Unwanted JPEG files located in my Documents? #1

I have been using Aperture for over 6 months and my Aperture library has been growing appropriately. Recently I noticed that my 500 GB hard drive on my MacBook Pro was filling up. The cause seems to be a very large number of JPEGs in my Document file. Any ideas how they got there or best way to remove them. My photos are currently backed up on an auxiliary hard drive. Thanks!

Erling,

Are all these JPG files photos that you originally imported into Aperture? Or are these images that you’ve exported from Aperture?

Do you know if you’re working managed or referenced?

What we have to determine is if those photos are being reference by Aperture, in which case you can’t trash them (but definitely need to clean things up).

Thanks Joseph for trying to help. I’m not sure I have all the answers to your questions. All of the JPG files are digital images as best I can tell. There are almost 6,000 of them. Maybe three times as many as images I have stored in Aperture. I have exported only a modest number of images to the desktop to send off to be printed. I have e-mailed many more directly from Aperture. The problem began I think when my wife and I were playing around with iDVD and iMovie. We exported about 450 pictures into a slide show and then added music. We had some problems merging iDVD and iMovie. By the time we had worked on multiple versions and then exported it to the desktop to burn (about 20 discs for friends) I think that’s when the problem surfaced. All my images are imported as Raw plus JPG and my editing is done on the RAW files in Aperture ( stored on the MacBook).I have signed up for the mailing list . Thanks again.

Erling,

OK let’s see if you’re managed or referenced then.

Look at a photo in your library and see if you see this icon; a box with an arrow in it [screenshot].

Look at an image you’ve made adjustments to so you see SOME icon there. If you see NONE, look for another image. You may need to toggle this metadata on and off using menu View > Metadata Display and toggle some of those on or off so you see what I’m looking for.

You can read this article to understand the rest of the badges you’re looking at: Badges. Or, “What Are All Those Funny Icons, Anyway?”.

You may also want to consider my ebook “In-Depth Getting Started with Aperture 3” as this will cover things like managed vs referenced quite well. It’s also covered in the video training on file management.

If your images are managed, then it’s safe to delete those other photos as long as you know you have them in Aperture, and aren’t using them anywhere else!

All of my files seem to be managed. I did notice that I had the box checked to copy files to documents when imported; but there are just so many more of them than in the Aperture library. Thanks again.

Erling,

Good to know they are all managed. You said you have the option to copy to documents; do you mean as a Backup Location? That would certainly explain the extras.
