I maybe missing something but I have a 320gb library & wish to reduce the size - dramatically. Reading the article of the same name I have followed the instructions, but dont seem to be able to delete the previews. I have tried time & time again but they are still there & my library refuses to reduce in size. I have unticked the required item in preferences & unticked main previews in the gear menu & then tried to delete all previews.
Is there an update to the instructions or an item I am missing?
Thanks
John
This may be a really naive answer, but I’ve forgotten to empty the Aperture trash more than once and wondered why things weren’t as expected.
Naively,

Thanks for the reminder, I hadn’t done that for a while. It brought it down by 12GB but I still can’t get stop the previews. Every little helps though…
Cheers. John

Suggest a repair to the database - Cmd-Option click on Aperture and select the middle option.

Thanks David
I’ve actually done that a few times recently. I have had a few database error messages recently as I had the external drive in a hub which went wrong & wrongly ejected it causing the database to be corrupted. I’ve repaired & rebuilt!!

Does anyone have any further suggestions on what I’m doing wrong or can do to resolve this problem. Thanks.
I had some difficulty getting previews disabled and deleted in my library. But what you’ve described matches what I did. Just in case, here’s the exact steps I used:
Turning off preview generation…
- In Aperture Preferences, click Previews and deselect ‘New projects automatically generate previews’.
- In the inspector, click the Library tab and select Projects. Click the gear icon and deselect ‘Maintain Previews for All Projects’.
To delete existing previews…
- Click Photos and clear any filters in place.
- From the menus, do Stacks -> Open All Stacks.
- Next, ⌘A to select all the photos.
- Finally, do Photos -> Delete Previews
The stacks thing is something I forget more often than I’d like to admit.

Hi Scott
Many thanks. I have followed your advice, & Ive got the size down to 289 GB. It appears to delete previews for about a minute & then stop. Ive tried a couple of times but no difference.
Many thanks. John
