Q&A: Front vs Rear Curtain Sync and Electronic vs Mechanical Shutter

Photo Moment - May 15, 2017

John Schwaller asked “I understand the three different shutter types: mechanical, front curtain, and electronic.  However, it is not clearly described in the manual when you would choose each, other than for silence or faster speed or flash.  Also, when and why would you choose 'auto'.

On prior models, I believe that there was a problem with shutter shock in a range of shutter speeds, so selecting electronic or auto for those speeds would help that.  I thought the GH5 solved much of that, but…??”

There’s 2 shutters, not one that opens and closes like a garage door. If that was the case then, assuming the speed of door is constant, the garage floor would be exposed to light far longer than the roof of the garage. This would cause the bottom of every image to be horribly overexposed while the top of the image would be black.
That is correct. I did this video a very long time ago so don’t recall how I explained it but yes, there are two.
10:33,Sir most likely you don't do any high magnification, ( Repro/duplication ),macro photography at 1:1,2:0,3:0 life size or more ?
I'm talking about digitizing or scanning objects like post stamps, coins, film, small prints, important artifacts.
Electronic First Shutter Curtain makes a big difference.Mirror lock-up is not enough, there are vibration from mechanical shutter at slow shutter speed.
At those magnifications I even have really hard time just to bring object in proper focus and I'm using expensive "Kaiser" repro stand.
I would also use Electronic First Shutter Curtain mode for landscapes with tripod, whenever possible.
Why would shutter shock be a problem on these cameras and not on film cameras? I vaguely remember it could happen at very slow shutter speeds under certain conditions. But I remember shutters being dampened in some way as they got faster.

Does the shutter travel vertically, as you demonstrated with your hands?

As a Luminary, will you be going to NAB in April 2018? I mean, where you'll be presenting or available for chatting?
Shutter shock can happen but these cameras will automatically switch to electronic shutter to avoid it at this particular shutter speed combos. Vertical, yes. And I will be at NAB but probably not on the Panasonic booth. Stay tuned to the channel and I’ll talk about it more as we get closer.
Lol Lol LOl "Look!! I see shutter shock! this camera sucks!!" LOL LOL Some people are crazy Joseph.... lol.
no comment 😋
can we do rear curtain sync with a flash that's off camera?
I'm pretty sure you can… don't see why not. I haven't tried though and can't test it in time for today's show but if you have the gear and can't get it to work, let me know. If you're just asking out of curiosity (ie you don't own the gear) again let me know and I can test it out.
Gh4 had shutter shock. G85 was supposed to solve it with its new shutter. Does it exist with mechanical shutter on GH5...could you ask Panasonic and find the range where it may occur. (Suspect, as you have said, you don't do much still shooting).
My understanding it it's been minimized but still in auto mode it avoids that range.
My question was not on second curtain flash, which, I believe is a setting under flash settings. It was about "electronic first curtain", see p. 217 of manual. When do you use each....and what does "auto" provide. This is important, I believe, for shutter shock.
Will you announce you reply. I would hate to miss it as I do not listen to all parts of YouTube sessions.
PhotoJoseph I understand why you may have been confused as I believe electronic first curtain is new, for Panasonic, on the gh5. Understanding when best to use it and other shutter modes would be helpful. Also benefits of auto mode....and when it is best NOT to use it would be helpful. Panasonic could have been helpful with more info in manual.
Ah. Too bad that wasn't clear in the original question. I will see what I can learn.
