Grain [adding and changing] #1

Hello
I found this site having searched for 'grain in Aperture'. I realise you have 'looks' packages but from what I gather the grain this adds is a layer / mask, so the grain can't really be altered, being a 'look' of grain?

I like Aperture a lot but I keep returning to LR due to the lack of grain control. Does anyone know of a way to add this function?

Check for the preset bundle ApertureExpert’s Preset Pack #1 “Looks”.

As far as I know are presets the best and quickest way to get some grain in Aperture.
There is no grain option in Aperture.

Yes, thanks. As I mentioned I’m aware of the plugin - just trying to find something a little more adaptable.

Craig,

You’re correct; my “grain” is a mask that’s applied and is not adjustable. This is the only way to achieve the look in Aperture through Adjustment Presets.

If you want full grain control, check out the plugins from Nik Software. That link will take you to Silver Efex Pro 2, but from there check the products page and look at filters like Color Efex Pro 4. I’m a huge fan of their plugins, and while not cheap, are really, really good.

Thanks Joseph,

Yes I tried the plugin, results were great, I found it really slow though. I’ve been shooting differently to achieve ‘grain’ in camera and using Aperture to bring the grain out of the image - it’s a work around but it’s ok. Maybe Apple will introduce grain next time…

Hey Craig, if you want it in camera, just pop on an ND filter and shoot at >2500iso. You’ll get all the grain you want. :) :)

Craig,

You found Nik’s plugins slow? That’s surprising… they’re very quick. Using the latest versions, and are you on a reasonable Mac?

Funny, I went back to Lightroom but am tinkering with Aperture again and found my old post when re-looking for grain!!

Yes, I’m on a MBP, 8GB / 500GB / i7 DC. Actually, it’s Aperture I find slow rather than the plugin. Compared to LR [also slow] it’s really slow! I’m doing all I can to find a way to use it though, it would certainly ‘fit in’ better.

Apologies for reviving an old thread, but I just posted a free effect (preset) for Aperture that adds film grain and though it would be relevant.
