Background crosshatch pattern with 7D CR2 files? #1

Is anyone else seeing a very distinct background pattern especially visible in clear skys or uniform color areas. I've been noticing this lately but don't remember seeing it in the past. I use Canon 7D RAW files. It can be made very obvious by draggin the definition or contrast sliders way up. It happens with low and high iso files. When I zoom to 100% the criss-cross pattern disappears but I can sort of see vertical banding. When I export a jpeg it seems to go away.

Geoff,

Can you capture it in a screenshot? Or does it go away when you view the screenshot?

If you can still see it, please post a screenshot, and if you don’t mind, share a RAW file that I can download and look at. If you don’t have an easy way to post, put it in the DROP BOX under the MORE menu above, and I’ll post it here for you (with your permission of course).

Hi Joseph, I’ve will put both a screenshot and the raw in the Dropbox. I can see the crosshatch in the screenshot in the blue sky on the upper left especially. This is with minimal postprocessing but if you open the RAW you can make it much worse. At least on my system.

I forgot to put my name on the screen shot but I did rename the RAW file which is currently uploading. The picture is the same.

Geoff,

I see the cross hatch in the screenshot. For anyone else who want’s to see, here it is (be sure to view at “full size”): [screenshot].

In Aperture 3.2.2, I definitely see the same thing you’re seeing. When zoomed out, there’s a clear cross-hatch. When at 100%, there’s a vertical striping. When I zoom into 400%, you can actually see the pattern in the pixels. [screenshot]

When viewing the .CR2 in Preview, zoomed out so it fits the screen (similar to Aperture’s view) I don’t see the cross hatching [screenshot].

It appears to me that there’s some screen drawing issues at play here. I’ll share this with Apple. I don’t expect to get a response, as my communiqué is largely a one-way street, so at this point you shouldn’t either, but fingers crossed for an update that affects this.

The good news is of course that this isn’t showing up on export. I tested that myself and am not seeing it even on a 100% scale JPG.

For anyone else who cares to try it out, here’s the .CR2 file.

And of course I’m Geoff is as curious as I am; is anyone else seeing this, either with 7D or any other RAW files?

Thanks for looking, glad that you can see it on your system and that its not some bad graphics card or something. It is strange that it only shows in certain files and I can’t really figure out why some files show it and others don’t. It is annoying to edit with it showing up like it does but I’m happy that it doesn’t show on exports. As you mentioned, it seems to be how the graphics card is rendering the fine low-iso noise that is inherent from the 7D/T2i/T3i/60D sensor. I really have never noticed it before the last couple months so I think something changed in one of the more recent Aperture or maybe OSX updates???
