I've completely baffled now. I have a library backup on an external. I now need a few images from a project that is within that library. How can I get only that project to be visible? Do I have to restore the whole library?
When I switch library after connecting external drive, Why do I see only a small number of images? The majority of my screen is grey with hints of thumbnails showing.

The way to move images between libraries is to select those images in the source library and choose File->Export xxx as Library… (where xxx depends on what is selected). This creates a new library with only the images you exported. You then open the destination library and import this new library into it. You can then delete that new library if you don’t need it anymore.
As to why you see only a small number of images, it could be because you have a filter set in the browser.
