I'm calling a mulligan… the first attempt at this was a total screwup, but now I know why… so let's do this focus stacking thing right!!

I thought with the gh5 and gh6 you could set a start focus point (which you could) and an end focus point (which you don't seem it be able to do).
That is so cool! Thanks for this great video. Still very useful even today.
Hmmm- you did a nice description of focus bracketing, but the subjects- the glossy skulls were not the best thing to show variations in focus. I would have liked to seen objects with textures that could more easily be seen in & out of focus.
Have you compared the Post Focus with Focus Bracketing and what difference did you see?
focus bracketing, IIRC, still shoots RAW files, while post focus is essentially a movie file (think of it like a series of JPEGs). If you want to produce the final result in-camera, use Post Focus. If you're more interested in manipulating it in photoshop later, use Focus Bracketing.
Thanks for the redo. I was looking for a tutorial for focus bracketing with the G9, and this works. I'll use Helicon Focus because it usually is better than Photoshop's merge for stack processing.

I had a play around with this for about half the day and got some good results. I have a couple of questions though. Can you import the stack file to your PC and fiddle with the file in Panasonic software. I have not downloaded the Panasonic software so not sure what it can do.
Also I took a lot of stacks but only looked at them at the end of the day. I also took some normal shots as as well of the same subjects. The problem is sometimes I cannot tell which is the stacked image. Is there any way to tell a stacked image from a normal image? EXIF data maybe? Looks like some of the normal shots I took had enough depth of field to make it hard to tell them from the stacked images in some cases.
since we can pick individual focus squares for a ranged stack I hope the GH5 has more or smaller squares to select from compared to the G85 to give better fine tuning.
Going to play around a bit more tomorrow.

+Mark Laurendet I've never played with the Panasonic software. No EXIF data AFAIK that tells you it was part of a sequence. Look at the time stamp; that's probably best indicator. GH5 does have more focus areas; 255.
thanks , I especially liked the part about masking the white skull. I would like to see a comparison of the Photoshop stacked image versus the in camera stacked image. obviously Photoshop probably does a better job , but it'd be nice to know the differences

FuzeDzn@PhotoJoseph Post Focus does work on the app however you cannot change the focus point from the phone. Same for the 6k Photo Mode, it can be used on the App but you cannot go through the frames

FuzeDzn@PhotoJoseph Post Focus does work on the app however you cannot change the focus point from the phone. Same for the 6k Photo Mode, it can be used on the App but you cannot go through the frames

Hi, was wathching live. I asked a question about the new sensor 'upgrde' (read out) of the GH5 and I think it was taken the wrong way;/ I was only wondering, as someone who owns a GH4 and never shot with a full frame, if you felt the GH5 new sensor's improved read out usage bridges a bit of the gap between full frame (APS-C for video) and M43s. I was wondering what would happen if you applied a speedbooster (for video) to this scenario - would we approach near full frame? Thats all... sorry if it came out wrong, I think its just another selling point for the GH5.
