I have gh4 and I cant change MF to AFC mode even with the switch button.. Plesa help me :( if I do update firmware to 2.5 can I fix it ?
+BunuBiYAP That's not an issue that was ever in a firmware fix. Ensure the lens doesn't have a manual focus switch that's enabled, and then do a camera reset.
Hi Joseph, when shooting in M the GH5 has a very annoying quirk: if ISO is set to Auto the EVmeter is replaced by a fixed +/- icon that never changes, even when you select a wrong SS /F combo that might be outside the ISO range. The only hint you are going to shoot a bad photo is the red color of SS/F values when shutter is half pressed. Other mirrorless cameras ie Oly OM1 mark2 has the EV meter always active even in autoiso as it should be. What do you think?
PhotoJoseph ok, thanks. The easiest way is to set camera in M mode with iso auto. Then either open wide in a bright light with long SS or close aperture in dim lit with short SS so to force camera to operate outside automatic exposure adjusting capability. You will notice that GH5 still shows the assuring +/-0 sign whereas the shot is going to be completely dark or white!
+Roberto Targa Oh right, you sent a very detailed response I need to look at with camera in hand.
Hi Joseph,
a week ago I asked your advice about a possible feature request regarding the GH5 exposure control when camera takes control of one or more parameters (e.g. M with ISO auto). It's correct that the camera shows the +/-0 icon until it can adjust the exposure, but when the light situation is outside camera adjusting capability GH5 should show the EV meter, so to warn user that he/she must take some action to bring camera inside the correct exposure range, i.e. opening/closing aperture or increasing/reducing SS. Doesn't it make sense?
(BTW Olympus OM1 mark2 operates in the very same way I'm suggesting)
The situation That I deem annoying is that the EVmeter is hidden and replaced with a fixed +/- 0 icon every time the camera has at least one parameter to manage automatically ( M mode with ISO Auto or in S mode). It's ok until you are within the camera exposure range, but if you are outside it will be preferable to have the EVmeter active again so to be warned you are not in a safe situation, without being obliged to half press the shutter and check for the red or white color of SS/F values. There is no reason to hide/show the EV meter because it will constantly display +/-0 until camera is able to modify the managed parameter to keep exposure perfect and will display the under/over exposure when it's outside the operating range. Don't you think it will be an easier and more proactive way of interacting with the camera than anxiously checking for the color of the exposure values before taking the shot?
+Roberto Targa Hm, if you're in M but auto ISO, then as long as you're within ISO Range, it's impossible to have an improperly exposed photo. The +/– icon there is your exposure compensation (override) which you'd have to push the +/– button to change. What am I missing?
I'm going to be using my GH5 with my Nikon G series lens and Metabones Speedbooster XL 0.64. Where do I find the "shoot without lens" setting you mentioned in this video ? Also if I use a zoom lens like my Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 via Metabones adapter so also manual lens what would you recommend setting the "current focal length setting" question that appears when I turn the GH5 on ? Should I set to the lowest ( 30.7mm with Adapter) or highest ( 89.6mm with adapter) or somewhere in the middle ? Thanks
@PhotoJoseph A feature request: make it possible to assign ISO or audio input levels to the rear rotating dial which currently does nothing in recording mode.
Yes -- I don't mean top dials but the one at the back that's used to navigate menues as well as flipping through images in view mode.
+zee ninetynine Are you referring to GH5?
Hi Joseph
Which of the Panasonic lenses would you recommend for general gimbal use on the GH5, I just git the Ziyoun Crane. Thanks man :)
+EzzenzDK Whatever focal length you need… no specific gimbal+lens combo recommendation. Max used the 42.5mm Nocticron on his tests when we were together and he's done more since then but I still haven't watched to see what lens he used.
@photojoseph. What would you say to iphonedo about his rant on the gh5. Do you think Max would agree with you or iphonedo?
Here's his link to the video...

Hey Photojoesph!

what lens are you using on to shoot your youtube and what af setting do you have? I am on the GX-8 with a 25mm 2.5 lens. It works fine but at times during a youtube take, I notice it would pulse while im sitting and talking to the camera. I have it Af-c. I just wonder if upgrading to GH5 would correct some of these pulsing. Gx8 is hitting its age.

Thanks~
I just went to try it out, mind blown. WTh.... Sometimes the most simplest thing can be over looked. Much much appreciated. I am embarrassed. You the man Joseph!
+Li-Chung Chih haha you're welcome
That never cross my mind! Holy crap. LOL!! Ive been running and gunning and totally forgot if Im just sitting down, leave it at manual. Let me try this out!

Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated!
+Li-Chung Chih Why be AF at all? If you're sitting, go manual. I use the 12-35/2.8
@PhotoJoseph Not a feature request, but an information request. Is there any more detail available as to what functionality we might get from tethered shooting in the Summer f/w upgrade? Will it just be stills? will it be video? will we be able to use the camera as a webcam? Will it potentially even be able to push raw video data given the 10Gbps of available bandwidth?
+Kevin Wright No updates available, sorry.
Do you still need to shut off image stabilization when using on a tripod with these newer camera's? If yes, is that just for photos or for video as well?
Hey @PhotoJoseph, Monoprice has a dirt cheap 4K HDMI scaler that you can use to upscale your iPad to 4K. I don't know if it would help you in your Retina quest, but it's Monoprice PID 14599 (currently $18.59). I guess you would also need a 4K HDMI-SDI converter since your ATEM doesn't have enough HDMI inputs, but maybe you have some of those laying around.
+Quentin Smith Wow! I'll check that out, thanks!
I noticed in the comments on David Thorpe's G85 Battery Grip Review he thinks the CAF on the GH5 is OK. Looking forward to his review.
Hi Joseph,

I've been shooting test video at different frame rates (using VFR) and my recording is set at 1080p/25. I've now imported those videos into Premiere but cannot determine which shots were taken at 100fps, 150fps, 180fps etc. Is this possible?

Keep up the great video content.
Hi Joseph,

I've searched for this question online but havn't come up with much, hopefully you'll be able to test it or have some idea!

I'm taking my GH5 hiking with me and power conservation will be VERY important. I'll have the battery grip and spare batteries but I want to do everything I can to conserve battery life.

I'm looking into getting a decent quality condenser microphone and hooking it up to the GH5 XLR adapter.

I have two concerns...

1. How much additional power draw would the XLR adaptor alone add to the GH5 with a condenser microphone attached that has inbuilt batteries, eg. rode ntg4+

2.How much addition power draw would there be with the XLR adapter and a microphone that relies on phantom power from the camera, eg Sennheiser MKH416.

Thanks in advanced for a response!
Thanks for this Q&A series, not aware of anyone else doing this sort of thing, very helpfull and interesting.
My feature request: bulb ramping for timelapse mode!
Hey Joseph, please do a review on the new pentax k1, I thank you in advance
I think photojoseph is a Panasonic guy. Try Leehaze or thecameraville . They do primarily pentax .
Hi Joseph,Thank you for your helpful videos on the Gh5.
Is there any remote focus, zoom or lanc type attachments or ability for the GH5, that can be use on the Ronin M or gimbal other than a mounting a wifi table to the ronin m for remote manual focus pulls?
What would your suggestion on this, so that we don't have to rely on the auto focus, for solo gimbal work.
I like the new format. Easier to skip to the exact topic you're interested in.
Hi Joseph, don't remember which video I watch. GH5 autofocus slows down when you hook it up to an external monitor.
My intent is to put GH5 to a gimbal and HDMI out to a wireless transmitter to a live switcher.
Giday Joseph I am pretty sure the Boya BY-WM8 Dual Channel wireless system balances the channels in the receiver although I could be wrong. I do hope you get the chance to check this system out as I am in interested in buying it but would like to get your input. Kind Regards John
V60 and V90 are just a classification. Many U3 Cards WILL be in the V60 range. The manufacturer simply didn't pay for the that classification test to be performed.
Thanks for going through my suggestions. Slight correction - I have a dual mono lavalier microphone that is wired (not wireless) so there is no electronic (besides the power circuit with a small LR44 battery) that would be able to balance the levels of the left and right channel. I'll look for some pass-through stereo balancer/attenuator, but having that feature in-camera would be much handier for lightweight setups. It could easily be implemented in software (if the internal pre-amp circuitry supports that, of course).

As for using the record/play button as a custom button, the reason why I've asked about that was the fact, that the function behind that button is listed among the assignable to custom functions, which implies that someone may want to assign that function to some other custom function. But in that case the existing record/play button should be available for some other function. This is about consistency.
Thanks for the breakout! It's often hard to find the one answer among 20 others is an hour long video. I hope you will keep doing this.
Ok dear ,Now GH5 is with me ,I have only the problem with 10 bit 4:2:2.the footage is not showing my Mac sierra OS ,pls give some tips .
