PhotoJoseph used to be a (as he calls it) “Full Frame Snob”. A friend of his let him borrow some of his cameras, and amongst them was a micro four thirds Olympus camera…and after playing with it, Joseph was converted.

I've had a lot of comments about the grain and wanted to address that, plus add something that I realize I never discussed. First, the grain was an aesthetic choice I made. I added grain to every image to make it more grungy and analog, which was quite the opposite of what everyone else was doing. This was also 2013, the early years of Instagram when any "old film look" was cool. And I was well rewarded… my images consistently got the most likes of the group. However there's one more point I hadn't mentioned that in retrospect is quite important. In this video we are looking at the images on a large screen and I will agree that many are overly grainy. However these were edited, and delivered, on an iPhone screen. Think about that; the amount of grain seen on a large screen scales down with everything else and if he grain isn't pronounced, becomes invisible. I didn't have to worry about editing on a big screen to deliver on a small; I did both on a small screen. Which means that I added the grain that I felt I wanted for that size. Blown up to a big computer screen, yeah, they are overly grainy. Look at them in an iPhone though and it's a different story.
I hope that helps clear things up, and informs the grain haters why they look the way they do.
In the end… Mercedes-Benz loved them, the audience loved them, and we grew the account over 100k people to push past the half million mark in the week we had the control of it. And that's what matters.

+JUZ TRAILERZ As far as I know it works just fine. Smaller and less powerful than the Panasonic but it does seem to work. I'll eventually do a review on these but not anytime soon. I think it's a safe buy.
PhotoJoseph Hi, awesome video instant sub. After some research, I bought myself a Lumix GX7 used about a month ago with a 12-35mm 2.8 version one. Love that little thing, I've taken some great pictures with it even in low light. I'm not a pro photographer just a hobbiest who wanted to take better pics than with the cellphone. Though I feel the need to buy a flash to up my game. I've been looking into flashes that work with my camera and came across the godox tt350o. It claims to work with olympus and panasonic but I have not yet found a video review of the unit. I've seen reviews of the tt350s which is the version for sony cameras. Am impressed with the performance of it. Do you know anything about this flash. I dont wanna spend the money just to find out it doesn't work. Thanks.

Neither, those were just regular mounted prints
I was at the Canon booth in CES, asking questions on indoor sports shooting, I had bought their best camera at the time. After a while the sales rep said, “ put it on P and press the Fing button.” That is Canon service !

coming back to this video in 2020, i think i'm finally going to make my switch to m43. thoughts on the olympus pen-f for portraits and street?
maybe a 75mm ? what would you say is a good go to camera for portraits in the m43 line up?

The Pen F is interchangeable lens, right? So, that depend on the lens.

The Pen has always been a great choice for street photography.
I love my gh5, use it for everything!
Nice! M43 delivers in so many ways. I'd love to see a blind test showing images from all sensor sizes. Anyway, it's nice to hear your M43 origin story.

Maybe others have mentioned this before but: Your videos are too long. I'm sure you'd get a lot more viewers and subscribers if your videos were 10minutes maximum. Use editing and a pre-written script to synthesize every topic and idea discussed. Jump cuts are actually encouraged in Youtube videos and reviews.

EDIT: Make sure to study your videos in Youtube Analytics. You'll have all kinds of info there; from the age of your viewers, to their location. One important thing to watch out for is the amount of the video viewers actually watched...Youtube will tell you if they watched the whole thing, or skipped forward because they got bored, or the video was too long. Videos that get watched from start to finish with no skipping, will usually get suggested a lot more by Youtube's algorithm.
This channel has a lot of potential to grow and you're a pretty great at doing these videos. You have character and a very unique way of talking and expressing yourself. Read a bit about how Youtube works, and watch videos made by other Youtubers on how to grow your channel. There are some incredible tips out there, and the Youtubers that have followed them have exploded in a short amount of time (pure luck) or have continued to grow slowly but progressively. Keep up the great work, and I wish you lots of luck and success :)

Most of my new videos are considerably shorter. But considering this one is one of my most watched videos ever, I’m gonna call this rambling one a success. I do more than provide information; I tell a story.
I have been shooting 4/3 and m43 for many years(from e-500 to Pen F), I always want to try full frame but m43 always satisfy me, finally, switched to Sony full frame last year, more heavy and less beautiful photos shots, probably will back to m3/4 when E-M5 iii released, full frame has a great advantage that m3/4 can’t archive, that’s pixel peeping, if you don’t pixel peeping, m3/4 is everything you needed.

Keep up the Great work.... Your channel is a breath of fresh air. I too use to be a FULL FRAME snob. I still have my Sony Cameras but I find that for 95% percent of my work Micro-Four third Cameras are MORE than enough!

That was years ago… even when I recorded this I’d already switched to LUMIX. I’m now a LUMIX ambassador and use G9, GH5, GH5S and S1
At video 12:25 about the top down shot, not only about the tilting LCD but the great M43 stabilisation to hold the camera one handed when a FF DSLR in the same situation would have blurred the shot from hand movement ...
I guess your clients enjoy lots of grain. I've had several Mft cameras as well, and indeed they do some things very nicely. However with time I'm now more enthralled with cameras that can shoot at ISO12,800 and look like it was shot at ISO400. The new Panasonic S1 full frame is one I'm going to be trying which from all reviews appears to be the winner thus far.
Im looking ro get into photography. I am a total newbie and i would like to focus on nature and wildlife also some landscape. How are micro 4/3 for these areas? Want to stay under $600 to start any suggestions. I was looking at olympus omd 10 mark 2 any suggestuons would be appreciated. I want to stay as small and light weight as possible for going on hikes.
At that price point buy used. You'll get much better gear for the money. And remember that the lens is more important than the body, and they age better too (meaning you can buy an old lens no problem as long as it isn't scratched)
Dslrs are very inconvenient to use and ugly looking as well

I am just a guy who loves taking photo's and I have to say for the price and what is packed into the body... the GX85 rocks like no other (opinion).

I don't know why this Feb '17 video popped up on my main YouTube page now (probably because I'm viewing lots of M43 vids), but it's really helpful. Hopefully you are still all-in on Four Thirds cameras and posting stuff about the newer products like the G9. Anyway, good job and I like how you can talk to a camera and feel like you are talking to me as we have a beer together.

Photo hobbyists are excited by release of series of "full-frame" mirrorless camera by various makers.
I think they are excited by it because they haven't had opportunity to own full frame DSLR.
On the other hand, sales of DSLR in general is in constant decline.
I think the camera makers are in desperate effort to save the high end market so they decided that It's the "mirrorless" part that will save the market(prices aren't that much different from full frame DSLR).
I think the high end non-professional will eventually come to the same conclusion that pros had come to and will eventually switch to smaller mirrorless, (MFT and APS-C alike).
In other words, full frame will cater to very small market, much the same way as medium format and large format do today.

I got the D750 with Nikkor 20mm f1.8!at f4 or higher you actually need a tripod for most pictures unless its in full sunlight!the in body stabilization is pretty cool and nice to look at on various Olympus OM-D cameras!Getting the OM-D E-M 10iii in april/march for video since the D750 got bad autofocus and not very nice options filming settings!
I shoot weddings with a 5mp point and shoot from 10 years ago (with a scratched lens). The clients love my pictures! DSLRs are useless.
Hi, I’m looking for they smallest micro 4/3 camera, Panasonic has. I came across the Panasonic gm 1 and 5 but can seem to only find them on eBay in the international versions plus I would like the the camera to have image stabilization, and 4K brush mode. Which Panasonic would you recommend?

PhotoJoseph sorry, I meant 4K photo burst mode. I’m not much into video, I’m more into photography, and I love the 4K photo burst mode in my Panasonic zs100. I’m looking for a slightly larger sensor that is still very compact.
“4K brush mode”? If you mean video, then check out the GX85. It has everything you want (and is still my favorite travel camera)

THANKS. I'm very impressed that you used four thirds cameras on commercial work. In a couple years I will retire and I want to freelance doing commercial photography. My camera kit is two Nikon crop sensor cameras with several lenses. I do not want to invest in full frame cameras--too expensive. I will consider four thirds for video. I heard four thirds have a lot of features for video. I like the savings on both crop sensor and four thirds cameras.

With respect, it isn't like asking a mechanic what type of wrench they use. If a client asked me what equipment I used, I'd just tell them. But hey we're all different. And I'm not a pro photographer..... not good enough probably.

It’s exactly like that. The problem is (following your analogy), many customers believe that one brand wrench will make their car run better than another, instead of worrying about the mechanic ;-)

Great story! I think M43 is kind of dying out now that Fuji is so big, but they're still nearly the same thing. I just love how much you can do with this small mirrorless cameras! My biggest problem with M43 is there's no camera with all manual controls like Fuji's. Olympus WAY overcomplicated their retro bodies and it's really sad, they look so good else than that

+GraphX Shop I’m honestly not familiar enough with the OMD. I know it’s a great camera, no doubt, but I couldn’t tell you how it compares, sorry.
Joseph I’m really interested in the Panasonic G85 for video can you tell me anything You think I might need to know vs The Gh4 or GH5 video wise?
+Mychal Simmons GH are pro series cameras, with things like true 24p, variable frame rate (slo motion) recording, unlimited recording time (not sure if the G85 has that or not), and in the case of the GH5, 4K60p with 10-bit and 422 400Mbit options, and a superior sensor and processor combination.
So glad I found someone who is a pro and switch to the micro 4/3 system. I recently bought the em1 mark ii because I believe to will suit my needs better then the others. But I have my dad on the other hand which he thinks that the I need to have a full frame, I just think he's not ready for the change and how powerful something so small can beat his canon 7d mark i

GH5 has a flip out screen, for sure. It's exactly the same style as the OMD. LUMIX also has dual image stabilization (in-body plus in-lens). Any like with Panasonic, anything you hear about the Olympus mk 3 is probably speculation. I will tell you that going to 8K is likely not technically possible with a micro four thirds sensor, at least not if you want any low light performance at all. Just something to think about! But again, either way, both fantastic cameras. Good luck and enjoy!

Sweet! That's a great camera… I'm obliged to tell you to take a close look at the LUMIX GH5 as well, but there's no doubt that the EM1 is a fantastic camera.
Great video! Ever since I got my Olympus I have not shot with anything since. The technology of these new m43 cameras seem to be so underrated.
As a general rule the smaller the image sensor the smaller the lens and the camera body. The micro 4/3 image sensor is much bigger than one inch sensor and not very much smaller than an APS-C sensor.
The micro 4/3 cameras of Olympus/ Panasonic are quite small and they have affordable with great quality lenses. Of course a full frame camera is essential for any serious photographer but when size and weight is an issue then micro 4/3 is the best solution.

Very interesting, I have been using M4/3 with video Panasonic AGAF101E & am very happy plus its very easy to switch lenses for various types with easy to find adaptors...Thanks from Cannes France.
