Restarting Aperture/All projects automatically to Trash?? #1

Hi - new to this site but look forward to being involved in the future. I'll try to make this post as easy to understand as possible:

Yesterday, I decided that I wanted to start from scratch with a new Aperture library. I want it to be a referenced files library with the main files being on my iMac HD and the backups on my External. I had about 10000 images in my library and to get them off, I simply deleted all my projects and emptied the trash while keeping the master files on my HD.

So FF to this morning - I am testing out imports from my HD & from my D7000 card - making sure that I am doing referenced only and getting a full grasp of where they are etc. I was working with like 3 files or so just to start. Every time I try to import these referenced files - the project goes straight to the trash and when I click on the project I see no files in the viewer. I started a new project without importing anything and it shows up under the Projects bar under the “Aperture 3 Library” heading but not under the “Projects & Albums” bar where I want to my projects to be stored. Furthermore, even when I try to import to that new project that I started, the files do not show up in the viewer.

I have a feeling this may be user error, but I cant figure it out - all I did was delete my projects/files out of Aperture so I could start fresh. Any tips on this?

Ernie,

This sounds like some kind of Library corruption. You’re starting completely fresh, right? Why don’t you create a brand new Library instead of trying to use the old one. Go to menu File > Switch to Library > Other/New… and click on Create New… from there. Put the new library wherever you like and give it a unique name.

Try importing again from there and see what happens.

That did the trick - thank you so much!!!!!!!
Now here is where I was initially confused with aperture and what still confuses me. I have it set up for referenced files - so why is it creating a “library” file on my HD that essentially duplicates the referenced files and takes up space on my HD? Might be a weird question, but its something I never understood - it seems like it automatically makes it managed AND referenced if you want only referenced.

Ernie,

The .aplibrary file is where the file structure, metadata, image enhancement instructions and more are stored. You have to have a Library, otherwise what would you open? The master files can be stored inside that Library (managed) or outside of it (referenced) but you will always have the Library. And you can have as many Libraries as you want; for different clients, years, projects, or whatever you like.

That makes more sense - I guess I just needed to see it in black & white. This has been a major help - thank you so much!
