Hi Guys
I am very new to Apeture Expert and even newer to posting as this is my first ever post on anything anywhere, so i hope i dont make a bags of it.
My issue is, I had been consolidating my images from my 1 Tb external hard drive and relocating the masters to a new drobo system i have bought, i have been doing this over the last couple of nights and all was going fine.
After consolidating and relocating masters from a wedding i did to the drobo, I got an error in Apeture saying Unsupported Image Format on one or two of my images I have never had this problem before and when i clicked on other images in that project they then went blank and gave the same message, I have tried to repair Rebuild and so on but im still gettin the same error, if anyone can shed any light i would appreciate it so much.
Many Thanks
Damien
I am using Imac Osx 10.6.8
Apeture 3.1.3
Digital camera raw 3.14.0
You are here
Unsupported image format
#1
The first thing to know is what the file extension is. If it’s a DNG file (converted using Adobe’s DNG converter), and it was converted to what’s known as “linear” DNG, Aperture doesn’t support it. Canon’s RAW files are notorious for this issue.
‘course…this raises the whole issue whether Adobe’s DNG format is truly universal or not.
Hi Charles
Many thanks for your reply, the file extension in the project is .cr2 all of these images were working and viewing perfectly, its weird if i click on an image which is working fine it will then go blank and say unsupported image format very weird.
Many thanks
Did you try to reprocess those images? in AP menu -> Photo -> Reprocess
Ive had that but it goes away. Also look in the FAQ for maintenace items if that doesnt work. is updating the OS and Ap and option? Cheers

Hi DB
Yeah i did that and it said there was no need to do it as it was not needed the files were fine, i will have a look in FAQs, Im not sure if upgrading Apeture or OS will make any difference.
Cheers

When strange things happen in AP I do strange things back at it. I do all the steps in repairing the database, use disk Utility to check and verify the disk the Library is on, look at the file in drobo and make sure I can open it in an editor without AP, Safe boot and then restart the machine, Use Cocktail or onyx, fsck in single user mode, Id wave a chicken bone over the computer while listening to Big Bad Voodoo Daddy if that would help. Well … never needed the chicken bone yet. Oh PRAM and SMC too. Only one of the above will work but I do them all to cover all bases. Looking at the file in another editor tell you if the original file is crusted. On those bad previews … you did delete the preview and re generate didnt you? Same with the Thumbnail. Don’t worry its always the last thing you try that will fix it. :)

Hi Guys
Well im back again and im feeling a little panicky as i dont know what i have done to my Librarys and projects not to mention this unsupported format issue, I have done all the above and nothing seems to work, if anyone can shed any light i would be very appreciative indeed.
Cheers
Damien
Did you try to open them in another photo editor and would they open and do they look ok?

Yes before you do anything else make sure you can browse directly to the original images’s in the finder and open in Preview as DBmoore say’s.
Is your Drobo a NAS - ethernet device or a directly attached eSata or Firewire external disk ?
If it’s a NAS how is it formatted - Apple has all kind of caveats about using a NAS for storage and only HFS+ formatted drives fully support Aperture ??

Hi Guys
I want to say thank you for your replies, I can go directly to finder and open the relocated master files in photo shop, my Drobo is connected by firewire and is HFS+ format.
To be honest I am a little confused as to what my problem is anymore.
It seems like i have confused Apeture with certain libraries i was trying to consolidate and relocate from one hard drive to another and I am not quiet sure which ones are corrupted for he want of a better word. but also I have this other issue of unsupported image format in certain projects but not all of the images are saying unsupported image format most of them look fine in the film strip when looking at them in the split view finder but when i click on them it changes to unsupported format.
Thanks for all the help guys .
Damien
Can you open them in “preview” though ?
Photoshop is not really that useful since for a RAW image at least, it’s using Adobe Camera RAW to do the decode, (these are RAW images - right ?).
Aperture will use the same system wide RAW decoder as Preview does so my thinking is if it’s a RAW image that will not open in Aperture or Preview, that points to data corruption on the file - scariest scenario.
If it’s fine in Preview that that might suggest Library corruption - try making a completely new project by importing some of the troublesome images from scratch and seeing if you still have the problem.
If all is fine in a new project then I think you have narrowed it down too a library issue rather than a file issue …

Hi Andrew
I have tried to look at them in preview and guess what nothing there, yes they are raw files i cannot understand what has happened here a all, i think i might have to call Apple on this one.
Cheers

If these images were viewable before you moved them to another drive, it would seem to me that you may have experienced a write error on some during the transfer to the new location … can you copy them over again from the original drive? If so, that may solve the issue …
If these same images are viewable via PS / ACR but not in Preview I would immediately lock down those images until you find out more about what’s going on.
Consider backing them up to another drive but use Chronosync or CCC or similar to do it making sure the data is verified as you do it.
Not to sound alarmist - it’s good that PS / ACR is working but either somethings off with your OSX install or worse with the Drobo so I would tread cautiously unless you have another known “good” backup.

After you have a good copy of the masters. do the three steps of rebuilding the lib again. You might want to delete the previews and thumb nails of the images not supported before you rebuild. You do have the most current software that your OS will allow, without upgrading at this time. and Apertures? Do all three steps in order… top to bottom. Then find those images in the icon view of AP and re generate thumbmnails and previews of the non supported file types. Do they need reprocessing in the raw decode part of Aperture now? How do they look?

Hi Guys
Just a further update on my unsupported file format issue, it turned out that my firewire cable was faulty, i replaced it with a usb connection and het presto all the files came back online well after i reprocessed them and updated the preview.
I want to say thank you to all who answered my call of help, i will be staying on this site and learning as much as i can.
Cheers Guys
Damien
Damien,
Thanks for the update and wow what a simple but frustrating solution. I’m going to add this one to the FAQ.

Hi guys. Had the same issue. Since yesterday. I don know how to solve this. Try to copy my wedding library to my macbook and nothing. Try to update from originals, and nothing. Try to open the same library in iPhoto and doesnt show the files that have that problem.
Any solution? Im using a 1TB USB external drive. Never had this kind of problem… don want to install lightroom… avoid me that please! thanks!
