Importing iPhoto libraries as Referenced libraries #1

I'm trying to import several iphoto libraries as referenced ones (so I can manage them all together).

However, the only advice I've seen so far on the internet is to use the File>Import>iPhoto Library.

The only trouble is that option does not exist under the File menu. The only sub options are “Files”, “Folders as Projects” and “Library”.

The “Library” does not allow an option to leave library where it is (referenced) and proceeds to copy it into the Aperture Library.

Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks- Mike.

Michael,

Apologies for the delay. I’ve missed a lot of posts in the last month+ and am just catching up on the ones with zero replies.

Couple of things here. First off, you’re seeing old advice that is for pre-Aperture 3.3 and iPhoto 9.3. There is no longer the option to import the iPhoto library because the libraries are the same format, so as you’ve found, you only have the import “Library” option.

Next, I think you’re confusing what referenced means in this case. Referenced means that the original photos live outside of the Library itself, however the Library still contains metadata, adjustments, etc. So it’s two parts.

When you import one library into another, you have to move at minimum the metadata/adjustments/etc. That’s the Library itself. The originals can come too, or they can be Referenced.

Thing is, and here’s what I think you’re running into, is that you can’t start with an existing MANAGED library, and import that as a REFERENCED library. You have to do it in two steps — first, make your library Referenced, and then import it into the other one.

Does that make sense?
