How to Extract Photos and Pasted Content OUT of a Keynote File

This is a little tip that I posted on twitter that got a lot of attention, so I thought I'd share it here, too.

If you use Keynote, you may have wondered how to get content (photos, graphics, PDFs, etc.) back OUT of Keynote that you've pasted or added into a presentation. For the more savvy macOS users, you probably know that for many projects, you can right-click on the project file and choose “Show package contents”, to reveal everything inside of it. But that doesn't work with Keynote projects!

Turns out, there is a way around this.

  1. Duplicate your project, because that's always a good idea.
  2. Add .zip to the end of the file name. macOS will prompt you asking if you really want to use .zip or keep .key… yes, you do want .zip
  3. Double-click or right-click > Open the newly named .zip file, and it'll extract into a folder!
  4. Open that folder, and voila, there's all your files!
