nothing but their supplied power supply into that port. So I feel like getting an honest answer is a bit more difficult. Most v-mounts send the native voltage and just have current regulation to prevent overdraw.

I noticed you used the cable from the Wooden Camera plate into yours here, do you know if that is a 12v regulated output?
ooh, that is not a question I know the answer to. I'm afraid you'll need to reach out to tech support for that one (assuming of course it's not in the manual). The camera itself just says 12V on the input. Perhaps it regulates it though, if it's common for V-Mount batteries to have unregulated outputs?
Thanks for that Video, please am searching for a remote cable for BGH1 to Ninja V, to give me control of the BGH1 on Ninja V screen, any advice sir?
There is one solution I know of for controlling the camera, although it's a bit temperamental. I haven't done a video on it because it's not ready for prime time, although I'm hoping it gets better with firmware updates, and that's the Portkeys BM5WR. I don't even know if it's a fully shipping product, to be honest. What I have may be a prototype. That model is listed on amazon, but doesn't talk about the BGH1.
@@photojoseph Oh! Really! That's a bummer. Thanks for the quick response as always it's much appreciated sir.
you can't control the BGH1 from the Ninja screen, unfortunately
