In lightroom I was able to right-click > edit as smart object, and Photoshop would launch and open the .cr2 as a background layer in a new document. This way if I decided not to save the document there would be no new files created.
However in aperture when I right-click > edit, it creates a tiff file and edits that, so if I decide not to save the file it’s too late as aperture has created a big tiff and added it to the library. Is there any way to just open the raw file as a smart object from aperture?

Unfortunately there is no (easy) way to do this. I imagine the quickest way would be (assuming your masters are stored as Referenced) to select the photo in Aperture, choose menu File > Show in Finder (create a keyboard shortcut for it to make this faster), then in Photoshop when you place the RAW file as a smart object, you already have the master image located in the Finder.
Sorry I don’t have a better solution (however I don’t ever use smart objects, so maybe there’s a simpler drag-and-drop method once you’ve revealed that .CR2 file?).
