Managing Plug Ins #1

Hi.

I've already searched the forum and found one related post, but it hasn't seemed to solve the issue that I'm having.

When editing a photo in Aperture 3 using a plug in, older plug ins that I no longer use still appear as available options.

In the post that I found, the response was simply delete the unused plug in. In my case, I have deleted the unused plug ins, yet they are still appearing as available options.

Is there another way to manage plug ins and plug in preferences?

I'm primarily referring to plug ins including Nik Software, Perfect Photo Suite, and Alien Skin. As an example, in the case of Nik, Silver Efex Pro has been completely deleted from my computer, and replaced with Silver Efex Pro 2 (with a clean, new installation, not an upgrade), yet both still appear as options when I attempt to edit a photo using a plug in.

Do I need to re-install Aperture 3 after having deleted the plug ins I no longer use?

It's admittedly a minor issue, though it's also a little frustrating to have so many options appear as plug ins.

Any advice would be appreciated. Love the site btw. It's a wonderful resource and I frequently recommend it to other Aperture users.

Thanks very much.

Hi Mr/Mrs 1255,

Aperture looks for plug-ins in two places when it starts up. Whichever plug-ins it finds in those places it loads. Here’s the two places:

/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins
~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins

The first location is the Library at the root level of the boot hard disk. Plug-ins located here load for all users.

The 2nd location is the Library for the user that is logged in. Plug-ins located here only load for the specific user. Other users will not see them. Beginning with MacOS X 10.7 and later, Apple has hidden this Library. You can get to it by switching to the Finder and selecting the Go menu while holding the option key. The Library entry will show or hide in this menu depending on the state of the option key.

Make sure you check both locations when deleting a plug-in. Normally plug-in installers only use the system library so that the plug-in is available to all users of the computer.
