Hello Everyone -
Last week I received my Canon 5D MkII back from Canon after having the internal computer replaced - it failed apparently $$$ ….
Ever since getting it back I'm seeing a strange window screen pattern in my images in Aperture. It's driving me nut and I'm hoping you guys might know why. Here is a screenshot of the effect. You are going to need to view it at 100% to see the pattern.
Ok here's what I've found out:
- I'm not getting the pattern when I process the raw files in Lightroom or directly in Photoshop only in Aperture.
- I'm not seeing the pattern when I view the files at 100% in Aperture.
- I'm not noticing the window screen pattern on exported images when viewed at normal resolutions. When I zoom in at 300x in photoshop new files do seem to have a underlying pattern in them on a pixel level that was not there before. Screenshot of a new raw file and a raw file from the same camera after getting it back
- I've been emailing canon support and they can't see any problem with the raw files when they look them. Their only suggestion is to pay to send it back to them and they will take a look at the camera.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm frankly not even sure if people can replicate it in Aperture other than on my computer. Can somebody try it out for me? Here's a raw file
As I said before image exported from Aperture don't seem to have the pattern at regular view resolutions but when zoomed in there seems to be a pattern. I regularly blow up images 42” wide and am worried that these might start to show some sign of pattern.
I'm getting really frustrated and appreciate your help.
Can you reproduce the same effect in iPhoto - it’s the same RAW engine so that would further narrow things down ?
I’m assuming you cant see the problem under any circumstances on in camera jpegs ?
Download canons native RAW software and see if you can see it there - if you can then Canon have to take it back.

Thanks Andrew for the suggestions. I will try iPhoto, the Jpg’s, and canon’s software. Canon wasn’t able to replciate it so I”m guessing no on that front but it’s worth a try on my end.

Ok - here’s what I’ve found out.
- Interestingly the raw files look fine in iPhoto but that same raw file imported into aperture is still giving me the grid effect.
- When opened in Canon’s raw converter files look good and clean.
- When uploading JPG files the files are clean and no grid pattern.

If you are confident you are “not” seeing the same thing in iPhoto and you are definitely seeing the RAW decode in iPhoto, (drop in to edit and “Reprocess RAW” to be sure), then I would check you RAW FIne Tuning in Aperture.
Make sure it’s on the Apple Default for your camera and not some tweaked value.
FWIW I tested the file you uploaded in Aperture and IPhoto and @ 200%, the largest zoom I could get in iPhoto they were substantially the same.
The Aperture on screen image was a little more prominent but I put that down to slightly more aggressive sharpening in the Aperture camera defaults.
A jpeg export from both programs looked identical in Preview to me.

It’s been a while since I posted and with the new site I noticed that I never posted a final update to this problem. Just incase someone else runs into this issue I want to post my solution.
After working with Canon Professional Services I discovered it was an issue when my cameras computer died they didn’t calibrate the sensor correctly and that was the cause of my problem and in some programs it lead to images degradations and pixel patterns. I sent the camera back they re-calibrated it and everything has been A-OK ever since.

Thanks for following up. Glad to know it was camera-based and not Aperture/OS X.
