Importing photos from hard drive #1

I have photos in a folder on my hard drive. I create a new project in Aperture, drag the files into the browser window. Then I try Show in Finder, and Aperture can't find them. If I then relocate them into the same folder, I get duplicates. What am I doing wrong?

Grace,

If you’re dragging the photos in to import them, then Aperture is importing them as “managed”, meaning that they are inside the Aperture library. The “Show in Finder” command shouldn’t even be available (should be grayed out).

Some reading to fully understand what you’re encountering…

Free tip:
Importing to Aperture as Referenced—with Drag and Drop

eBooks:
“In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3”
and
“ApertureExpert’s 15 Tips on File Management in Aperture 3”

Fully understanding referenced vs managed is critical to long term success with Aperture!

Yes! The Command-Option Drag trick works perfectly! And I do have both your eBooks, and I’m working my way through them. Thank you, thank you!

Grace,

Glad to hear it, and thanks for purchasing the books!
