OK folks, an update on the battery swap. I have confirmed both with Panasonic and by testing this myself. This is with the GH5 set to use the BG (battery grip) battery as the priority battery (meaning it uses it first).
1. If you remove the battery in the BG (battery grip) while the GH5 is being powered from the BG, the camera will power cycle. This is expected behavior.
2. If you are recording a video and the battery in the BG runs out, the camera will seamlessly transfer to the internal batter, and NOT interrupt recording.
3. Once that happens, it's safe to remove the depleted BG battery, and replace it with a fresh one. When you do, even while recording, the camera will seamlessly switch BACK to the BG battery.
Hope that answers the questions I didn't have the answers to live!

Ok, no problem. So the key is.....Set to use BG first, let the battery in the BG run out while recording (DON'T remove it before that), it will seamlessly swap to the body battery, then you remove and replace the BG battery with a fully charged battery and the camera will seamlessly swap back to the BG battery. Rinse and repeat as much as needed :-)
+Real World Endo I haven't watched the old video to see what happened then but I asked someone at Panasonic to try the same thing (removing BG battery while the camera is on) on both an upgraded and non-upgraded body, and the same thing happened (it power cycled). So, if I said it didn't before, I was wrong. If in my old unboxing video it worked without power cycling, then that's something we need to look into.
Wait a minute, that doesn't make any sense. Power recycle means that it will turn off and back on. Are you saying that if we want to switch the battery in the Grip while the camera is recording we have to manually switch to the body in the camera menu before removing the battery and then switch back to the BG once you've changed the battery? You said this was not the case before the firmware update. Did Panasonic change with the update?!

Hello Mr. Joseph. So with long form recording, where you know you may run out of battery with just one battery. Should I set the camera to prioritize the grip then internal or internal then grip so that the switch doesn't cut recording?

I just got my hands on a GH4, I have never done any photography, so this will be my first camera. I purchased off ebay, came with a lens (Lumix G Vario 1:3.5-5.6 / 14-42 ASPH@46 Mega OIS), two batteries, a charger, and of course the body, and vlog already unlocked. Seeing this, I ordered the powergrip for $60 because why not, it will give me a place to stick the second battery haha :) I was very interested in the XLR1 as an additional accessory, but alas, it does not work with the GH4. I am interested in purchasing a nice all around lens, but I have no idea what to look for. While I listed the specs for the lens coming with the camera, I have no idea what any of it means, other than the "Lumix G Vario". My plan is to photograph nature, nothing dramatic (I'll leave that to BBC Earth), but things like plant life, beautiful insects (butterflies, moths), weather, natural water bodies and so forth and then to take my already existing craft of writing orchestral music to pair to the cinematography and photos.

Is it a bug or not?
Its been almost 3 years and still if you take out battery or external power - camera resets. And you loose your video footage. Any workaround / bugfix / information from Panasonic about this problem?

How are you calling this a bug? You are literally yanking the power out of the camera while it's writing to disk. Think about unplugging a computer while a file is being saved — how would you expect the computer to save the file without any power? This is the same. If you simply unplug the power or pull out the batter while it's shooting, yeah, you'll end up with a corrupted file. If the battery dies that is different — the camera knows it's going to run out of power so shuts down safely and finishes writing the at the last possible moment. But if you just pull the power out — yeah, you're going to have a corrupted file. This is NOT a bug. This is expected behavior from any electronics.

Thanks a lot from this video and update on the battery swap test, Once I know it can record unlimited time and no need to shut down to change BG battery,I bought it immediately , before I buy it I always need to worry about when will it runs out of battery , and should I change battery earlier to avoid record interrupt during the live idol show ,now I can completely use all the battery power in BG.
Does the battery grip have any effect on weather proofing? does it compromise the camera's weather guarding?

You'd have to ask them… but I'd imagine keeping it lighter is more desirable.
About the battery grip. 1 battery in the camera and 2 batteries in the battery grip? So in total 3 batteries right ?

+Gordon Tovell I can't compare to the Canon (no experience with it) but I can say I've always been pleased with GH battery life.
I haven't used that one. I'm still using a Canon T2i and wanting to upgrade soon here because I'm at a level where I need better equipment and better low light conditions which I can see from youtube videos online that it does a great job. And the fact the canon charges way too much for their lens is another reason I'm wanting to switch to the GH5
+Gordon Tovell No simple measurement because it depends on SO many factors (shooting intervals, previewing shots, frame rate shot at, WiFi/Bluetooth use, sleep patterns, IBIS, etc.). But it's seems pretty universally agreed that the GH5 battery lasts a long time, and 2x batteries is 2x time. If you've used the GH4, it's a little LESS because of increased battery requirements.

I have watched numerous videos from you and while I have been thinking of getting a GH5 almost since the day of release, I finally pulled the trigger yesterday and picked one up with a 12-60 and the vlog software (how bizarre this item is shipped ONLY in that strange soft rubber pouch with a hand taped keycode...wtf?). Right out of the box completely un-setup, the pictures are jaw dropping. The sticker shock is rapidly going away. I just ordered the training series direct from you and look forward to learning everything I can about this powerhouse... aaaaaaand subscribed.

@PhotoJoseph CACTUS V6 II is a flash trigger and Cactus say it works with Panasonic and HSS. The will release a wireless TTL firmware upgrade for Panasonic/Olympus later in the year.http://flashhavoc.com/cactus-x-ttl-for-v6-ii-announced/

According to PocketWizard only the GH4 is officiellt supported by their FlexTT5 for Panasonic as of now. People in forums has used it with the GH5. If you're going for a FkexTT5 be sure that you have the right frequency for your county.
The V6 II works with different branded flashes FlexTT5 only with Panasonic flashes as of now.
Cactus has not verified their triggers to work with GH4 and GH5 yet.

swapping the battery in the grip indeed doesn't seamlessly change the power source to the in body battery. However, this - probably bug - may be prevented when you first let camera switch the power source when the grip battery has drained down and the camera automatically switches to the in body battery. When you only then swap the battery in the battery grip, it will be interesting to know what happens then.

Reference your remark about your Shure earbuds - I took a small yellow post-it note and wrapped it around one of the cables leading to my right ear. To make sure it is secured, I wrapped it with clear scotch tape a few times. When putting them on I look down at the cable and know that one is for my right ear because it is thicker. I can put it on in dark arenas with no problems.

Ordered a grip about a month ago and still waiting for it to arrive at my local camera shop. But I find the GH5s a lot better to hold than the GH4s
Can you tell us more about how to plug into external power?
+Sou Lee Uh, right… crap. Well ok, not mid record. But you could still continue shooting after a reboot. Yeah that's thin… problem is, I had it in my head that you could remove the battery and therefore had all these advantages of that planned out. I discovered last second that that didn't actually work, which really messed with my plans of what to tell you. Apparently, that "advantage" was still in my brain pan when I started talking. Guess I didn't flush the cache :-)
PhotoJoseph so you told us in the beginning the benefit of using a external power with battery grip is for in case power goes out..but you then showed us if you take the battery out of the battery grip, the camera turns off and power cycles to switch to the camera battery! So it wouldn't help if the power goes off.
