Aperture doesn’t support editing referenced files that are “offline”. Offline meaning the drive they are on is disconnected or missing for some reason.
It’s all about the originals and where they are located.
Managed: Originals are inside the library package. They get backed up in any Vault.
Referenced: Originals are outside the library package. They are stored wherever the user chooses. Can be on the same drive as the library package or a different one or even spread over multiple drives. They don’t get backed up in a Vault.
