Nikon D200 no more cables #1

I am currently using a Nikon D200, while shooting at some events I have been tethered to my Mac Book Pro to display the photos as they are taken. The process is rather simple and effective, but I have two minor complaints.

I would like to eliminate the need for a cable to transfer the pictures. I would like to use a device such as the Eye-fi, however I have only been able to find it in the SD format. Does anyone no if it comes in the compact flash size?

Also, a aperture question. When I am tehered to the Mac everytime I take a photo the display on the Mac Book advances to the latest photo. You would think this is a good thing and in most cases it would be. But the issue is when people are skipping through the library it auto advances to the new picture, and the views then have to scroll back to the photo they wanted to see. The process is repeated and the viewers of the photos get very confused. Can the auto advance be disabled while in tehered mode?

the Eye-fi only comes in a SD flavour card, I do not know why… maybe just no call for a compact flash version.

the only thing that I can think of doing is buying the nikon WT-3, which i think is the right one for your camera (i am a canon person) so i am just guessing.

More expensive than the Eye-fi but will do the job. you would need to drop the images in to a folder and then use an apple script to get aperture to pull the images in (you would need to do this with an Eye-fi anyway)

I do not think I have seen away to stop aperture jumping to the latest photo when tethered.

James (& Chris),

Likewise I can’t advise on a Nikon wireless transmitter, but I’m sure they have a solution. As to why there’s no CF card version of the EyeFi, it’s a power issue. Apparently the SD slot provides power, whereas the CF slot does not (or not enough). That’s what the fine folks at Eye-Fi have told me.

Oddly, I just dug around and I found references to an SD Eye-Fi to CF adapter that was sold by photojojo.com [link] and [link] but I can’t find the product in their store. Perhaps it was discontinued, or never really worked that well.

Ooh here’s one on Amazon.com: SD / SDHC / SDXC to High-Speed Extreme CF type II Adapter Supports 16/32/48/64 GB and Higher. Not too expensive, so if you can get your hands on an Eye-Fi before buying (or keep the receipt!) it could be worth trying out.

Regardless of which wireless solution you use, you’re correct that you’ll now need to use a third-party solution to get them into Aperture; the built-in tethering feature only works for wired connections. The only one I know of (but if there’s others, I’d love to hear about it) is Aperture Hot Folder. I don’t recall if it auto-selects the newest photo or not. If it does, you may need to modify the script to get it to NOT do that (the “application” is just a big AppleScript).

I wrote an extensive article on wireless tethering with the Eye-Fi last year; be sure to read that: “Wireless Tethered Shooting Using Eye-Fi & Aperture 3, and Matching RAW to JPEG After the Shoot”

Finally if you are using Aperture’s built-in tethering feature, you can disable auto-selection of the next photo by simply disabling the check-box Auto Select in the HUD [screenshot].
