Configuring Epiphan Webcaster X2 for YouTube & Facebook, and the Beta USB Camera Support

Photo Moment - August 15, 2017

Wondering how to configure the Epiphan Webcaster X2? PhotoJoseph will take you through how to do it for both YouTube and for Facebook. Joseph is on the road for his vacation, (or in the air, depending on when you see this), so we are coming to you pre-recorded today. Sorry to those who enjoy the live show.

“TWO CONFIRMATIONS from epiphan:
1) the audio only comes in via HDMI, so if you switch to USB, you’re still using audio on HDMI.
2) Facebook scheduled events are not (yet) supported.”
Very different product. You can’t do all the lower thirds, effects, and more sources on the X2 that you can with OBS. But this is a small, stand-alone hardware streamer. The quality is probably better but I haven’t compared. It’s definitely a lot easier to use.
Plz share the address of authentic vendor.
Regards
Epiphan stopped making this device unfortunately
Is there a way to stream with multiple sites at once at the same time (like stream IG, FB and YouTube at once)
Yes, by streaming to a restream service like restream.io — however this hardware is now obsolete and no longer made.
Great video, I learned so much. I had no clue what a video encoder was till this video.
In my Webcaster x2, in preferences I do not have multisource item. I connected my camera to usb port and I checked the box on Enable USB camera(Beta) but there are no configuration as multisource as you teach. How can I have those menu?
Habe das Teil probiert und muss leider feststellen: Die Eingabe (über HDMI) des in D üblichen Formats 1080i50 ist leider nicht möglich ...
Offener Kanal Speyer - RheinLokal Really; that’s interesting. I guess for backwards compatibility for people with old TVs?
@@photojoseph 1080i50 is used in prof. Television in PAL - Contries ... such as Germany ... and beause we are producing mainly for Television our signal is interlaced ...
1080i50? Pretty old format… why not 1080p?
The webcaster is discontinued. What is a good alternative?
@@photojoseph Thnx! Is it still necessary with the Pro version of the Atem Mini?
Sadly there isn't one at this price point. Hopefully epiphan will get whatever is next out there ASAP!
13:22 blackmagic needs refresh rate to be same, dont know but i came across changing refresh rate inorder to detect :P
Yeah the old ATEMs do, that's true. The latest ATEM Mini does not, which is amazing
Can you stream to YouTube and Facebook simultaneously?
Not natively, but you can stream to any custom platform, so if you use a service like restream.io you can stream to that, and let that restream to multiple destinations.
Any ideas on why Epiphan just discontinued this device? I was just about to buy one and B&H shows it discontinued as does the Epiphan website.
PhotoJoseph I figured as much when I looked up the specs and saw this was released in 2017. From your last live show there was that strong hint not to buy a hardware encoder right now so I am waiting and watching. 😁
Greg and Mark — basically the product is EOL (end of life) and they manufactured what they expected to be enough to last for a while… but Coronavirus hit and they sold out everywhere. They can't make more and won't give me an estimate or commitment on what if anything will replace it. I'm CONFIDENT that something will come, and hopefully soon, but they won't say either way. Sorry :(
They says it's discontinued on Epiphan's site they direct you to this product page

Wow! Maybe they were planning to announce the next generation at NAB? I don’t know…
Hi, Joseph! Thanks for share your amazing job! I have a question and I hope you can help me: I know you did this video in 2017. I`ve just bought ATEM Mini and X2, but I'll take X2 in some days ahead, because I`m in Brazil. So, can you tell me if ATEM Mini must be connected on X2 to USB port or HDMi in? It`s because I know ATEM Mini can be recognized as a webcam in computer, but I don't know if it works like into X2. Also, if it works as webcam to X2, do you know if audio will sync perfectly to video, during the streaming? Or, ATEM Mini just must be connected to X2 to HDMi in? Please, let me know. Thanks!
All of your questions (and many more) are answered here: https://youtu.be/UuCPuqcAH94
Can the ATEM mini input the usb as a 2ed camera?
I'm not sure what you're asking but the answer is no ;-) If you mean, "can the ATEM be a second camera to the X2 via USB", no, because the ATEM is USB 3 and the X2 is only USB 2. If you mean "can the ATEM take a USB camera as one of its inputs", then no, because it only does HDMI in, not USB-in.
How would you say this stands up to the LiveU Solo with the price difference in mind?
You’re welcome Liam!
@@photojoseph I relised as I said it it was a silly question regarding the pearl mini lol.
I'm pretty sure the webcaster is enough for some live IRL, just thinking if it'll be worth having the dependentcy of the LiveU if I ever get offered a freelance job live streaming.
Love your channel.
Thanks man!!!
I have not used the LiveU Solo, so I can’t compare those. The Pearl Mini is a superb device but a whole different category. Not only is it also a switcher, it’s a much higher quality encoder. But you pay a lot for that!
Hello Mr. Joseph! It's almost 2yrs since i bought the Webcaster X2 and i have not been able to use it. Could you be used of God for me as angelic helper to put me through via a teamviewer session ? I feel sad looking at my $300 device lying idle. I will be satisfied if you can atleast teach me how to stream with it using either my Logitech C925e or C920. For example, after plugging the webcam, it keeps telling me "App does not have premission to live stream on this user" More so, i want to be able to use the webcam as my primary video source, instead of it appearing as a PIP
Reach out at photojoseph.com/1to1 for personal assistance.
Thanks
Hi,
is there any way it can be operated by battery?
Please guide me.
Thanks
Anything can be operated by a battery if it’s big enough. Just look at the input requirements and find a battery output that matches, and get the tips to match.
Hello Joseph, thanks for this video. I got myself a Webcaster X2, I also bought a USB webcam to use as a second camera.

All I am getting is a green screen. Can you help?

What camera did you use for your Second camera?
Green screen on any camera? Sounds like there may be a problem with the Webcaster. The webcam I used was a Logitech. Don’t know the model offhand but it’s super common.
Can multiple camera be connected to a switcher/mixer (Roland V-1HD) then connected to Webcaster X2 ?????
@@photojoseph Thanks...\\
Definitely
Two questions, do you lose your audio when you switch to your Usb camera? And I take it you cannot broadcast to both you tube and facebook live simultaneously?
PhotoJoseph , ain’t it the truth!
Too many questions to go into detail sorry, but any modern camera should be progressive, using a USB switcher could work but it also could freak out the receiving signal, and ultimately it sounds like you’re trying to build a complex system with super budget gear — a combo I’ve wasted plenty of time on the only ends one of two ways: tears, or spending money.
Thanks Joseph, Webcaster seems to have fallen into the technical abyss., I purchased one a while back but yet to go live. A) I’m in the Philippines...B) It only accepts a “P” hdmi input turns out I have yet to find a camera manufacturer who lists there HDMI output SignaL...so as it turns out all my cameras hdmi output is “Interlaced”, so a scaler seems to be in order. The USB providing both audio and video is a handy up grade so I guess I could go live with my webcams while I am waiting a scaler. I wonder how well the Webcaster works with say a Roland or Lumantek multiviewer? I am an ol’guy so educating myself in OBS or investing in VMix don’t enthuse me much. I will say I have an RII mini keyboard, pre-webcaster....the Decktop version might be the wireless Logitech 400 which features a track pad. I know epiphan is pushing the Pearl....but the webcaster remains the best small studio option I have found. I looked at Mevo as a solution, but found it too limited when working space is extremely small. On the USB, have you attempted using a usb switcher and multiple webcams? I guess audio can be maintained over hdmi even while using usb video. I’m full of questions as my C-920 webcam gave me fits with latency issues, which I could not find a cure for. I wonder if any of these prosumer switcher multiviewers which allow independent audio input, properly imbed it in the hdmi output, so latency is at least minimal? Sorry for all the Questions....you do a great job, thanks...
It's been a while but I'm pretty sure you can determine where audio comes from and switch only video. And correct you can't simulcast with this device.
Can you simultaneously stream to both facebook and youtube
Not from the webcaster. You can from the Pearl (much more $$ though)
Can I stream from with and HDMI cable that is plugged into an NVR- IP cameras? and if so, do I use the HDMI IN or "out" connections?
I’m not sure I understand the question… I think it’s missing a few words. But anything that outputs HDMI should be fine, and of course you connect to the input on the streaming box.
Way too long. Get to friggin point. No one is here to hear you talk and joke around. This video did not help me.
Is there a less expensive way to do a one-time event (wedding)?
Oh is that all you want to do? You said “wedding” so I assumed you wanted to connect a proper camera. Yes you can use a laptop and webcam. I believe Facebook now supports that. Also look at OBS software; it’s free. Finally consider just using a smartphone. That will be your best bet. If a webcam is good enough then you’ll love doing it with an iPhone.
I take it I can't live stream just using my Macbook internal camera or a usb camera connected to it
Thank you. For a 'one time' I'll try to borrow something...
Less expensive than the X2? It’s only $300… for live streaming hardware, that’s a bargain. So no, I don’t know of anything cheaper that’s hardware based.
Ciao Joseph, all very nice, but a little roast, at 4:32 you say "being on wireless is a little bit sketchy" and at 6:09 you say "Wired tech who really wants that". Yes, yes i get you point, but my opinion is i prefer wired tech all the time, does't matter if for headphones or a mouse/ keyboard, all this recharging eats time. I make one exception to send the sound of my Laptop to my bluetooth speaker, but they can't run out of power. Just some thoughts, thanks to you Joseph, Ciao Anton
Can I live stream a pre-recorded video from my SD card with Epiphan Webcaster X2 ? If Yes! Kindly teach me how to do it
No. The SD card reader is, as far as I know, still not activated. And once it is it’ll probably just be to record the show, not for playback.
very good !
Joseph - would love to know if the USB camera in can somehow use say a Yi4K over wireless to a dongle in the X2. Audio is not an issue in this case, only a USB camera a few (20) yards away, where a physical USB connection won't work. Any ideas?
The USB port only works with a webcam-type camera. If you feed it a higher bitrate HDMI to USB converter, it won’t work. For any specific device it’d be worth testing though. You never know!
Joseph, I’m an ol’guy, who is a firm believer in the KISS theory...I want to run the new Marantz Pro Turret USB setup through the Webcaster x2...can it be done and if so what other hardware is needed? Thanks for your help....
Have you used the Black Magic Web Presenter? and if so, how does it compare to the X2?
Don’t know if the BMD is upgradeable to 1080. The X2 hasn’t been buggy for me. Unfinished isn’t the word I’d use though. They are using an operating system that has more capabilities than they built into the hardware, but didn’t remove the UI showing it. So there’s some UI that doesn’t do anything. The hardware has capability they haven’t built software for yet, like the microSD card recording, but that’s there for future proofing. Beta features are in beta for a long time but seem to work perfectly from release. Remember how long gmail was in beta? :-) I’m pleased with the hardware. It works well and easily. I wish it had a web UI so you didn’t have to carry a monitor and keyboard for it but other than that it’s pretty sweet.
720p is a bit 5 years ago... Maybe they'll give it a firmware update to 1080. Do you find the X2 buggy? From the reviews I seen it seems like the software is almost unfinished, and it seems like they have features in beta for quite a while.
That’s why I haven’t reviewed it. 720p is a non-starter for me. 1080p is the minimum. It does look like a nice device though.
It is, which is it's one drawback... But it seems like a slick setup.
I have not, but it’s only 720p isn’t it?
Beginning at 22:00. You mention "true  multi-camera input" Will I be able integrate multiple HDMI cameras using an HDMI splitter?
I got one of these yesterday, unfortunately I didn't realise my Canon 80D has an "unclean" HDMI feed, so my live video would have all my cameras settings on display, it's a slight oversight by me. I have found a way to use one of my GoPro Hero 4 Blacks, just need a couple of extra cables to allow me to use an external mic. For the moment it does appear to be a nice little unit, I will need to get a camera specifically for live streams in the long term, I'll probably go for camcorder with an external mic input. This is a very useful video, thanks for putting it together.
DunksterBricks look at Marshall Electronics 505 cameras, I am....
Sure thing. Bummer about the Canon. Check out the LUMIX G7. For $600 you’ll get an image way better than a camcorder. https://bhpho.to/2nIoBtL http://amzn.to/2n9ukwB
STRAIGHT BULLSHIT!!!! DOES NOT WORK with CANON 6D, 60D or my 5Dmk3
+DJ KaNeck Relax, man. Contact their tech support. Sounds like a problem with your unit.
Does the Webcaster X2 support a 3g / 4g modem?
+mrcos dayboch Sort of. It doesn’t get the data directly over USB. But as soon as you plug in a USB modem, it creates a WiFi hotspot that the X2 can connect to. And don’t try to stream with 3G. 4G/LTE only.
Sounds like Epipham needs to develop an android app to connect the users phone to the device so all set up can be done on the phone so it eliminates the need for a mouse and keyboard.
+In The RedZone Yes, they do
Hi Joseph, for connecting the output to your ATEM, you could switch the output interface setting from HDMI to TV. That helped me to capture the output through my BMD Intensity Shuttle. Hope that helps.
Hi Pepper I am trying to use the BMD Intensity shuttle to bring a video feed into the webcaster X2 is this possible at all?
+VideoPepper Huh, interesting. Although it probably wouldn't matter… connecting to the ATEM requires a 1080p24 signal. So I routed it through a Decimator converter.
+PhotoJoseph Yes, in the X2 you can set the output type. It's the option above "HDMI Mode" in Settings > Display.
+VideoPepper The output in what, the X2? I'm not sure I follow…
como faço para adquirir aqui no brasil...
It's available on Amazon and other major resellers. If you can't find it though, contact the manufacturer epiphan and ask them!
Continues stream on FB is for long stream but after the event is over the clip is not save on FB
I may be reading this out of context but yes the stream saves to Facebook.
is that right ? doesn't save the stream on FB ?
Thanks for the great informative video. I need to add one more fact. The display on the X2 is very dim. It is readable indoors but unreadable outdoors so you are operating blind if you don't have a monitor and mouse. Epiphan claims the first shipment units had a darker tint than the newer ones and offered to swap mine out. I don't realize that it switched video! Thanks again.
+Bernie Howard Fryman Interesting, thanks!
Thanks for the great review / tips / test. I'm probably going to buy one, it appears FANTASTIC for £300.

Q: Do you have a Magewell or Epiphan HDMI to USB adapter to test the "two full quality" camera option? Once you are back from you well earned vacation.
+Matt Diver I do have one I can use. I'll do a proper two-camera stream from it when I'm back, yeah.
Jospeh, I am having trouble wrapping my head around this one. I am looking to get a mobile streaming setup, but I am not sure if I need this product. If I always have a laptop with me, wouldn't that replace the need for this device? I am planning on having a Blackmagic UltraStudio Mini with me so that I can input an external camera over HDMI or SDI.
+Bart Johnson Productions This device would replace both the laptop and the UltraStudio. This has HDMI in and handles the streaming. But you do still need some kind of monitor to plug into so you can see the interface. You could buy a really cheap LCD screen if you don't already have something you can use. You can't use an iOS device or access the setup screen through an app or browser, so you really have to have a monitor. That, IMHO, is this thing's most limiting function. Plus, this needs AC to work, or a battery pack and appropriate cable (not something you can buy from them so you'd have to sort out on your own). The VidiU Pro is all-in-one (but also over 3x the price). A laptop with an HDMI converter (i.e. Ultrastudio Mini) and an app like Wirecast or OBS will also do the job.

Hi,

Thanks for this – once more – great video. Do you know, if I am able to connect the webcaster to my computer, so that I can use it as a webcamp (like the ATEM Mini)? For example to use it woth a service like Zoom or Skype …

Thanks!

Hi Marc. The X2 is not a video interface. It takes a video signal and pushes it to the web. What you're looking for is an HDMI to USB Converter. That's what the ATEM Mini does (among other things).

Thanks. I thought I might be able to use the WWebcaster in shis way also (maybe with a workaround). ;)
