Aspect Ratio Automatically Changing #1

A previous post mentioned 1:1 changing to 3: 2. Same camera, but perhaps a different problem:

Camera: SONY RX100 When shooting RAW with an aspect ratio= 4:3, the file is automatic adjusted to an aspect ratio of 3:2 when imported into Aperture. I can see the “jump” as it occurs in the viewer mode. This change does not happen with jpegs. This also happens to photos taken at 16:9 RAW as they convert to 3:2. The jpgs are not effected. Have I got a setting wrong? Or is their an error in the Apple Camera Raw software for the RX100? Import presets are “none” . Help very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger

Roger,

If I’m understanding what happens in Lr correctly, the cropped info is being passed on to Lr, and it’s applying the same crop in software, but you could remove it and see the original full aspect 3:2 image, correct?

If that’s the case then it just sounds like Lr got the leg up on Aperture on this one, and is handling those RAW files better.

Once you confirm (or correct) this, I’ll pass the info along and maybe with any luck you’ll see it work in a future update.

By the way the reason you see the correctly cropped image at first in Aperture is that it initially reads the embedded JPEG from the RAW file, which will have the crop that you’d applied. But as soon as Aperture processes the RAW file, it replaces the camera-generated preview with its own. This is also while you’ll often see exposure or color changes.

FWIW - As of Photo Mechanic 5 “Soft Crops” are applied in metadata which can then be read by supporting app’s like Lightroom.
Not having access to the original file - I’m guessing this is where this is probably comes from …
Lot’s of useful fields are being added by Adobe et al - such as the “original file size” field which appeared over the last six month’s or so - IMO Aperture’s product manager needs to dedicate ongoing resources to improve and keep Aperture updated in this area.

Hmmm. How does the Sony RX100 handle those different aspect ratios? Does it apply the change in the camera after capturing a “native” 3:2? Maybe the RAWs are all 3:2 and the internally created JPGs are 16:9 or 4:3?

Hi Bob, and thanks for your comments. I really not sure and maybe all RAW are 3:2, but does that apply to RX100 raw or all RAW. I can absolutely see the “automatic” change to 3:2 from whatever else is selected and this occurs within Aperture. The selected aspect ratio shows on the camera screen and for an instant within Aperture before it changes to 3:2.

If selecting AR in Raw is always going to be changed to 3:2, I would expect the AR menu option to be greyed out when in Raw only. Is what I am experiencing typical for dslr cameras as well?

I know I can crop, but if you know what you prefer and if the option is available, why not?

I would appreciate any feedback to help me understand what is going on. I do not remember this situation with my LX5, but that is no longer available for testing.

Thanks,

Roger

Lights on! RX100 has 3:2 sensor. Case closed. Thanks.

Well, maybe case not closed. A similar inquiry to find how LightRoom handles aspect ratio in raw for the RX100 was answered as follows:

“If you select a specific ratio e.g 1 to 1 in camera then that ratio is then also applied to the raw file in Lighroom.

It is automatically cropped, selecting crop in develop shows the rest of the 3:2 image.

I find this a really useful feature as I am enjoying treating it as a square camera.”

This description matches my previous experience with the LX5 as I remember it.

My conclusion is that the Aperture Raw Conversion Software for the RX100 is operating
in a manner to bypass the user selected Aspect Ratio when shooting RAW. I believe
this is unintended.

I would very much appreciate hearing how the Aspect Ratio setting on other cameras is treated in Aperture. For the RX100 it seems that the setting is just not considered.

Thanks,

Roger

Thanks Joe & Andrew for your comments. From information I have received from OTHERS, LR works “correctly” with selected crops. Since I use only Aperture, I can’t confirm, but I believe this is missing in Aperture. Seems strange that Aperture renders the selection of Aspect Ratio meaningless when shooting RAW. My line of questioning and the several responses have taught me quite a bit about the whole subject, and for that I am thankful to those who have responded.

Is it possible that this condition is not similar for all cameras?
