Aperture bug? Cannot view version edits though preview shows them #1

Hi all,

I'm new here, so apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere. I'm finding it difficult to view/adjust previous edits to my library. That is, NO edits previously made are showing up when I select my photos. They do however seem to be there in the thumbnail of each image. Very strange.

I'm working on Aperture 3.4.5 on Mac OS X 10.8.4.

I've put together a little screencast video to show you what I mean: Aperture Bug? Cannot view edits

Any ideas/thoughts appreciated. I have trashed my prefs though am unsure of any other troubleshooting tips that might help.

Ben,

First thing I would try is to repair permissions on the library. You can find instructions here. Be sure to check out the FAQ using the link at the top of ApertureExpert.com for answers to common problems.

Or, you can try to regenerate the preview file. Right-click the image while holding down the option key. Choose “Generate Preview” to force Aperture to delete and recreate the preview image. (If you don’t hold option, it will show “Update Preview” instead. But if Aperture thinks the preview is up to date, it won’t do anything) Aperture uses different files for the various display sizes of your images. If this doesn’t help then definitely perform the repair permissions task as described above.

Post back with your results.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for the tips. I have tried repairing permissions, and repairing the database, to no avail I’m afraid.

Regenerating the preview in fact does the opposite of what I’m searching for. As it stands, the preview (thumbnail) I am seeing reflects the changes I have made (what I’m trying to get back to), whilst the main image is only showing the master.

I assume you saw my video linked above? I tried regenerating the preview for the photo I spoke about in my video - all this did was make the thumbnail reflect the master image - so now I can’t see my edits anywhere.

Thanks for the help - I’ll look again through the FAQ but if there are any other tips I’m happy to give them a go,

Cheers,

Ben

Ben,

I did watch your video. A few more questions about your setup.

1. Where is your library stored? Is it in your Pictures folder? (the default location) or have you moved it to the Shared folder or is it on an external disk drive? If it is on an external drive, what type of drive is it and how is it formatted?

2. What adjustments are applied to the image? Your video didn’t show the adjustments tab of the inspector. It was set to Library so we couldn’t see what you had done.

You can also try running aperture from a different user account. Create a new user account if you don’t already have one. From this new account create a new library (just run Aperture and it will create a new default library). Import some photos and try editing. If there’s no problem in this new account, then I would suspect some corrupt user cache files in your normal account. You can clean out those cache files using a utility such as Onyx. There is a Cleaning section in Onyx where you can Delete cache files for the current User.

Since you see the same problem in iPhoto, I wouldn’t suspect an Aperture application problem but if you run out of ideas you could try deleting and reinstalling the Aperture application. This would be easiest if you originally bought it from the Mac App Store.

Ben,

You didn’t click the Adjustment tab in your Aperture video clip. It would be helpful to see that. Are the adjustment bricks activated or deactivated? You could see your adjustment settings are there and easily overlook whether or not the bricks are active. I’m not trying to be insulting, but sometimes these problems are even simpler than we realize.

Hi all,

Yes I realise now it would have been better to show the adjustments tab. Unfortunately, the issue is that none of the adjustments for these photos are showing up. I’ve done up a second video to show you what I mean: Aperture Bug? Part 2

To answer your questions Thomas:

1. Library is on a Lacie External Hard Drive, 160GB, formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
2. There were a number of adjustments on the edited images, curves, contrast, black and white, cropping, tilt shift etc. These don’t show up in the adjustments pane on the affected photos, though they sometimes appear very briefly when I select an image (see new video).

Thanks again for the help,

Ben

Ben,

Thanks for the followup video. That was helpful. I now understand that some images no longer have any adjustments applied. The one tilt-corrected image does show bricks of adjustments that don’t seem to be applied to the preview.

Do you have a prior version of the Library, perhaps via Time Machine, that would show the adjustments applied to these images? If so, I recommend that you make ZIP files of the “before” (accurate state) and “after” (lost state) libraries, and open a bug report with Apple. In the bug report describe the issue and tell them that you have both versions of the library that you are willing to share with them. Libraries have extensive history data embedded in them that we cannot see. Apple can provide you a FTP site and credentials so you can upload these files for them so they can dissect and analyze what may have happened.

If I were taking a completely wild guess, it almost looks like you accidentally pressed a key that reverted the images back to the master with no adjustments applied. What contradicts that is that the previews or thumbnails for some images show adjustments even though the adjustment bricks are no longer set.

Do you have auto-generate enabled for previews and thumbnails? If not, that might explain the contradiction between what the adjustment bricks indicate and what the preview and/or thumbnail displays.

Hi Walter,

Thanks for the detailed reply. To answer your question, yes I do have auto-generate previews enabled.

I think I’ll take your advice and go back through my time machine and find a version of the library with no issues (I’m not sure when this may be - might need to do some wading).

Any other ideas I’m happy to hear them but in the meantime I’ll be sending off this bug report.

Thanks a lot to all for your help.

Hi all,

A quick update, unfortunately the earliest backup I have of the library is only from 2 months ago, and has the same issues. Damn.

I just noticed a new version of Aperture in the App Store so installed this, however it hasn’t fixed the issue. I will try a clean re-install by deleting the app and re-installing, but am not holding out hope.

Thanks again for all the help - maybe Apple will like my little videos :-)
