Want to change the name of some photos from the old IMG number to something
more human like “Dave on a Horse” AND show that label under the photo in the Image
Browser.

Know how to get the overlay working, which shows that info on the pop up,
but alas no visible label any other way.

Larry,

You can toggle metadata viewing on or off in the Viewer and in the Browser using the commands View > Metadata Display > Show/Hide, Viewer/Browser. They keyboard shortcuts for these are U and Y—two very good commands to remember.

You can change what metadata is visible by choosing a different set or altering the set entirely, which can all be done under View > Metadata Display > Customize.

As far as changing the name, you can do that in a batch by selecting your images and selecting Metadata > Batch Change. There you can change the Version Name, and even select to have Masters renamed as well. I have extensive discussion / suggestions on naming schemes in my book “ApertureExpert’s 15 Tips on File Management in Aperture 3” as we as “In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3” and also it’s covered at length in the first two Live Training videos.

I hope that helps,
