I am distraught to find that MANY images that I exported as, 8bit tifs original size, to my external hard drive were exported with a resolution of 72! I shoot in RAW and convert to tif in Aperture. Are all of these pix forever ruined?!!! How can I prevent this from ever happening again? I am using Aperture 3.2.4.
Your Raws are safe and always will be. You need to duplicate and edit the export prefix for that size and make sure the dpi is 300 if you want. AP never damages the original wheather its a raw or a tiff. Re-Export and you will be fine

My post above was based on the fact that you always keep the raw file and use them as the original. Please dont delete the raw file.

DBmoore, I appreciate your quick response. Unfortunately, I do not have the RAW files for many of these images. The whole idea in exporting projects was to free up space on my computer. I did not plan to go back and re-edit any of these pix. They were done as far as I was concerned. But, even if I did still have the RAW files…….I would have to start from scratch to re-edit my pix.
I’m guessing that all of those images that were exported at 72 are lost….as can never be printed? Hope my costly mistake helps others realize that exporting at 8bit original size is problematic. I have now made a new export preset, just hope Aperture doesn’t revert back to the old way. I am so totally frustrated by this experience : ( !

Helen,
If your export preset was set to “Original Size” in the “Size To:” popup for the preset you used, you haven’t lost a thing. For example, my T2i RAW images are 5184x3456. When I export using any preset set to Original Size, the resulting image will still be 5184x3456 (as long as I didn’t crop it) regardless of the DPI setting.
When you use an export preset set to Original Size, the DPI setting is only metadata included in the file that could be used by a printing app to determine what size to print at. But it can easily be over-ridden during the print process.
The only time the export preset setting of DPI affects the size of the output file is if your preset is using a “Size To:” setting of either “Fit Within (Inches)” or “Fit Within (Centimeters)”. Then Aperture will use the size requested along with the DPI setting to determine how many pixels wide and tall to make your exported image.
Open one of your exported images in question and find its pixel dimensions. What are they?
Thomas
Thank you Tom for the additional information. I usually print around 11x14.. Many of the images that I saved come up in inches. Ex. One of the images saved comes in at:
14.22 x 10.1 72dpi
When I change the inches to pixels the numbers are:
1024 x 727
I don’t think that would translate to a quality print…..but I’m hoping you’ll tell me it could!
Thanks for your help,
Helen

Helen,
What application are you opening the images to get the size information?
What were the pixel dimensions of your original files?
Please check the settings of the Aperture export preset you used and report back here. Here’s an example of the default TIFF 8bit Original size Preset
Thomas
Tom,
The pixel dimensions are the same in Aperture, PE 11 and preview. I have always used the default setting that you posted. However, I have just tried to recreate the problem and the pix were exporting as they should. So now I can’t figure out why this has occurred with so many of my images.
