Metadata Question #1

Hi

I am running a pop up studio this weekend. I will be tethering directly in to a project so I have been busy setting my import settings.

This may sound like an odd question. I have a large footfall of people having their portrait taken. I wanted my assistant, after each 2-3 shots, to speak to the sitter and embed some data eg their email, Twitter, a quote (relevant to the work we are doing).

I thought if I embedded it in a batch change of say 4-5 shots of the sitter then I have their relevant info rather than have to write it down somewhere with the risk that it gets mixed up and I mismatch.

Can I embed specifics about metadata? All the fields seem very rigid.

If an experienced photographer could suggest a way of collecting 'human specific data' to match up with portraits I'd appreciate the insight.

It's a 5 hour session and I expect to turnover 30-40 people in that time so the potential for chaos is not small :( hence why I am trying to create some order).

Thanks for any help.

The IPTC fields are free form text fields. You can put anything in them you want. You can also create custom fields for metadata that would let you label these fields what ever you want. It is perfectly fine for your assistant to enter player names, email addresses, contact info, etc. Just do it consistently and make sure it is correctly associated with the right images.

Thanks Walter, I really appreciate that.

I have now set up some custom fields in my specific metadata preset.

In the end I decided to abandon tethering. Mainly because I will be 6’ away from the Macbook and tethering doesn’t allow showing of the shot in my D7000 LCD. This I need in case of immediate adjustments I need for the speedlite power settings or the sitter.

Instead my assistant, aka my daughter will add the custom data. I plan to take four 4gb SD cards and then with each sitter she will import, using the metadata preset, import in to a separate project then add the custom metadata. (we could also keep in one project and not add duplicates as another option).

I can then just reload the next sd and off we go again.

It feels a bit clunky but I think workable.

thanks again.

You can use a single project for the event, but create separate albums for each player on the team. The album name can be the player’s name. That will let you easily find all of the images for a given player to show them.
