Adorama had a special deal on 16x20 prints a while back. At $5 each I figured I could have some fun and get my favourite pictures printed. Problem is my Canon 40D is a 12 megapixel camera which gives me just under 200 dpi. I know photoshop offers different options to upres or upsample. How would I do the same in Aperture and would I have any control over how that is done?

There are two ways to do this, both involve going to the export dialog and then from the presets menu select “Edit Presets”. From there you have two options: The first is to change the size setting to be “Percent of Original” and you can specify a value larger than 100%, this will of course give you a different resolution if you’ve cropped images. The alternative is to change the setting to “Fit Within (pixels)” and set a large value. In the setting Aperture will actually upscale the image so that the longest side of the image is the size you’ve set. There’s not a way to set how Aperture does it’s up-sampling, at least not that I’m aware of. However, I’ve thought the results at 2x upscales were pretty good.

I would suggest trying to print without upscaling though. If you have the time, perhaps do a side by side, ordering the same photo printed at the same size, one just from the original and one upscaled to a higher resolution. You may find that the non-resized file prints just fine.
