A topic that surprisingly seems to have never been raised anywhere (it's purely an interface an very specific issue, that may be the reason) :
I use a lot the browser in list view, in particular as I find it's a very convenient way to review and check for consistency of the metadata I have already applied or not yet. I have set parameters to have the columns I want in the order I want, both in “expended” mode and a more “basic” mode. It is also a great way to sort images by criteria not available in the toolbar sort menu.
Here is the question : For most columns, the default column width does not display the whole data, and that can be adjusted manually, by enlarging each column, one by one. But when quitting Aperture and relaunching, the widths of the columns are lost and back to default. I have not found any way to freeze column width in order to find the exact same layout upon relaunching.
I am surprised that Aperture, whose user interface is just so efficient, elegant and outstanding in many ways, does not deal with that. Just imagine having to reset all column widths each time you re-open an Excel spreadsheet …
Any clue ? Many thanks in advance. R.
Rodolphe,
type Cmd-J and you should see the dialog for customising the Metadata Display. Choose the list view you want (basic or expanded) and add or remove items. Drag the items in the list to the right, up or down to set the order you wish to see them in List View.
NB… like so much of Aperture, there are too many silly little bugs that slip through and this reveals one of them. You may have to delete and re-add an item for it to be correctly handled in the display order.
Many thanks gfsymon. That is what I did to set the columns I want and their specific order, and that does remain after quitting and relaunching.
My issue is that I also need to adjust each column’s width to display data correctly, and to my knowledge, there is no parameter in the customising dialog for that. It can only be done by manually adjusting width in list view, and that is lost when you quit aperture… I wish i am wrong and there’s a way to freeze that permanently… R.
Ah … I understand now Rodolphe. Yup … another bug. These column widths should be remembered, but are not.
