Photo Moment - July 17, 2017

Joseph is on the road today, but since it is Monday, why not answer a viewer's question? Eliocometto asked (through Instagram), “Hi joseph! I follow your work and I always see your videos on YouTube and I really love it! So.. I would like to buy my first mirrorless camera mainly for photo and I saw the GX80/GX85.. do you think it is the best choice at that price? 😉

Joseph - Just Ordered a lumix gx85 I really would like to know the best Lens for Cruises, low light and nature shots photo, video. I'm retired so affordable would be great???
there is no “best” lens, just depends on how you like to shoot. I’m partial to the 15mm f/1.7 https://geni.us/3KtyCz
Recent GX85 convert question: is it possible to have both the screen and the EVF normally off, and have just the EVF come on as a function of eye proximity? After going through the details manual on PDF, it doesn't seem like this is an option, even though it makes sense from a battery life management pov. Heading over to Lynda to check out your course!

Edit: hmmm, no gx85 course on Lynda :-(
I have the GX85 and love it. I'm taking it on a trip to South Africa which includes a safari. Is the Lumix 100-300 mk II too heavy for the GX85?
Nice! Weight of the lens doesn’t matter to the body. Don’t hold the body and let the lens just hang off it if you can avoid it but that lens isn’t terribly heavy anyway. Enjoy your trip!
The 25mm Leica 1.4 is super good as an every day + indoor lens. I got that as my first GX85 lens. My next lenses will likely be the 75mm 1.8 and some wide angle - maybe the Leica 8-18?
@2:35 Suprised to hear this, since there are many positive reviews of the 20mm 1.7 on the interwebz, and despite the slow AF issue, I count it as one of the best in my native lens collection!
+PhotoJoseph May I ask you how good GX80/GX85 with legacy manual lenses like 50/55mm Canon or Nikon? Are focus peaking working with this or other manual lenses? Thank you!
+otantsura You know what… I'm honestly not sure how focal length of a full frame lens translates on an MFT body with a speed booster or any other adapter. Is 50mm still 50mm? I don't know! However the 50mm focal length (in full frame equivalent) is a little wide for portraits. Usually 80, 90, 100mm is preferred.
+PhotoJoseph thank you for your answer. What do you think in general about 50/55/58mm manual lenses on m43 cameras? Are they good enough for portrait shooting with GX80/GX85 or G80/G85?
+otantsura Focus peaking works with any lens. I rely on it heavily when using my Zhongyi 25/0.95 lens. I haven't used any Canon glass on my LUMIX Cameras but focus peaking would certainly work.
Your comments make me want to reevaluate the GX85. When I first used it I was impressed because it was the first Panasonic MFT camera to feature 5 axis IBIS, and the lack of AA filter made the images really crisp. However, I could never get over the fact that the GX85 EVF is horrific, and I'm definitely a "camera to eye" shooter. Now I'm seeing videos where guys have opened up the Cinelike profiles on this camera. Might be worth revisiting it, and trying some arms-length compositions.
+Lyndon Smith Give it a try… I love mine!
Loving the mobile live streaming from where ever you are :-)
+apntv Thanks!
I think the 12-32 is very good, especially wide open. May be time for a reevaluation?
+jon bilson Do you? Maybe I should then!
Great video. Can you share how you are live-streaming?
+Church of the Harvest Thanks. This is the Mevo from livestream. It's awesome!
Question: I'm buying the GH5 and am still searching for the perfect first lens. I'm looking at the 12-35mm f2.8 ii but am a little worried about the low-light capabilities for wedding receptions etc... Is there a better versatile option for apurture without going the metabones route? Thanks! Love your videos and am thinking about doing your training course for the GH5!
+Tyler Penrod The 12-35 and 35-100 are the fastest zooms. If you want faster, go primes. The 15/1.7, Zhongyi 25/0.95 and 42.5/1.2 are my selects.
Tyler Penrod I have the 12-35, really all lenses on a mft will suffer at low light, depending on how low. You can snag a prime (I think photojoseph uses the Mitakon Zhongyi Speedmaster 25mm f/0.95?) With good aperture to help out.. you can YouTube mft gh5 low light and lenses to learn what sort of output you will get. Can also talk to a local camera store to rent the lens before buying to give it a test run
Hay Man Do you know When the New Summer GH5 Freeware update is Coming Thanks
PhotoJoseph thanks for the reply
+FRANK R ICE COLD That sounds like a Neewer issue to me. No updates on the firmware update.
