Adding Aperture Libray #1

I have paid for an installed Aperture Inspector and I have basically no idea how to add the aperture library as per instructions. I have watched the video at this site but it is no help on this. I have gone into the Aperture application folder ,found a library folder dragged that - as that is the only Aperture Library folder that exists - but after an over an hour the icon was still spinning. I have opened I Photo and dragged one folder - with only a small number of photos to the spot but it just keeps spining after 20 mins.

I have Adobe Air current. Im running an up to date OSX Mountian Lion and im very frustrated at this process. The instructions are basically non existent for this initial task.

THere is also zero app specific support that I can email direct. Only this forum. If any can help please advise or tell me how to demand a refund from these people.

Thanks

Mark,

Joseph here. I run this site. No need to get upset; we are here to help. This *is* the support method for this product, and if you replied to any of the emails you received regarding your purchase, I would have received that directly and immediately.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having so much trouble getting it running. You are doing the right thing; just drag the library in. The “basically non existant” instructions are brief because there’s nothing else to tell… drag the library into the window in the app that says “drag your library here”, and wait. That’s it. Nothing else to tell.

However you keep referring to folders, so maybe you’re not dragging the right thing in. In the instructions it shows clearly what the icon looks like that you’re dragging in. Here’s a [screenshot] of an Aperture Library.

You didn’t say how big your Library is. As the instructions say, there is no feedback while it’s progressing (this is a limitation in Adobe Air, and is not by design) but a large library can take some time to process. My library of a couple hundred thousand images probably took 30 minutes to process, and I’m on a fairly old Mac. If you’re using a larger library or an older Mac, it could take that long to do.

If you want to continue troubleshooting it, please read this FAQ entry.

The author of the app is on the other side of the world so will I’m sure respond as soon as he’s able as well. There could be something wrong with the database in your Aperture library that’s causing the problem as well.

If you dragged in a folder from iPhoto, that’s not how it works… you have to drag the entire Library in, as per the instructions included with the product. Also it would have to be an iPhoto 9.3 or later Library for this to work.

Finally if you prefer a refund, all you have to do is ask. Just reply to any of the sales emails and ask for one, and I’ll process it by the next business day.

Regards,

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for you prompt reply and detailed response.

I did note the icon to drag from the video & download but I have no such icon anywhere. So that is really the basis for my confusion. Are you able to tell me where the icon is. I am running Aperture on a new Mac Book with all software up to date. So the icon should be on my machine. I am an experienced user and installer on software but this has me stumped.

In terms of the library there are just over 3000 images so not massive. Anyway I was dragging the wrong library folder as per instruction (library folder) which says drag library folder & the only library folder that seemed ‘draggable’ was in the application folders installed on the OS

Thanks.

Mark

Mark,

The Aperture Library is by default stored in your Pictures folder.

Thanks Joseph, I found the icon in the pictures folder and the software is up and running very well. It is a great package, I really like it.

I don’t store my Photos in the Pictures folder and had no idea there was an icon to drag from there and I had no previous reason to visit that folder and wasn’t aware it existed. Perhaps in a readme file with the software it could state where to find the icon - although I do feel I have exactly been the “sharpest tool in the shed” over this.

I have the complete NIk software set and all the pre set sets and they have alse been working very well.

Mark,

Glad you got it working. I have updated the installation guide to include the location and a screenshot of the Aperture library itself.
