With the recent release of Lightroom 4, I again finding myself wondering if I should convert to it from Aperture. I find the Lightroom user-interface rather awkward. I particularly don't like the lack of managed files as well as the module-based workflow. However, it does seem like Adobe is more interested in actively updating their software than Apple is with Aperture.
Is anyone else concerned that Apple has lost interest in continuing to advance Aperture? I know how secretively Apple is with software releases, but has anyone heard any reliable rumblings about a potential Aperture update on the horizon?
It does not bother me, Aperture 3 does everything I need it to do… If another version comes along then great I will no doubt show my support and buy it.
Like Chris I am very satisfied with Aperture. I am sure the next version will have features that I didn’t know I needed but there is nothing I am ‘holding my breath for’. A new version will need more horsepower hence I will then have to start thinking about hardware upgrades too.
I hear LR has some things it does better than Aperture but nothing that would cause me to contemplate the significant effort required to convert. I have used PhotoShop enough to know I wouldn’t like the LR interface as much as I like Aperture’s interface.
After 4+ yrs of using Aperture I can’t see myself converting unless Apple comes out and says they are not selling it any longer. If they come out with an upgrade in the next 2 months or next 9 months doesn’t much matter to me.

I’ve been using both Lightroom and Aperture on and off since Aperture 1 and Lightroom 2. I always go back to Aperture as it flows better for me and I like it. Lightroom has some nice development tools that I hope Aperture 4 has (lens correction, mostly), but nothing worth switching over.

I’ve been using Lr since the very first public beta, but I have only been using A 3 since it became available on the App Store … While Lr 4 is a very good app overall it does pale in comparison to Aperture 3 in several ways … Lr is not a perfect panacea … the Slideshow module in Lr is abysmal at best and to me, the Book module is a complete joke when compared to A 3 …
Though I would miss the noise reduction capability and several other nuances of the Develop module in Lr … I am leaning more and more each day to moving my entire workflow to A 3 … though I am holding off for a few months just to see if there will be a new iteration of Aperture before making a final decision …
Competing software options have a tendency to one-up each other at times and release dates often leap frog each other … often it is best to be patient and not place too much importance on one side of the scale until you can compare both options … I for one an placing some hope that Apple will up the ante soon ….
It is the longest wait for a new version from Apple for sure. Wiki tells me A3 is from Feb 9, 2010 so it’s 27 months now. If there are people procrastinating their purchase of A3 because they think A4 will be out soon I always tell them not to wait; buy now. Otherwise you’ll always be waiting for the next thing in tech, instead of using it.
I did however download a LR4 trial to take a peek, but cannot imagine myself to use Adobe software; I just installed a PCIeSSD and haven’t bothered to install CS altogether. First because I didn’t want to waste 20GB of my storage, 2ndly I think you should be fiddling with a photo after you made it; use it ‘as is’ and spent time taking photos, not changing them.

While I’m sure there is a Lr site somewhere where there are people having similar conversations, it comes down to personal preference and the comfort factor. I recently tried the trial version of Lr because I was afraid I was ‘missing out’ and it turns out (as of right now) I’m not.
If Adobe continues to develop their product to the point that their feature set is that much better, I’ll make that decision then, but for now I’m ok with waiting on Apple to take the next step ahead in the “latest and greatest” battle in the Aperture/Lightroom battle.

Yes, but only the full version of the still buggy 4.0 version … no upgrade versions, no Color Fringing controls that the 4.2 RC2 has … They maybe should have waited until the GM release of 4.2.
The big problem is if you buy the App Store version, there is no guarantee that you will be able to buy upgrade versions for future versions either …
