I import RAW-jpeg pairs into Aperture as referenced files and use the jpeg as the master. I'm running out of local disc space and want to move the “unused” RAW files onto an external HDD. This will be quite straightforward using a back-up app such as Chronosync.
But, of those many thousands of RAW files there's a hundred or so that ARE being used as masters.
Question 1: Will moving the “unused” RAW files cause a problem?
Question 2: Is there an easy way to identify the “unused” ones?
Walter,
Thanks for the reply.
As a (keen) amateur I find that jpeg is adequate for most of my photography. For some photos I try to go ‘a bit further’ which is why I have a few hundred RAW files that are being used.
And I know that one day I shall take that “one-in-a-million” photo that will make the entire world gasp in admiration (OK, dream on, John!) so I have my camera set to save both.
And I like to be future-proofed; next week something could come along and I’ll say “Why didn’t I keep all those RAW files of old?” Disc storage comes at a trivial cost these days, so why not keep them just-in-case. But I’ve been putting them on the wrong disc, hindsight is wonderful.

You can look for raw files that have no adjustments applied to them. That might find more than just your “unused” ones. I’m curious to know why you would capture, import and save raw files if you don’t intend to use them. The raw files have WAY more image information than the JPG files (more bits per color channel, far more adjustable).
