This is not a genuine fluid head. I’ve had 2 units replaced under warranty. Compared to my E image GH04 sadly this fluid head comes a distant second. I do not like the plate locking mechanism either. Also the GH04 is less than half the price of the N8. Please take the time to do a serious comparison of this head with many others at half its price which are genuine fluid head. The nitrogen filled piston is just a sales gimmick! It is really sad that many many reviewers use the expression “Buttery smooth” with scant regard for what the term actually means. Buttery smooth in this context would mean “exactly the same resistance to movement at the start and right to completion of the said movement and I can assure you the N8 doesn’t deliver this in both the pan & tilt axis. When you come across a professional who services and repairs these N8 units and he tells you they are crap and describes in great detail why he thinks that is so you will quickly learn to respect his professional opinion.
@@prabhakarrao4922 I’m actually in the market for a new video tripod. I’ll check that out.
@@photojoseph yup I take absolutely no pleasure in telling everyone that not only was my first purchase a lemon so was the 2 replacement units. The E-Image GH04 is extremely smooth and most importantly I really like it’s consistency / repeatability. This is a very important attribute of a good fluid head. A fluid head has a chamber with fluid in it that flows through opposing plates (one design). That is why you will notice they have a cylindrical body in the center. Now the N8 does not have that. It relies on the rolling movement of a cylindrical pin along a highly polished flat surface with a grease packed resistance plate on the left hand side (looking from the back). This design leads to jerkiness at start and stop. The pan movement is through plates rubbing against each other ( you can hear this rubbing noise when panning). When you release the lock on the tilt axis you can hear a slurpy sound of packed grease stretching between plates.
Don’t know what to tell you… I thought it was great. Sorry you don’t like yours
Hi Joseph, can you please add a link to the tripod you are unboxing in the video ? I would really appreciate that ! Thank you. That is a beast ! 😁
Thanks for the view review. The release system is a bit funky, but I suppose you can get used to it over time. Speaking of time, now that you've had this video head for a while, how do you like it? Has it held up, performs well and met your expectations? The pan/tilt arm is the same design as my crappy Manfrotto 502, which gets chewed up over time and binds inside the tightening attachment. I've replaced it twice, and Manfrotto was VERY hard to deal with. The 502 has terrible ergonomics, but once set up performs pretty well. The 502 doesn't have a proper counter balance, so it doesn't hold well with some loads. I'm thinking the Nitrotech will be a big improvement with its adjustable counter balance.
Unfortunately I don’t have it any more; this was on short term loan for review from B&H. I didn’t want to send it back but couldn’t justify the cost for my own needs. So, I can’t talk to it’s long term performance :( That said if you do decide to buy it based on my recommendation, please use my B&H link below — they send products for me to review for free in hopes folks will buy from them! Thanks 🙏🏻
What half ball adapter is that?
Oh got it. This came as a kit, and it was on loan from B&H and it went back ages ago, so I can’t check, sorry
PhotoJoseph I know, when you buy sticks and a head separately, in this instance, the N8 is a flat base and the sticks are a 75mm bowl. So there is a half ball adapter that attaches to the base of the N8 head that allows it to sit in the bowl of the sticks. In this case you bought it as a complete tripod system so it wouldn’t specify that necessarily, but curious if there’s a model number on it or not
Not sure what you’re referring to… this video is about the tripod and head named in the title and description. Do you mean something else in the video?
20 mins on an unboxing video and doesn’t know how the main feature (counter balance) works. The mind boggles
+Jim Elliott Sorry to disappoint you.
PhotoJoseph just saying if I had bought something, I’d probably know what it does and roughly how it works before it arrived at my door - certainly before I made a video about it. Even if I was paid to receive it and unbox it by a company I’d learn what it does first before making a video. Absolutely anyone can receive a random box and just point and stuff and go ‘yeah don’t really know what this does’. Just a tip, as it’s quite frustrating to watch
+Jim Elliott Well… its an *unboxing*. Never seen the product before. This was my first tripod like this. So… yeah. I didn’t know how it worked (yet).
like manfrotto gear myself have three of their tripods now
The knob up front is a counterbalance adjustment. Will be hard to demonstrate with a GX85. By adjusting the front knob with a fully kitted DSLR or Cinema camera, it comes into play when the vertical drag is set low and keeps the rig from abruptly flopping forward or back.
Yep, that's what some of the audience said. I've read the manual now and see how to do it. I'll get a bigger camera on there and do some proper testing!
Jesus Joseph and Manny. Experiment in your own time.
+Richard Parrington It's called an unboxing. Kind of hard to experiment before it's unboxed, no?
