Moving of images IN SEQUENCE between albums #1

I am still using Aperture 2 but will soon upgrade to 3 when I buy a new laptop with 10.7.1 in a few weeks. However, before I do that I'd like to know if 3 has rectified a serious problem which exists in 2 and which no one at my Apple Store was able to solve: when moving images from a given album to another album within the same project, any custom sequencing I had done in the “sending” album were not maintained when they appeared in the “receiving” album after I had completed the move. This was disruptive to my work, maddening, and caused me to lose what little hair I have left. Again, the Apple One-toOne Aperture specialists in the local retail store could neither fix this nor explain it away. Does anyone have any insights ? Can Aperture 3 make the kind of image moves between albums, and maintain custom sequences, of the type I often do ? Thank you

Bob,

What do you mean by “custom sequences”… do you mean the order in which the photos were arranged?

Joseph, Yes.
For creative reasons I may re-arrange images in a given album into a more suitable sequence than pure chronological order, often in order to better tell a visual story. I then may have occasion to transfer all or part of those sequences to another album in the same project but such transfers never maintain that sequencing.
Then, in order to rectify the problem, I am forced to abandon the “mass transfer” of larger numbers of images and instead move smaller numbers of sequenced images from the first album to the second so I can memorize the desired sequence of that smaller number of images and then re-arrange the “jumbled sequence” images after they have been moved to the second album.
It’s a primitive work around but it’s all that’s been found to work.
I know your forum is for Aperture 3 but I’m getting a new MacBookPro soon; I’m also contemplating buying Ap 3 for it but am hesitant to do so if this sequencing problem’s not been fixed.
Thanks for your help on the matter.

Bob,

Gottcha. I just tested something and found a fix for you in Aperture 3; I’d imagine it works the same in 2 though.

The problem is that you’re moving items from an album that’s set to Manual sorting into one that is not. See, as soon as you rearrange an item in an Album, the sorting mode is set to Manual. However you can NOT choose Manual sorting until you actually manually sort something. Which means you can’t define manual sorting in a new Album. But I found a trick.

Test this out by making an album with a small collection of images and naming them 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. so it’s easy to tell at a glance if your order is being maintained.

1. Reorder your number photos however you like
2. Create a new album. Notice that the order will be set to the default “Date”. What you want is “Manual”, but you can’t select option yet [screenshot].
3. Drag any two photos into the new album.
4. Move one photo before the other. Notice that your sort order just switched to Manual.
5. Delete those two photos. You now have an empty Album with the sort order still set to Manual.
6. NOW you can drag your manually ordered photos into the new Album, and the order should maintain. I asked you to test this with a very simple and numbered series of files so you can easily tell exactly if it’s working or not.

Let me know if that works in Aperture 2! It absolutely does in Aperture 3.

It seemed eminently logical - you were setting up a “custom” or “manual” arrangement profile in the “receiving” album so that when I moved a re-arranged sequence into the receiving album it would be pre-set to accept the sequence parameters I had set up in the sending album. Brilliant………

………however, it only worked one time, the first such transfer I attempted, a move of 3 images. I never trust myself, so after the first successful attempt I tried it again with a second set of 3 manually sequenced images and it didn’t work. So I set up another receiving album and used a different set of 3 resequenced images from a different sending album and it failed again. That it worked once is a puzzle.

However, since you report it worked in Ap 3 and I’m still mired in medieval Ap 2 I will go ahead and buy Ap 3 when I get my new laptop and hope for the best.

Thank you for your guidance.

FYI the screen shot you offered in your reply post above twice led me to a “Page not found” screen. Just FYI.

Bob,

I only tried it once on my system, so I can’t promise it’ll be any different in Aperture 3. But it seems to me that this should totally work. I can try it again later if you like.

I fixed the link above, sorry.
