GH5 6K Photo Mode; Extracting Frames on Desktop and In-Camera (UPDATED)

Photo Moment - April 18, 2017

I answered a viewer's question the other day on how to best extract frames on the desktop from the H.265 “6K Photo” video files created by the GH5, but have an updated, better answer for you today!

Also I show you how to do this on the camera itself, in case you're wondering.

INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU CAN'T LAUNCH ROCKYMOUNTAINS CONVERTER ON YOUR MAC:

===============

Here is the workaround to get the Rocky Mountain to launch

1) Right click on RMMovieConverter.app,  show package contents
2) Navigate to Contents/MacOS/node-webkit – double click the node-webkit
It should open at this point.

3) if it does not come up then type this…

export EVENT_NOKQUEUE=1

…in the terminal and hit enter and double click node-webkit again

Hi there. What's the best way in 2023? Photoshop imports the GH5's 6K mp4s without a problem now. Have you noticed any loss of quality? What I don't understand is that exporting the GH5 as a jpg gives me a file of 5184x3456 pixels and Photoshop indicates 180 ppi, whereas if I export an image from the video using Photoshop I get 5184x3456 pixels at 72 ppi.
@@photojoseph Thank you for your reply and the quality of your work. I don't need to print, it's still digital but I don't understand the difference. I'm looking for the best way to use these 6K photos and I haven't found a better way than exporting them as jpg files with maximum quality from the mp4 in Photoshop and then re-opening this jpg in Photoshop. Saving as a tiff is unfortunately not a solution as far as I know, because it's the video that's exported and not the image. And the rendering function limits the resolution to 5000 pixels. But it's still usable.
probably still the best way, and PPI is irrelevant. All that matters is pixels. PPI is only important when you print; how many dots/pixels of your image do you want spread out over one inch?
does anyone know this problem? while using the 6K photo when I press the shutter button the monitor turns black. is there a way to not turn black? and still see the footage?
02/2020 UPDATE for macOS Catalina:
TL;DR 🥱

ISSUES WITH RMMovieConverter.app using MacOS Catalina 10.15.3
Explanation and Possible Fix:
RMMovieConverter.app is currently unsupported by Apple in macOS Catalina/Mohave. The developer of the app has stopped updating it for some time now and it has been abandoned. At the time of this comment. QuickTime Player now supports H.265 & will open the 6K file (.MP4) but, that's about it. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop should allow you to import them. If you have done the following: Go into System Preferences>Security and Privacy, click the Privacy tab at the top, then on the left column click "Accessibility", then hit the '+' in the middle to add Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Colorsync Utility, Digital Color Meter and Disc Utility (May also require clicking 🔓 and then entering your password. Repeat this by going back to the left column and selecting 'Full Disc Access' and 'Files and Folders' and adding the Adobe apps. NEXT, go to Application>RMMovieConverter.app and right click then select 'Get Info' and at the bottom, under 'Sharing and Permissions' make sure your Administrator and your device login ID 'Privilege' is set to 'Read and Write" repeat for Adobe Apps. That may fix that part. If it STILL won't open...try my workarounds below.
The reason RMMovieConverter won't open is all due to an update in the way that Gatekeeper malware security program in your Mac works on macOS Catalina. These features bring added functionality, more ease of use, and improved security.

One of the ways macOS Catalina boosts user security is by preventing unknown apps from running on the device. As such, Macs and MacBooks running on the latest macOS version won't allow users to launch just about any app they want; apps should be sourced from the App Store or should come from Apple-approved developers, which will have Developer IDs. Apple's logic here is very simple: by preventing the use of unknown apps, users will be protected from malicious software. Those who try to launch an unknown app by double-clicking on it will be greeted with a warning that says the app “can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software.” It's pretty straightforward. So your device is looking for the “notarization” of the app. It’s effectively a certificate of good standing that is obtained by the developer uploading their app to Apple to check for malicious code which is then stapled to the app. It’s one step further than having an app signed with a developer cert. "Beginning in macOS 10.14.5, software signed with a new Developer ID certificate and all new or updated kernel extensions must be notarized to run. Beginning in macOS 10.15, all software built after June 1, 2019, and distributed with Developer ID must be notarized." ( https://developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode/notarizing_macos_software_before_distribution ) This is for your device security. The node-webkit file is the culprit because it is supposed to execute by opening the app, but because in not only doesn't have an Apple developer ID, certificate of who developed it and now with macOS Catalina a 'notarized' Apple developer certificate it won't open. So basically if what I'm about to show you next doesn't work. YOU'RE HOSED IF YOU HAVE A MAC! (Like me!)

Possible Workaround #1🤞🏽 : If you're comfortable with the command line aka Terminal on your Mac ( I'm a software engineer & I have a MacBook Pro Late-2018) open your Terminal app (CMD + space bar>type "terminal.app" and then hit return OR go to Finder>Applications>Terminal.app, double-click) in the command-line type (double-quotes included) the following:
chmod +x "/Applications/RMMovieConverter.app/Contents/MacOS/node-webkit"
Ex: $ chmod +x "/Applications/RMMovieConverter.app/Contents/MacOS/node-webkit" and hit the return key. Close the terminal and then double-click the RMMovieConverter.app. It should open. If not go to #2.

Workaround #2 🥴 : Go back to the terminal/command-line and type(no quotes) the following: "xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/RMMovieConverter.app/Contents.MacOS/node-webkit '''
Ex: $ xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/RMMovieConverter.app/Contents.MacOS/node-webkit and hit the return key. Close the terminal and then double-click the RMMovieConverter.app. It should open. If not, I don't have a solution just yet. I'll keep you posted or someone will give another solution. 🤓
Hi, I need help extracting the frames form my g7 (4k photo) can you help? Any recommended software for a mac user

Isn’t that exactly what this video is about?
People watch your videos in the middle of editing. I'd recommend you cut the trial & error and get right to the solution. Should be waaaay shorter.
PhotoJoseph thanks so much for the reply and tutorials!
Newer shows are edited. You have to understand when I first started YouTubing I didn’t have the time to edit every show. Pretty hard to spend your whole day on something when you have just a few subs and make virtually no money. Everyone starts at zero.
Hey Joseph, First off, THANK you for you help in this video as I was able to figure out how to capture a picture off video on the camera with this video! SO THANK YOU!

I hope you can help me. I have used a Lumix camera for years for video for my youtube channel. I noticed the older my camera got, I could hear a grinding noise in the background of my videos. I thought perhaps it was just because the sound card was getting old. I purchased a new Lumix dc-FZ80 and the video blurs in and out on every video and I am still having a grinding noise on my videos. I have a youtube channel, and nearly every video I have taken in the last four months using that camera has blur into focus, then out of focus. Do you know if it is specifically a problem with the lower end Lumix? I never had a problem with the video blurring like that on my old Lumix so I wonder if it is a setting I am not using right on the newer camera? I also wonder if you have ever had someone comment on the grinding noise in the background. I could link you to some video on my channel for examples if you think you may be able to help. I would appreciate any help you can give as being a single mom, I don't have expendable money to purchase another new camera and I have really loved my Lumix. Recently I have just been using my cell phone and computer for videos due to the blurring issues. This is sad as the camera is only six months old but I am so frustrated I want to send it back but don't think that is an option now. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Have a Blessed Day!
Thank you so much for getting back to me.
Here is a link to a video where at the beginning, you can hear the grinding. If there is talking, you can't hear the grinding as much, but when it is quiet, you can hear the grinding. This has happened on all three of my lumix cameras. I have had the smaller lumix camera but don't remember the model. The larger DMC - FZ18. I just purchased the DCM-FZ - 80. If you go back from this video, most videos between July and November 2018 (except me sitting at the table) are from this camera and at some point go blurry in the video. I started using my computer at the table as the quality is so much better than what I am getting with the Lumix.

Here is another with the same grinding and blurring.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8FbRgYrDjs
As far as settings go, I am just using the auto focus which is what I have used on all of the cameras. Can you even manually focus videos?
Thank you again for your help.
Post a link so I can see and hear what you mean. The focus is probably the autofocus getting confused (depending on what you're doing, using manual focus may be better) and I've never heard of the grinding sounds. Tell me how your audio is set up and also what models of gear you're using are.
What has better quality? Export on the camera or on the desktop?
Doesn’t matter. Either way you’re just extracting a frame from the stream.
You can also import your burst video file into FCPX and edit it from there. Once you are done, you hit share and save current frame. It works very well.
I have Mohave installed. That is where I the did the frame extraction. You select the still you want, erase the rest, and edit your photo just like you would any other still.
Have you tried it under Mohave yet? I havne’t
Hi Joseph and others. I am trying to copy my footage back from my computer onto the SD-card to be able to extract in the GH5. However the camera keeps saying 'no valid picture play' after copying. Do you have any advice?
Thanks a lot for answering :)
I had the same proble and it is because I was not using the same folder structure. You have to put it under DCIM & PANA
Are you putting it in the same folder structure? I would recommend you shoot another clip, then put that card into the computer and copy the file back to the same location, and make sure the naming structure is the same too.
For windows 10 i use the standard photoapp that comes with windows 10. It can view the 6k/4k files and very easily extract individual frames. Works fast and better than photofunstudio. (which is no fun at all to use ;) )
This is a pretty old video so I think software has updated quite a bit since then. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the explanation and links.
The GH5 with the 2.3 firmware no longer has the same interface as what you show. In fact I cannot view any frames at all since although there is a different interface with different icons, I end up with a menu that asks if I want to upload to WiFi. Possibly I need to turn some WiFi function off. In any case the manual is of zero help.
If you use Final Cut Pro X, you can just import the 6K file into it and create a project with the custom 4992 x 3744 resolution. Skipping through the frames, you can go to "File > Share > ..." and select Save current frame as TIFF or Photoshop File. Or you can "Export Image Sequence". I must say that I made some comparisons using the Kaleidoscope app and found that the jpg's that I extracted in the camera itself looked a little better than the tiff's I got from using external video players or editors.
That's actually kind of genius for someone uses FCP, THX!
The down side of Final Cut Pro by the way is the enormous file size! The same picture in png (which is the only output of PreCut Pro) is 115MB FCP X vs 37MB of PreCut Pro.
Hi Joseph. Yes I noticed the video is 11 months old, but as I was still unable to find a player that smoothly played my files, I thought I would just put an idea in for other people to work with. As far as the remark about jpg's from the camera itself vs external software is concerned: I WAS WRONG!!! Must have accidentally switched things around .... I just bought the PreCut Pro Kerry was talking about and started comparing everything again.... The files extracted on the computer seem to have more dynamic range.
So sorry for this confusion.
Probably sharpening being applied in-camera. BTW this video pre-dates a version of macOS and FCPX that supports HEVC by 6–9 months.
I think when you take the 6k photo in the gh5. You go into your playback and select the photo you want by scrolling through the roll and save it within the GH5 itself. It will automatically save the picture as 6k resolution jpeg onto the SD Card That should save you this entire process of having to use hand brake. Found this tutorial here. https://youtu.be/xLi5caUIuBU?t=8m5s
Correct. I showed that in this video. Using handbrake was about doing it on the desktop.
Wow! Very Helpful, Joseph, Thank you!
I use preCut pro to export frames at 4K. Latest version supports 5K and 8K etc. Find on Apple App Store for $14.99. Very useful! Search preCut pro
+Kerry Kesner Awesome, thanks for the tip!
Can you extract a 6K raw sequence from this ? Or it is always processing images?
+Jonathan Ninnin Its not RAW. You're recording an MPEG5 (HVEC) video file and e reacting stills from that.
Hi Joseph, I was easily able to run the program and drag the videos from a hard drive into the app, and put in the presets, but then when I click Process to change my MPEG-4 movies it gives me a red error message. However, when dragging the videos from my Desktop it processes them fine. Unfortunately I normally have so much footage that I rarely would drag anything from my desktop. Any way around this that you know of?
why is it called 6k when its not even close to 6k resolution.
Good gracious, that's incredible technology; Im considering buying the GH5 for this and other reasons, but wonder if any other quantum leaps of technology are just around the corner?
+Mark Berry That's one nice thing about Panasonic; they aren't in the habit of releasing major updates back to back, rendering your recent purchase obsolete. I think your purchase is safe.
i get this message (“RMMovieConverter” can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer.) and can't access the RMMovieConverter file
See my update to comments in this section.
HI,
why not use "Free video to JPG converter". it is dead-easy, works in Window and open source as well!!!!!!!
Hi Joseph. Can you please let us know all the autofocus setting you have used for the snow board 6k photo capture. I am trying 6k with birds, and as it flys, the focus goes away and I am getting blurred image with focus in background. Can you please suggest the best autofocus setting for that. Many thanks
+Umesh Kathad Manual :-) Focus at the distance you need and set an aperture to cover the range. Focus peaking helps tremendously here.
MPEG Streamclip is another open source app that will transcode anything to anything. Have seen it in a lot of postproduction houses and was using it to transcode 10bit footage from the GH5 until yesterday! Stopped working along with the updated Premiere with those clips.
For all MS users you can use Klites Media Player Classic codec pack. No conversion needed just press Alt+i and you can save the image you like. Works great for me
@photojoseph awesome video, as usual I now feel like an expert !
Could you show the best way to setup the GH5 to take photos like the snowboarder series please.
That was just 6K photo mode, aperture priority and probably f/5.6 or so so I had some depth of field.
Great explanation of the 6K photo functions of the GH5. I understand more how it all works now. Lets see if we ever get to use it in our work :)
Handbrake works for me. I mentioned this a couple of weeks ago in the forums but I suspected it wasn't a high visibility item. Preset - Legacy, High Profile, RF 0 (lossless), Encoder Level 5.2. The rest is automatic. The file doesn't play smoothly in VLC but it does in Premiere PC.
Hm that didn't work for me. Are you able to export a preset and send that to me?
For those, who knows what a command line interface is: ffmpeg does support H.265 and allows extracting frames as individual images of any format supported. No recoding is needed.
Thanks for doing the legwork. Lack of H.265 support helped kill the Samsung NX1. Let's hope other software/operating systems support it. And then other camera companies can use it.
