Large Scale Black-and-White Photographs
Duration: 03:01 hr
Watch artist Joseph Linaschke explain the creation of his gallery hanging of large black-and-white prints on metal and discuss the many challenges he faced along the way. He backward-engineers his process in Aperture for us, showing how he reviews his images, crops and straightens them in preparation for conversion, scales them without introducing any loss in quality, and then makes the final adjustment to black and white. Finally, learn about the file output and setup that went into the final set of prints.
Topics include:
- Straightening and cropping images
- Balancing levels
- Retouching
- Converting from RAW
- Comparing scaling methods
- Converting images to black-and-white
- Performing output sharpening
- Ordering your prints

Finding any information on the Nik software is very frustrating. This course did an excellent job of how to use the various controls.
He seemed to be quite knowledgeable about all aspects of Silver Effects Pro.

Could bracket photos and combine to take advantage of dynamic range more…not using photoshop that much is a mistake…there are powerful tools in there to bring out much more. Even using Camera raw will help quite a bit especially with the sky. For me the best part was the info on using the points in silver efex pro 2.. I actually didn't know you could add a point just to block the effects of other points… so that was useful. overall good job.
congrats on the gallery showing… best.

Thank you for the feedback.
Bracketing and combining to expand dynamic range (i.e. HDR) only works on static subjects and require a tripod for perfect alignment, and many of these subjects were moving and/or were handheld.
There are many methods and tools for extracting details; I'm not a fan of Camera RAW and prefer to use Aperture. That doesn't make it right or wrong, it's just how I like to work! Ultimately however all I care about is getting the best out of my images, regardless of the tool, and I hope you'll agree that I got the most out of these images.
Happy to have shared the U Point tip — that's one of the most powerful parts of the technology, IMHO!
