There are always maintenance things like disk Utilities check permissions and then Permissions repair when you start aperture by holding option + Command. Then Repair lib and Rebuild by opening the same way. Check out other maintenance items in the FAQ sec on this site and report back.

Do you have “Share XML with other applications” enabled? If so, have you tried disabling that to see if closing Aperture is faster?
