Panasonic Releases Firmware Version 2.2 for GH6
To Support Direct SSD Recording over USB

Panasonic has announced that the company will release the firmware update program Ver.2.2 for the LUMIX GH6 to enhance performance and usability. The firmware program will be available at LUMIX Global Customer Support website https://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/ at UTC 1:00 am on 27 September 2022.

GH6 Firmware Version 2.2

  • Support for direct recording to SSD over USB

The new firmware supports direct recording and playback of video/photo using an external SSD connected via USB. It is possible to record high-quality, low-compression Apple ProRes 422 HQ (Maximum 1.9Gbps) or high-bitrate, large-volume 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra directly on the USB drive (SSD) with maximum 2TB capacity. Data files recorded on the SSD can be easily transferred to PC via USB, which minimizes backup work, making post-production process more efficient.

  • High frame rate video exceeding 60.00p cannot be recorded to an external SSD.
  • It is not possible to record video and photo on the SD card or CFexpress card simultaneously while recording it on the external SSD.
  • Use an external SSD no more than 2 TB in size that is compatible with USB Type-C. We recommend using an external SSD whose operation has been confirmed by Panasonic. Note beforehand that this is not a guarantee of operation on all devices.
  • Latest information on the external SSDs will be available at the following support site at the same time as firmware release: https://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/index.html

Through the firmware updates, Panasonic proposes future-ready solutions for more flexible filmmaking workflow using mirrorless cameras.

  • Apple and ProRes are trademarks or registered trademarks of Apple Inc. in the United States and/or other countries.
  • The USB-IF Logos are trademarks of USB Implementers Forum, Inc.
  • Other trademarks and trade names are those of their respective owners.
  • All functions may not be available depending on the situation.
  • Design and specifications are subject to change without notice.

Are you excited for this update? Links to all the gear and the update are in the description below. Let me know how YOU will use this!
@@sansin6250 no. The S5IIX will have it natively.
Will S5 get a firmware update to add this feature?
Well...excited is a bit premature on my end. I accidentally (meh) went to B&H last time I visited NYC - and currently I'm more excited to eventually get the GH6...as "hardware upgrade" for my GH5 - worth it? (then I'll spend a day doing firmware upgrades) AND - will the SSD recording work with the newer Samsung T7 instead of T5?
Extremely!

HE CAMBIADO MI EQUIPO DE LA GH5II A LA GH6: ¿TE PARECE IMPORTANTE EL SUBIR DE LA PROGRAMACIÓN PERMANENTE 2,2 A LA 3 (firmware2,2 AL firmware3,0)?

SALUDOS DESDE EL SUR DE ESPAÑA.

Nice rig tho

I bought a MVME drive and an enclosure and it works great with my GH6, all the recording modes are available. The trouble of this solution is that the GH6 is power hungry and I need to use the USB-C for power delivery. CF Express type B cards are expensive; however the prices are dropping. I recently purchased a Lexar 2 TB Gold for $650 CDN.
You can also power the GH6 via a V-Mount battery and a “dummy battery” that plugs into the battery socket!
It's not often I'll watch a video like this from start to finish - I'll usually just head to the chapter - but this was such an awesomely well made an presented video. I need to absorb your stlye for mine!!
Thank you, I appreciate that!
mine doesn't allow for high frame rates after the updates. Even with DR disabled I still can't go over 60fps on all settings. Any ideas?
Must be some other mode the camera is in. Do a full camera reset if you can’t figure it out.
is there an initial 2 second lag after turning on recording when using SSD?
@@photojoseph it's about pressing the REC button. When I use a CFExpress card after pressing the button, the system starts recording only after 2 seconds. I was wondering if SSD will eliminate this lag and record immediately
Do you mean when switching from SD to SDD, or do you mean when pressing record? The first; yes. It takes time to switch. The second; not that I recall. That’s something I’d remember.
Hello, your video is very good! But I tried to do this whole process and the camera doesn't read the files on the SD card. You don't find them. What could I have done wrong? I already formatted several times and changed the cards. I can't update. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.
Make sure it’s the .bin file going on the card, at the root level. That’s the most common mistake.
Any idea on why I keep getting "File for firmware update cannot be found" after clicking on Firmware Update? Just purchased GH 6 and still showing Ver 1.2. Dowloaded 2.2 and 2.3 and my camera does not recognize files. I followed your steps. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Hi, I'm having the same problem. Did you manage to solve it? It is like? Sorry for my English, it's not my native language.
Can GH5mii record to ssd? If not, could a firmware do the trick?
No, it’s a hardware feature unfortunately
Nice video and rig :)
I wonder, is the above 60fps a USB limitation or the camera's? Like, could a new MFT camera have this limitation removed?
The limitation is on 1080p too?
Also, is it possible to record everything on the SSD but once you go VFR to record on a SD/CF card automatically without going deep into menus?
I don’t recall why (or maybe I never knew way) the limitation is there. It possibly is a processing power issue; I know that the higher the frame rate, the more CPU power is needed. I also know that writing over USB takes power. So, perhaps that’s why? It’s not bandwidth though. As to switching between USB and internal recording quickly, considering either using the custom C modes, and programming those two states into each one, or for more flexibility, programming one of your Fn buttons to quickly access that page of the menu (or even adding it to your My menu page). I don’t have the camera in hand so I can’t verify that all of those are posible but those are the options to quickly switch things in the LUMIX cameras.
i laughed so hard when seeing u polished the apple logo. You have me as a new subscriber. 🤪😜
Haha thank you!
Anyone know if this SSD set up is available for the S1H?
It is not, unfortunately. That’s a new feature that is hardware dependent. It’s in the GH6 and S5IIx only to-date.
I wanted to upgrade and I had my eye on the GH6 and then I had my eye on a few other camera brands. But then with all of these crazy updates for the GH6 it made the camera just as capable. If not better and for less money, people whine about full frame. But this is the best m43 I've seen and I love that you can mount everything under the sun to this sensor. My decision is made. I'm getting this camera tomorrow. It's videos like this that are clear and straight to the point that help videographers and photographers make the best decision possible when investing money
I love hearing that; thank you!
Will the S5Xii record to SSD?
Yes
Wonderful video, Thanks for sharing it. Fun fact: I'd like to use an external SSD. I like your blue cable. :) Can you tell me where can I buy that USB cable please? What brand is it? THANK YOU

Does the SanDisk Extreme Pro 2TB Portable NVMe SSD, USB-C, up to 2000MB/s work with GH6?
Photo Joseph I was thinking about you like a few day ago. As I had not looked at your YouTube channel in like over two years hope all is well have a blessed week
Welcome back, and thank you!
which option do I need to activate in order to record raw on my SSD?
@@photojoseph ahhh i thought that your second point at 1:57 was about recording raw on the SSD. Thx a lot for the fast reply
RAW requires an ATOMOS recorder. RAW only goes out over HDMI, not over USB.
Hello Joseph. Is there any chance to make my Mac book pro screen as a monitoring screen while shooting with gh6?
LUMIX Tether app
Dual SD card + SSD recording right from the start would have been the ideal option.
can the s5 do this
@@photojoseph ok thank you i appreciate it
No, GH6 is the only one at this time
Thanks Joseph. Succinct and to the point!
Wait...I have to reformat my entire SSD drive before starting???
I was super excited for his update, but I guess I'll have to buy another SSD for my GH6. The >60FPS limitation is a bit of a let down as well. One may as well just spend the money on CFExpress cards.
@@RunNGunPhoto my apologies. Computers need a specific format for optimum performance, like cameras. You wouldn’t format for windows and expect the best performance on a Mac, and the same goes for cameras. If the data write failed because it wasn’t formatted properly, that’d be very bad.
@@photojoseph Well for starters, I don't reformat my SSD for each machine I plug it into...
Also I understood your point without the passive aggressive last sentence.
Like any camera card it needs to be reformatted in the camera for best performance and reliability. Don’t know why this surprises you.
Great video! Could you write simultaneously in ssd and the card?
Thanks, and no.
Can u help how would the buffer be for shooting sports photography with this ? i currently have a gx8 camera

also will you get flashgun with this camera GH6 which can rapid flash as u cannot do this with gx8 at all only does single shooting with flash unfortunately
You would have significantly less buffering with this camera, assuming that you buy a fast memory card. The fastest ones this camera supports are massively faster than what the GX8 could support. As far as strobes go, look at Godox. They have lots of fantastic strobes for all cameras.
🙈 p̶r̶o̶m̶o̶s̶m̶
I have no idea what this means
Wich kind of resoluction can T5 support over GH6 ? Thank you.

Hi Joseph, what if we are using the DJI RS3 Pro, then the USB-C connector on the GH6 is now used for the SSD. Is it possible to use an USB-C HUB? :)
@@MarioMercier more about balance. Certainly if you can find a way to rig it securely, then cool. But as the OP said, then you’re giving up camera control.
@@photojoseph Why is that? I have the RS3, just received my new GH6 and have a T7 card but no CF Express B. Is it due to the weight?
No, but if you’re on a gimbal, attaching an SSD seems like a bad idea. Shoot internal!
La configurazione finale è il top 👍
❤🇧🇷🇺🇸 Oh my God, how I wanted Sony to do this with A7siii. Congratulations Panasonic
Time to upgrade 😉
thank you for this excellent demonstration, the only information that is missing to achieve the same setup is the reference of the battery holder
@@photojoseph thank you very much !! 😉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@michelbrault6355 oh THAT, sorry. That's on the GH6 SmallRig buildout video. Here's a direct link https://photojoseph.com/moment/gh6-smallrig-rigging-lumix-gh6-all-toys/20511
@@photojoseph sorry Joseph i see not the reference of smallrig mount plaque adapteur for battery in v mount in your description links …😉
Link is in the description, my friend.
You reckon samsung t7 is compatible?
No. The T7 is an inferior drive. Only use what’s been certified if you don’t want to risk losing data.
LOVE IT!!!
Me too!
So if you use the 4k 120fps option will it automatically record to sd card. And then if u switch back to 60p it will use the ssd
Unfortunately, no, you have to toggle SSD off to switch to SD recording, to record to 120p.
Always quality videos, Joseph!
Thank you, Bjørn!
I can’t turn the damn focus boxes and level gauge off on the hdmi clean feed on my BGH1. The fn1 button turns the other info off but not those
hm, that doesn't seem right. When I press Fn1, it cycles between HDMI info out, SDI info out, and info out OFF on all outputs. If you press and hold Fn1 (or any Fn button), it'll bring up the menu where you can choose what it does. The default position for Fn1 is "Info Display (HDMI/SDI)", which is what you want. You can also individually change what's on/off on each HDMI and SDI outputs in another menu.
Any idea if there will be a similar software update for earlier Gh5 cameras? I mean, what is that USB-C port used for? It can't be used to power the camera, it would be great if it could do external recording.
I'm surprised that this hasn't been a standard feature option of ALL cameras with a USB-C port released in the past 3 years. I'd love to have this option on my S1H (wishful thinking).
I don't think it's possible to come to S1H. This requires the processor that was introduced with the GH6, which should also address your first query ;-)
Thanks for making this video. 2 questions about your findings: 1) How did the GH6 format the SSD and does it just put video files into the same file structure as when recording to one of the internal cards? 2) To use the dummy battery, do you just have to leave the battery door open since it won't pass through the round cutout? Any risk of the battery accidentally just falling out mid-shoot since the door would be open?
1. Yes, same structure as SD
2. Correct. No risk of it popping out; that's a very secure holder there. You might be able to remove the door so it's not in the way, but in this rig, it's not in the way.
so useless in the real world... The only case scenario I could see this useful could be 1/ to save the time of copy if dual recording would be possible to both SSD and internal, but it's not, OR 2/ if there was an accessory (usb c hub? usb c splitter?) that could bring usb power and usb drive at the same time, for super long recording time in the highest resolution/ prores... like you're recording for 12 hours in case something happens.
Panasonic please, bring some usefull stuff : like full sensor 4:3 at 50P (no crop) for youtube+instagram video shooting, or speed improvements ( my gh6 takes over 1 second to start record... ), autofocus improvements ;-)
Just because it’s not useful to you doesn’t make it useless. It is considerably cheaper than CFexpress cards, which is the attraction to most folks. Speed of offloading or editing directly from the drive is popular. Please don’t 💩 on a feature people have been waiting for and are excited about just because it’s not right for you. As to your 1-second start time, that’s not normal. Sounds like either you’re using really slow media or there’s a problem with your camera.
Anyone else having issues with the download page only listing the older 2.0 firmware?
It’s not available until Sept 27…
Hi. The S5 it's going to have this feature?
No. Older hardware; it’s not capable.
It's a shame, that the Kondor Blue dummy doesn't have a connector in the cable, so that the battery lid of the camera can be closed.
Yeah, it’s a bummer. As you pointed out on our Discord (thanks for being a member!), it was likely designed for the GH5 II where this wasn’t an issue due to the slotted door design.
I am so glad I have not dropped too much cash on CF Express cards to date. CF Express cards are now for special vfx shots over 60fps!
Awesome! Can’t wait!! 👍
As a gh5 ninja v user, whats the advantage to recording to ssd directly over recording to the ssd in the ninja v?
@@psysword yeah they eat batteries. Consider a V-mount battery?
@@PANAFRAZER great points, thanks
12 bit RAW on ninja v plus is what I’m gonna stick with. My battery needs constant recharge….but nice option still to have.
Number 1 benefit over external recorder is size and weight. An SSD is much smaller and lighter.

Number 2 tue GH6 can power the SSD so no need to power the SSD like you’ll need in the Ninja.
Great question. The Ninja V is for capturing ProRes or ProRes RAW. It is capturing the full 10-bit 422 signal from HDMI, or even the RAW data signal, and capturing that to ProRes. Using SSD is the same as capturing to internal SD, as far as the formats go -- the only ProRes you can capture is what the camera is creating natively. The advantage of SSD over SD and CFExpress is cost and capacity, and in some cases speed of offloading. But mainly it's about cost and capacity.
Al fin, estuve esperando justo esto, consulta ya no hay los Samsung T5 fueron reemplazados por los T7 que pasa con esto?
The T7 drives are not as good as the T5. I don't recall exactly why, but that's well known in the industry that the T7 is no replacement for the T5.
1:03 The upmost importance, do not skip this step!
SUPER important!! 😂😂😇
