I remember discovering your channel when the GH5 launched. I was one of the first to receive it (besides reviewers), almost two weeks before the European release date, and I ended up having an important shoot two weeks from receiving it. You have always astonished me with your consummate knowledge, humorous and pragmatic presentation, and excellent organization of information. A few years later, I'm still using that camera, and I'm still referring to your channel to educate myself. Thank you.
@@hudsonshires6141 GH5 is still solid, for sure!
@@photojoseph It's tempting! I think I'll probably wait for a bit. To be honest, as long as I can control my lighting conditions, the GH5 still produces quality content (I've recently switched to recording to an Atomos recorder, so I get the 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2). Low-light will always be a trickier situation with it, and I'm not sure if the GH6 will dramatically improve on that. I was in the airport the other day and got to talking with the lady at check-in about my work and showed her some samples and she was blown away by the video quality. Made me think, "Hmmm, looks like she doesn't think I need to upgrade yet!" Regardless, I'll watch your GH6 videos. :)
Aw thanks mate, that’s really awesome to hear! So is there a GH6 in your future?
Like the way you explain it. To the noob like me is easy to understand. Got the gh5mkii today
Awesome, merry Christmas!
Sweet ! great tips !
Hi Joseph. Thanks for your great videos and for your enthusiastic instruction. I have the GH5 with all the firmware updates. I cant get the camera to work in pinpoint mode. In fact I cant get the icon to highlight when i press fn3. Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong please. And of course if anyone else has a solution I would be delighted to hear it.
Robin
Hi Robin. I have same issue. I think if use manual focus, but are using auto to "punch in" you can't use pinpoint. I use area focus and just make it as small as possible and it works for me.
I’m late to party on getting the Gh5, but I love finding great videos like this on getting more out of the features of this camera. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome! And if you want to get the most from it… GH5training.com
I'm late to the party as usual but thought it'd be helpful for G9 owners to know that most of the customization ability shown here is also available on the G9! Still practicing... long way to go, sigh.
BTW, many GH5 vids are very germane to the G9, especially since the Nov '19 2.0 firmware upgrade. Again, Joseph, many thanks for your paring down my still steep learning curve. Keep 'em coming please.
You are 100% correct… many of these GH5 features are on the G9 now. I’d go as far as saying that if you have a G9, my GH5 training will be extremely helpful. If you haven’t already, check it out at GH5training.com and enjoy your awesome camera!
Thank You
👍
GH5: Still the best All-round camera in the world.. But with 20 Fn functions how can you remember which button is assigned to what ? :-)
Through use! Honestly this is one of MY biggest challenges, because I have so many cameras (I know, I can hear you all crying for me), and I use them for different things, that my Fn buttons are all different (not to mention that they all have different layouts). But whenever I pick up a camera, it takes me a few to remember what buttons I set and where. To check what any hardware Fn button is, just press and hold it for a few seconds, and the option to change it will come up, which of course will show you what it does (handy if pressing it doesn't do anything, like maybe turning focus peaking on/off but you're in an AF mode so nothing happens)
Super video, thanks :)
Thank you for your video.I learned a lot I purchased a GH5 about five months . I wish it had a built-in flash. Richard in Dallas. Texas.
that's cool! :) and you are so funny ))
didnt know that... thank you
almost passed out on the dial function buttons, great tip!
We're having problems with the SD cards we got SanDisk x pro 170s and it quit on our shoot luckily we got the shot but not enough of it.
OMG, how do I not know about these tips before! Thank you!
Yay! Happy to help.
Bracketing tip- genius!
You literally saved my life - Thank you! Great channel =)
He was about to be killed then he told the guy that you were about to upload a video, they sat down together, watched the video and lived happily ever after. 🤗🤗🤗
Literally? I want to hear that story!!
The ad for the S1 is hilarious! It demonstrates - once again - why the GH5 (was that used to make the ad?) is so poor at autofocus. The Presenter is OOF! Please dump the AF system, Panansonic, it makes a great camera less than great. But the S1 looks interesting...
LOL now that's funny
Seems to have gone now. Possibly put there by Nikon, Sony or Canon... :)
I don't see it but there are many LUMIX channels. Send a link and I'll find it in blocked messaged and release it. Thanks.
It's an ad for the S1 with a guy in Rome standing in front of a famous pile of stones. The pile is in focus but sadly not him!
Ouch. What ad are you taking about? I haven't seen it.
Wow, this is an old video but I can't believe how much I didn't know about my Gh5. That Holding FN to change it's function is amazing! Thank you Joseph
I found it out by accident one day when holding a button down too long. Or just long enough depending on how you look at it.
Glad to hear you learned something new! If you liked this, then you’ll learn a lot more from my GH5 training. Not to give you the hard sell, but I’m gonna do it anyway ;-) Check out http://GH5training.com — it’s 5½ hours of in depth GH5 training, and you will definitely learn a LOT from that. Enjoy!
Still not finding the color profiles at lightroom... everything on latest versions. Could anybody help please?
@@photojoseph Hi mate! Lightroom classic, GH5 RAW. There is no profile select on camera calibration just "process".
Lightroom Classic or CC? And you're shooting RAW right?
Insanely gr8 tips, just got myself a new GH5, so these tips are very useful indeed, I am shocked how easy the settings are to use unlike the SONY which is way harder to set up, I know more in 2 days about My GH5 then I do about my SONY 6300. LOL
Amazing tips and tricks.
Thanks! Be sure to check out my full trying then at https://GH5Training.com
Hey PhotoJoseph, whereabouts are you located? I see your picture of Shasta, I am from Redding originally
Ashland, Oregon
What they're complaining about is that in selfie configuration the image on the preview screen is flipped left-to-right. This is a design choice by Panasonic. The actual image being recorded will be correctly displayed as left on the left and right on the right. To prove, this, hold up some text with the screen flipped forward and you'll see it's backwards. But look at the recorded image or video after the fact and the text will read correctly.
Hello and thanks very much !!
I dont clear undesrtand the program P with vídeo mode. And Why i cant see información in display of shuter or diafragm with this program P , when i shoot vídeo ?
Thanks again
And them is a simply automatic?
Is like press the red button when the camera is on photo mode?
Sorry for my english Im from Spain
It just doesn’t show you the exposure decisions it’s making. I wish it did but it does not. If you’re in P mode, you’re just letting the camera decide. Sorry.
Sr. , Please, i just bought GH5s and notice when I select VFR my AF doesn't work.. why?
because AF doesn’t work in VFR
Hey! I am using the lens that comes with the GH5, and when I turn the lens stabilization on, I get about 20 minutes tops of batt life. Is this typical, and is there any way around this? I love the feature, but the batt drain is horrific.
Let me know what you come up with
PhotoJoseph You’re the man! Thanks so much.
Whoah no way. Sounds like a bad battery or an issue with the camera. Do a full reset (in the camera menus) and test again. If it still happens, call Panasonic.
When I press the +/- button on top my GH5s it does nothing. I don't get anything coming up on the screen I have my camera set to M on the top dial
love your channel. THANK YOU!
Amazing!!! I was digging into menues but I hadn't seen most of the tips you mentioned! Thank you so much.
PD: you speak so quick but I can understand you perfectly although English isn't my mother language.
+Pablo Maresca 🙏
Hey Man! Love these vids, thank you for your service to us all. Questionnnnn....at 21:00 you talk about setting your back wheel to adjust the over and under exposure....how do you do that? Thx!
Thanks so much for the reply.....I'm tying to do that and under the dial set menu, it only gives me the option for front dial, back dial, and off...but not wheel setting like a Canon would be. =) I'm in C Custom wrench menu, operation, dial set.....thanks for any other help !
Menu > Custom > Dial Set > Exposure Comp. I just recorded that for my GH5training.com course ;-)
Is it possible to record video with the display show inside the view finder on the Panasonic GH5?
+Ei Forc no
My GH5 also has this upside-selfie problem. I won't ever take selfies with it, so I'm not returning it.
Every camera company should have someone like you!
+Jim Horn 😁
had it for 3 days. returned it. the image fell apart too much in low light. noise is even visible at ISO 3200
u are an idiot
@PhotoJoseph - I recently picked up a GH5. If I put a recorded video clip (MP4 LPCM) into Premiere CC it looks like the first 5 frames do not have any audio. The audio comes on after the 5th frame. Any idea why this happens? My friend has this problem too on his GH5. Help appreciated!
+Life With An R3 You know what, this happened on the GH4 as well. I guess I just got used to it. I have no idea why. I should ask!
I am noticing this too! First 5 frames no audio.
@Aloha Joseph...do you have a video discussing your recommended set-ups for the GH5? Also, a video dedicated to the still characteristics of the GH5? Mahalo (thank you) & I enjoy your presentations!
+MiniGP 2013 Working on both; stay tuned
Just watched this, excellent show as ever; both 'press-and-hold on Function buttons to reconfigure' and 'pressing in on the rear dial to bring exposure comp also shows bracketing' works on GX80 as well! Did that make sense? I hope so!
Hey Joseph whats up? Are you having crashing with your editing system when importing the gh5's 422 10 bit footage? Alot of folks are. Im a long time gh user and downloaded gh5 footage to try out in anticipation of upgrading from my gh4 to gh5. On import it crashes premiere and after effects immediately...
Mine too.
I'm having a strange issue where my GH5 lags. The camera sometimes will take a couple of minutes before I can hit record, but then when I do hit record, it won't always record right away, it'll sometimes take a good 30 seconds before it does. I thought maybe I didn't press down on the record button hard enough because the picture is still moving on the screen. So I press it again, and it'll do a quick jerky lag where it'll record and stop record. After I record something, I'll try to play it back and it'll literally freeze, sometimes indefinitely until I turn it off. When I do turn it off, the "lumix" screen pops up and stays there for a good few minutes before actually turning it off. I assumed it was the memory card (I use lexar 1000x 128gb 150mbs) but then when I stick the memory card into my sony a7s2, there are no problems with the card at all. Now the weird thing is, this is completely random and happens every other time I turn on the camera, so one time everything will function normally but other times, it lags like this. I used it last night in a shoot for the first time, and it cost me a few shots cause I was lagging so badly and I missed the action. I'd be staring at frozen screens trying to hit record. When my client asked to play it back and watch it, it froze. Any ideas? Do you think it's a defective unit or maybe there is something I'm missing?
I tried my G85 with the screen pointed to the front and it also flips the image upside down when tilted, but this does not happen when tilted and viewed from the rear.
This looks like a bug to me, maybe firmware fix. But I do not take selfies so no problem to me.

When I found out about that easy way to change button functions on the G85 (proabably from here) it was a mixed blessing. Great that it was (is) so easy, but also disapointed as the only button I may change is Fn #4 for the trash can since I use the touch screen. Panasonic nailed the buttons to such a good extent that I do not have to chance them. With the customisable quick menu and "C" presets I find the buttons do exactly what I want.

I hope that rotary dial on the GH5 is worth sacrificing the 4 way switch like on the G85 as I really like it and with the icons as I forget what they do sometimes. The G85 is the best camera I have ever owned for ergonomics. But I suppose the same people designed the GH5 so it will be as good. Looking forward to seeing one in store soon.

Here 2 very good videos on AF, who resemble Max's tests with totally differet, very positive, results.
The outside test shows all the footage he took, none left out, nothing edited:

Here the lens test:

Another good AF video.

Maybe Max had a faulty body.
Thanks! I realize why I originally bought the GH4 over Sony.... IT'S USABLE! The GH5 takes it to another level. Wow. The buttons an menu layout is great. and infinitely customizable. Lightroom! Finally! Cool.

Yes, there are bugs, a bunch of stuff needs to be fixed. But consider how many bugs are in major release of Windows or Mac OS, you need to wait until x.2 or x.3 if you want everything to work

SO, here's a BUG I noticed. The .mp4 file generated by Post Focus 6K won't play in FCPX or Quicktime or PS. But, it will play in VLC. The only way I could get it into FCPX was to run it threw Handbrake using "same as source" and .MP4. So if you don't image stack in camera, it's a ROYAL PAIN to do in outside of camera. Hopefully Panasonic is aware of this, and a fix is in the next firmware update. It's some kind of transcoding issue new with 6K. My GH4 has no problem.
I went to Patreon to throw a tip in the jar but discovered that you have to sign up monthly. As a new viewer of your videos I'm not sure I'm ready to do that. But if I could make a one-time donation I'd be happy to do that.
Thanks, fakecubed, I didn't know about Super Chat before.
+fakecubed Thank you fakedcubed! David… what he said ;-)
If you catch his show live, you can tip him through YouTube with the "Super Chat" function. You can also support his channel with his affiliate links. The nice thing about YouTube though is you can go look at all his old videos and see what sorts of things he covers and perhaps most importantly how consistent he is with doing the show. Might help you decide whether or not to support him each month.
Again a great episode with great tips.😀
@PhotoJoseph Thank you for responding to my LiveChat ? in the pre-show.
Another great photo moment thank you Joseph.
I have a question here Joseph regarding my babe (The GH5) why when I'm in Movie mode (Rec)(Stabilizer)(Focal length set) I can't manually set the lens focal length unless I take the lens off the body. Is this a normal behavior?
FYI I'm using the Panasonic 25mm f1.7

Thanks a ton
didn't know you teaching on lynda.I'm already a member for awhile.
Oh, man!!!
This trick of long push the Fn buttons is A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!!!!
Gear ergonomics - it sometimes that drops cameramen away from getting the right and perfect shot... And there is the sample where developers are DEFINITELY did A LOT of awesome things and "re-thought", "slept over" with many key tasks & features which almost every modern camera has but almost none of its users can reach 'em right away in a spontaneous flashy moment of time when even a 5 secons DOES MATTER... We all know that everything comes into place when we talk about a professional applications...
Thank you again for your job, Joseph! Get well soon! And God Bless You!
Fuji nailed these types of autofocus settings with the XT2. Much more intuitive and works.
