There are some features missing in Lightroom that we had in Aperture, but also additional features that could mean finding your images that much faster. One of the key take-aways from this course is how to properly set up a Smart Collection to search only a specific Collection Set, and not your entire Catalog.

Hey mate. Glad you're enjoying the shows. Yes the duplicate project is sadly missing; I forgot to mention that. And the Smart Collections are as you say, already there for some basics.
I talked about Target Collection in the last one, right? I think? Or am I losing my mind… ;-)

I have been following Aperture Expert for a number of years and delighted Joseph has decided to run some tutorials on moving to Lightroom.
Like a number of Aperture users this is a huge step due to the fear of the unknown.
A much better tutorial simpler and shorter.

Joseph, Thanks for the great review. I learned a few things I did not know about using Lr’s search function. There is one difference that Aperture has that Lr doesn’t. In Aperture you can create a template for your project/album set up and just copy, drag it into place and rename it for the next time you need it. For example, if your a wedding photographer and set up your projects with various albums, e.g., Groom Pictures, Bridal Party, Ceremony, Formals, etc. Or what I used to do for vacation, multi-day trips or workshops:
In Lr, you have to recreate your set up from scratch each time :-( Adobe is aware of this so hopefully in some future update they will include this capability. AND add the ability to set up smart collections in Collection Sets!
Lr has a section in Collections for Smart Albums that apply to all of the photos in the catalog. There is a number of ones already set up like 5-star, red color. You can change or keep these and/or add any others you like similar to what you could do in Aperture. The Search option that you showed us to create your own Search preset replaced many of mine that I had set up in Aperture, such as, all those pix taken with a certain lens. The Lr way of doing it is much better, IMO. Here’s am example of mine with most of the specific folders set up to capture certain keywords:
5 star, Past Month and Video Files were already set up by Adobe.
So that’s all I have for now. These are great session so far. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes down the road. I am assuming you’ll be talking about Target Collections some where down the road? I found those so very helpful and they speed up my workflow.
Cheers,
Florian
